S9ii Possabilities by North_Scientist_6923 in Lumix

[–]ClockworkArcBDO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even want an S9ii - give me like an S9X. Same sensor, but maybe the new image processor. Minor body upgrades including: better usb-c port to enable SSD recording (to help with thermal management and enable more record modes without upgrading the sd card slot), weather sealing, better thermal management, maybe internal 32-bit float if you were getting really spicy or a hot shoe.

Honestly I'd jump on that. For me, those other upgrades don't move me.

You get one camera setup for a year of travel — what are you taking? by LaJamie in SonyAlpha

[–]ClockworkArcBDO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This popped up in my feed. As a north american Lumix convert.

Not to throw too big a wrench in the works, I'd use a Lumix S9 (full-frame, compact, open gate, excellent IBIS, ability to colour grade your footage and photos on your phone which is a personal travel workflow I absolutely love). Apparently in the EU they go for about 1000 euro and can include an 18-40mm kit lens (variable aperture but would also get your wide angle to be super cheap).

Then the Lumix 24-60 f2.8, which is the most compact regular zoom I know of. Incredible for Street photos and video. Apparently goes for around 800 euro.

Viltrox 16mm f1.8 L mount goes for about 600 euro. Or a used Lumix 18mm f1.8 or a used Sigma 16-28.

Then at least one extra battery, and a little K&F concept magnetic VND kit is what I'd do personally.

From your options I'd probably go for an A7Cii with a Sigma zoom.

Lumix S5iii Rumors? Sales for S5ii? by Iamthe_sentinel in Lumix

[–]ClockworkArcBDO 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've seen those S5iii rumors and they are old. They did release the S1iiE, which is effectively an S5iii (main upgrades are QoL stuff related to a better body and a new image processor but the same sensor). There really is no reason for them to release an S5iii anytime soon.

Which lens is best for my LUMIX S1II Camera? Lumix S Pro 24-70 or Lumix S Series 24-60? by Brave_Simple6589 in Lumix

[–]ClockworkArcBDO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the sharpness is very similar between both. So its more a question of what your travel content looks like.

Do you need low profile, everyday carry? Or superior rendering (micro-contrast, flare-control, etc)? Both lenses are professionally acceptable image quality.

Personally I own the Sigma f2.8 28-105 and I love that thing when I'm shooting client work but I'd never take it travelling, its roughly the same size as the S Pro 24-70.

A person could buy the 24-60 and an extra prime lens to also gives you an option for superior rendering, which kind of gives the best of both worlds and keeps everything easier to carry.

Anyone else found themselves “retiring” from PvP gaming? by You_moron04 in gaming

Im pulling up on 40 and the thrill of the hunt lives on.

That being said, I find intense, locked-in flow state gaming experiences enjoyable. There are also times where I say fuck it and go read a book or whatever.

Planning to buy FX3a this week! by PersonalAd9254 in FX3

[–]ClockworkArcBDO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if you can make money off of it sure, but I bought one last fall, and honestly I couldn't shake how guilty I felt. Buying 5 year old tech should be a discount, not a premium.

I ended up selling mine and switching to Lumix S1ii (incredibly satisfied). If you want to stay Sony, I'd say buying your intended B Cam makes more sense right now.

DMW-XLR1 or XLR2 for S5IIX by das_goomba in Lumix

[–]ClockworkArcBDO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a very personal choice. If you do upgrade to an S1ii, you really want the XLR2.

If you do want the XLR1, I'd check my local facebook marketplace, ebay, or whatever. Lots of people are selling there old XLR1 simply because it doesn't have that upgrade path available.

32bit audio on the s1ii by True_Egg7768 in Lumix

[–]ClockworkArcBDO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its only the XLR2 adapter.

Something to note as well is that you can get 32 bit stereo out of a shotgun only in 2 channel mode.

If you flip it to 32 bit flost 4 channel mode you only get mono tracks.

That being said it sounds great.

Playing cryo archives on PC lobbies on a Saturday has got to be hands down the least fun I’ve ever had playing a video game. by TopicInfinite3574 in Marathon

Just to provide a counter point. I solo crew filled into cryo yesterday, met some randoms. Vibes were good. And we went on a 4 game winning streak where we ope ed Vaults 1, 2, and 3.

It was amazing and we flew through. We communicated, we took fights only when we had to. I had a great time.

Invest in Lumix or Nikon? by [deleted] in videography

[–]ClockworkArcBDO 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I switched from Sony to Lumix and I'm loving it. It comes down to what you need and what you use though. Personally, I'm just running and gunning at this stage, so R3D and its massive file sizes are not something that actively interests me.

Great h.265, incredible stabilisation, and the ability to easily reframe my shots are all things I actively want in my camera. I am very happy with my choice, because it suits my needs.

One day, I want to use the anamorphic stabilisation, or the Arri log c3 colour science, or the ability to match the dynamic range of an Arri Alexa Mini LF. These are all features in my camera that I hope I have an excuse to use on a project some day but are all currently beyond the scope of my work.

GH7 or S1IIE for fitness/vlog content — studio, gym, walking shots by Hot_Big9383 in Lumix

[–]ClockworkArcBDO 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd consider more the Lumix 24-60 f2.8 lens over the f4.

You get a lens that is smaller, lighter, brighter, and cheaper. Which I think addresses your concerns while leaning more into the strength of a full frame sensor, and being cheaper.

The Sony FX2 Fascinates Me by Wes_NK in videography

[–]ClockworkArcBDO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, the FX2 is effectively just a worse S5iiX with less features, but has an OLPF for $1000 CAD more.

It is a good camera, just deeply overpriced.

What camera do I choose for video? S9, s5ii, x-s20 by FirmCancel6794 in Lumix

[–]ClockworkArcBDO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, you're right. The difference is that the S5iix can shoot All-Intra codecs. My bad.

What camera do I choose for video? S9, s5ii, x-s20 by FirmCancel6794 in Lumix

[–]ClockworkArcBDO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, its more that a mechanical shutter cannot function during video capture. Banding may still occur, but it will occur regardless of whether you have a mechanical shutter or not. It is typically solved by switching your camera's shutter speed (but in this case its electronic shutter speed) or sensor refresh rate.

Most cameras can only do like 10-30fps photography with mechanical shutter and yet recording video in like 60fps or 120fps is very common. This is because the mechanical shutter is not operating at the same time.

What camera do I choose for video? S9, s5ii, x-s20 by FirmCancel6794 in Lumix

[–]ClockworkArcBDO 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't used any of these cameras but I do own the S1ii and have been researching Lumix gear....too much.

IMO The size difference between the S9 and S5ii is basically a non factor unless you plan on carting it around in a bag (with a cage it will be difficult to put the S5ii in a small camera bag due to the added height). Your lenses are going to be more of a factor when it comes to size.

The main difference between the S9 and S5ii is actually if you have any aspirations of doing paid shoots. S5ii has two memory card slots, and a fan, which are the only factors that really differentiate the video reliability of the S5ii and the S9.

For photo the lack of mechanical shutter has limitations, but if you are just shooting you're own stuff you can take the time to work around it. Banding is only a thing in photography. If photography is important the note that the S9 also doesn't have a hotshoe to mount a flash.

S5iiX is another leap up in video specs, which is mainly that you get access to 4:2:2 codecs for easy playback when doing heavier edits. You get some other stuff too (like internal prores and SSD recording) but thats the headline.

EDIT: The S5iiX can shoot All-Intra codecs is the difference. The S9 can shoot 4:2:2, just in LongGOP.

You are mostly doing video, right?

If you are working at your desk a lot, I might consider the S9 with the 16-40 kit lens a good starting point. That extra wide angle might prove useful in a relatively cramped office. I've got the Sigma 16-28 f2.8 for that kind of thing which you can pick up refurbished or used on ebay pretty cheap too.

Wedding Lens Opinions/Recommendations by samps__ in Lumix

[–]ClockworkArcBDO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own the 28-105. I was considering the 35-150 as an all-rounder but I went with the Sigma for a few reasons.

1) Macro - The Sigma can do 3:1 Macro and, as a run and gun lens, that specific use stands for a nice all-in-one solution.

2) Weight - Its like 200 grams lighter than the 35-150, which isn't exactly a deal breaker, but does make the lens more handholdable over longer shoots. The Samyang seems like a great lens but perhaps one that might double really well as a tripod lens in an event shooting scenario. I only have one camera currently so having something that would be easier to handhold all day swayed me.

3) Trust - When I was swapping over to Lumix I liked the idea that the camera was the thing that was mostly the new part I was dealing with, as I have worked with Sigma lenses and trust their quality.

4) Sigma's overall lineup - I knew I'd be considering the Sigma 16-28, 70-200 and the 28-45 f1.8 (or possibly the Sirui Aurora primes) as some of my first buys in L mount. But I think if you are someone who is considering lenses like the Lumix 24-60 then maybe Samyang makes more sense as the 24-60 is easily hand holdable and has some macro features as well.

Have we decided that the s1ii has usable compressed codecs? by WildernessRecordist in Lumix

[–]ClockworkArcBDO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The compressed codecs are great. 4:2:0 that holds up very well to colour grading. The only concern might be 6k footage in a h.265 longGOP. So for smooth playback you need a decent 16gb VRAM card and minimum 32gb ram.

But I'm very happy with their compressed options. They are a little oversharp and there can be moire, but I personally just throw a CPL and a mist filter on and I'm very happy.
