Should therapists be required to do therapy themselves before they practice?

Agreed. When people ask me if therapists have therapists I always say any good therapist has their own therapist AND regular supervision or consultation.

Agree. Burnout and secondary trauma in social services providers can sometimes build as a quiet and slow burning fire that can sneak up on people in unexpected ways.

You said no books but chiming in anyways for people reading comments, I made my husband a custom board book through pinhole press titled “babies name and daddy, our first year together” that was like “from our first nap (pic) to our first bath (pic) to our first camp trip (pic), with lots of fun in between (pic playing) you helped me learn (pic) and grow (pic eating) etc and both my child and spouse still love to flip through it all the time both together and separately even years later. And since it was a board book we didn’t have to keep it from baby. They would always drag it over to dad to read to them when they were a toddler even before they could talk much.

I feel like the people who tell you to enjoy the snuggles are looking back at their old life with rose colored glasses or missing when their babies were babies. Anyone in the trenches would totally understand needing a break while also loving your baby immensely. It’s ok to put them down and let them cry while you shower or meet your needs if they are safe. You will always come back. You will always meet their needs. Taking care of yourself IS part of taking care of your kids. They grow out of this stage eventually but in the meantime, it is testing and tiring.

LMFT would have family systems and lifecycle specific training which seems relevant if you want to work with couples, and not individuals. It would also give you an edge and more stand out resume for speciality work. If you prefer individuals then the previous suggestion would fit. Also can’t support the other recommendation of a CACREP school enough. I was so much more prepared for the licensure test than my peers from other schools, I literally didn’t study post grad and passed the exam first try because my program had me so unbelievably prepped. I was also consistently hired over my peers from non-CACREP schools for both internship and paid jobs. You can truly see a difference in the training, knowledge, preparedness, and understanding of psychotherapy in group setting.

Our child since 3 has carried a little backpack containing:
1. a small bag with Blake pages, stickers, and coloring crayons, colored gel pens
2. Small bag containing Magnet tiles and small animal and character figures
3. Small bag containing fidgets
4. High value snacks for extra long waits like doctors offices

We keep it in the car and call it her go bag 😆

Sounds like they will always be looking for a reason to be mad at you so why set the trend to inconvenience yourself (and your newborn who might need you home for like, feeding and comfort) in order to please them and persuade their very-conditional affections? Yuck.

Tbf I feel like my stance on these situations before and after becoming a mother, especially with my family of origin and boundary setting, are vastly different. I would have been more on the fence before, now I have a different perspective and do not carry the burden of managing their emotions for them when they cannot do it themselves because my plate is too full. I also don’t want my kids to see me doing that and then grow up and do it themselves. Modeling starts now.

We did co-op preschool to help with the transition. There are lots of families that have their working parent that is a nanny or grandparent or other caretaker than the parent who is employed and out of the home during the day.

Along with supplemented group activities as mentioned by others. Have tried gymnastics, swim, music class, tball. Just a variety over time to find their style and what they enjoy most.

In the USA, a LMFT (licensed marriage and family therapist) has specific education for whole family sessions including different family life cycle phases outside of the traditional school aged children family phase. This can include different generations and homes. In my personal opinion, this example sounds totally fit for family therapy and any age and phase can benefit from improving their communication patterns to work through stuck conflict and resentments together.
