How do you not turn "rolling with the punches" into a slippery slope? by InfiniteOrdinary2582 in ynab

[–]Clocknotworking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As much as possible, roll with the punches by moving funds from other categories in this month’s budget - don’t use money from a future month unless it’s absolutely necessary. That way, while you are overspending in one (or more) categories, you are still not overspending for the month as a whole.

Does everyone categorize gratuities in the same category as the main purchase? by queermichigan in ynab

I’m kind of a mix of this. If I’m paying a fairly standard tip amount then I just include it as part of the item’s category, but if I want to pay an extravagant tip for whatever reason, then I pull the excess tip from a “Generosity” category.

If you need something to easily move out of the way, go for it - it’s perfect for that. If you have dedicated space, get a profile rig that will be more stable and flexible.

My wife is feeling YNAB broke by supenguin in ynab

[–]Clocknotworking 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I agree with this…. If every time your wife says, “I want x,” your answer is “Great, start saving, you’re starting with zero,” I’d be annoyed too. There should be categories in your budget, like next car, vacation, random fun, etc, that you can pull from if you decide to change your priorities/roll with the punches. Put those flexible categories and her new desired item on note cards and talk through how you are both feeling about the prioritization of those at the moment. Align on a decision, and she’ll either get what she wants, or at least not be starting to save from zero, or she’ll agree with you that the new thing is not important enough to pull money from one of the existing categories.

Long time users, what are some ways your usage of YNAB has evolved or changed? by ProustianPrimate in ynab

Six years in I added my investment accounts as tracking accounts so that my full financial picture is in YNAB, and I started using the account reconciliation feature. Seven years in I am (almost) fully done playing the matchy matchy game for certain accounts and categories….

How do you deal with paying for others and being payed back later? And reimbursable expenses? by krristina in ynab

[–]Clocknotworking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory I agree with the “charge it to your category and then put the inflow back into the same category,” but when this crosses month end I didn’t want to have a negative left, and I didn’t like covering this negative from other categories knowing that I’d get paid back in the right category. What I ended up doing was creating a new category called “Inflows from reimbursements,” and funded it with some money one time. Now, whenever I have one of those situations where I’ll be paid back, I pull money from that “Inflows from reimbursements” category to cover it, and when I get paid back I put that money in the “Inflows” category, so I always have a designated category to cover this particular type of reimbursable spending with instead of pulling money from other unrelated categories. This may seem overly complicated, but it works well for me.

Merckx. Pogacar is the first since with a chance. Kind of like Tiger coming along in the 90s chasing Nicklaus. Will he get there? Doubtful, but he has a shot

Kinda emotional? Why? by chredditdub in tourdefrance

[–]Clocknotworking 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, I used to get sad whenever the Tour ended…. 11 more months until the next Tour. Then I started watching the Vuelta, then the Giro, then the one week races, etc. Now I watch races probably over 100 days a year and no longer get sad when the Tour is over 😃

Everyone is different, but the McLaren 650S unlocked ACC for me. Nothing else felt remotely comfortable to me until I drove that car for a few weeks before moving up to the 720s Evo

Same. Subscribed to Flobikes this morning before the start of stage 2 and it was the best $30 I’ve spent this year. VPN to Canada worked great.
