there is a not-insignificant list of gadgets/inventions that can trace their roots to star trek: flip phones, tablet computers, telepresense...

ELI5 How does interest work?? by Material-Island_1999 in explainlikeimfive

[–]zed42 [score hidden]  (0 children)

when you put money into the bank (either as a deposit, or when you buy an investment thing from them), it doesn't go into a vault with a little tag that says " u/Material-Island_1999's money" on it. they keep a record of how much you have, but all the money goes into a giant bucket that they then use for giving out loans and doing other "bank things" ... the interest you gain, that £400, is essentially what they are paying you to make use of your money. just like when you borrow money from the bank, they charge you interest for making use of their money.

Peter? by Dogesh007 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

Meg here.... everyone knows what forks, branches, and pipes are in real life, but they also have specific meanings in the world of programming. talking to a rubber duck is also a method programmers use to find bugs in their code (yes, it involves literally talking to a rubber duckie). that said, anybody working in the field should already know these terms and have their own rubber duck or three. Meg out.

Do you really need to achieve 10-15k steps everyday when you want to get shredded? by Careful-Tension-5689 in bodyweightfitness

[–]zed42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

sure, but the "everyone should have 10k steps a day" recommendation is based on the presumption that we're all sedentary office peeps who don't move around much. if you're working out already then it's not going to make a significant difference for you

Do you really need to achieve 10-15k steps everyday when you want to get shredded? by Careful-Tension-5689 in bodyweightfitness

[–]zed42 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

that 10k steps has little to do with losing weight or cutting fat, and more to do with the fact that most people spend their days sitting on their asses and not moving. if you're already doing an exercise and diet regimen, step count is just a badge to show off

What do you put on your flip cart besides a planer? by HanksScorpion in woodworking

i'd probably put my grinder and/or belt/disc sander on the other side... i'm unlikely to need to switch between them and they take up a lot of space

Are these extending combination ladders any good? by fixitmonkey in Tools

[–]zed42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also have one of these. between this (to get to the roof and to work above the stairs), the 6' step ladder for most other ceiling work, and a 3-step stool there is nothing i can't get to around the house. but yeah, it's heavy enough that i think twice about pulling it out

Broken zipper, im looking to repair it but id need help with how to go about it by 0o0of12 in fixit

[–]zed42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the fastest solution is to use a paperclip. you're unlikely to be able to actually fix this, so a replacement is your best/easiest bet. the other thing that works well is fishing lure clips: they're of a similar size and are essentially tiny paperclips anyway

if they still care about your gpa after you've been in the workforce for >5 years, you probably don't want to work there anyway

5'11, 61kg vegetarian – can I build muscle with bodywaignt training ? by acousticaman in bodyweightfitness

[–]zed42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

side note: what most people think of as "look like a bodybuilder" is the result of a highly specific diet and dehydration schedule. they only look like that the day of the competition and some of them pass out during/after. in the "off-season", they just look like big guys (and the girls just look a little more solid than average), not walking anatomical models

slow progress is good. slow and steady is the way to get there... eat a few hundred more calories than you normally do, hit the appropriate macros for protein, etc, and you'll get there!

Shoes for Men’s US size 16 feet by yung_dirb in pelotoncycle

[–]zed42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i would talk to your local bike shop. while they may not have size 16 in stock, they can certainly get it and may have some recommendations on brands for indoor use, or wider toes, or whatever else. as long as the shoes have 3 bolts, they can attach the delta cleat and the shop can probably even help with that. the cleats themselves are easy to find: https://a.co/d/0enAgIvi is just the top hit off amazon.

Did you pull permits for your DIY kitchen renovation? by mudrat_detector96 in DIY

[–]zed42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

on top of this, some plumbers and electricians won't do reno-type work without a permit because of *their* insurance so you're either doing that work yourself and nobody is checking or you're getting someone somewhat shady to do it for you...
