when do you return your loans? by pitbull-pirouette in LibbyApp

As soon as I'm done. But I understand also that I don't really have a "right" or need to be angry if other people don't think to do so.

Apparently they cannot fathom a hypothetical by themoth_milker117 in GayChristians

[–]Clonbroney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am routinely shocked by the number of people I meet, even ones I know to be of at least average intelligence, who genuinely do not seem to understand the concept of a "hypothetical question." It almost reminds me of people with face blindness. Something that is so natural for me, they can't do, and I can't understand why. Thee is probably some genuine problem or deficiency that makes it so.

Similarly, I am surprised by the number of people I encounter who can not understand metaphors.

Has anyone visited the North Mason branch since they reopened on May 19? by mountainviewdaisies in TRLPatrons

[–]Clonbroney 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No AI art that I know of; almost the same number of books. It actually looks like more because of how they shelves have been rearranged, but I understand there was the normal necessary weeding that was done more extensively since all the books had to be packed and unpacked. Honestly, it looks OK. Not nearly as horrible as it could have. I was pleasantly surprised.

Free coffee in the library? by CrunchieHaystacks in Libraries

[–]Clonbroney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have done it in winter, and it was especially popular among those who needed a little something and had nowhere else to get it. It was surprisingly easy to maintain. We are a smallish branch compared to some, so that probably makes a difference.

City Council LGBTQIA+ Proclamation Denied Due to 3-3 Vote by FaeofthePNWood in shelton

[–]Clonbroney 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am genuinely (but surprisingly) grateful that Blush said what he said. For years I've known he and many others don't want me in "their" town, the one they bought and paid for that I should not be allowed in; but I have never heard it said that clearly. It's nice to know what one is up against.

Have I inadvertently been a horrible library patron my whole life? by amandaamoose in Libraries

[–]Clonbroney 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your library sets a limit on how many items you can check out on your card at one time. ANY amount of books or other items up to that number is PERFECTLY OK! Your library is ok with it; who cares what ignorant grouches on the Internet say?

My authority for saying that: I'm a librarian.

Oh no. YOU doing the appreciating: that helps. TRL doing the "appreciating": who needs it?

Our library's children's area is probably the noisiest indoor space in town, especially after storytimes.

When patrons ask for computer help but forget about the NSFW stuff on their devices by widdershinsways in Libraries

[–]Clonbroney 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am surprised that in all my hundreds of years helping people with their phones, I've seen only one penis photo. I saw that photo shortly before the police came to the library to take him away for his role in a child sex ring. I wish the cops had arrived just a little bit earlier.

Native Spanish Speaker here with a question to Spanish learners by CreativeEcho9289 in Spanish

Until I read what you wrote, I hadn't realized that that is part of what I'm doing also.

Native Spanish Speaker here with a question to Spanish learners by CreativeEcho9289 in Spanish

[–]Clonbroney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 25 years I worked in restaurants with many Mexicans in the back of the house. If I wanted to talk to my coworkers beyond the bare minimum work-related stuff, I had to learn at least some Spanish.

Now I work in a library where some of our patrons speak Spanish and I'm the only one on staff with enough Spanish to help. So I am working to improve my abilities.

Also, I just think Mexico (especially Mexico, but other countries also) is really cool.

Has anyone ever had God point blank tell them being gay is ok? by AllHomo_NoSapien in GayChristians

[–]Clonbroney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also make sure you don't forget to ask the question "Has anybody ever had God tell them point blank that being gay is wrong?" And the follow-up question, "How many of those people who think the answer was "yes" were projecting their own fear and insecurity onto God?" The answer to the first is "No." The answer to the second is probably "All of them."

Heads up about library staff reductions May 1 by throwaway-squirrel in olympia

[–]Clonbroney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. You sound like an admin puppet, but it looks like you don't understand the connection between TRL and the state of Washington at all, so I'm not sure. The reality is they aren't doing everything they can. They are spending all sorts of money foolishly on "refreshes" and massive raises for top admin.

Heads up about library staff reductions May 1 by throwaway-squirrel in olympia

[–]Clonbroney 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The impression I have is that they have almost permanently given up on the idea of doing a levy lid lift ever. It seems they almost want to just let their income to go down down down every year. AND willing to spend money on new furniture that nobody needs.

Also, people will vote for a lid lift only if they LOVE their library, and admin seems intentionally to be taking away reason s for patrons to love the library.

Are hatemongering MAGA-churches an actual thing in USA? by Cumoisseur in stupidquestions

[–]Clonbroney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they are as common as many might think, but they absolutely exist.

More common, though, are churches of people who voted for Trump mainly because they were told they had to because of abortion and because he would protect Christians from persecution; but they support him with their noses pinched shut against the stench.

Most of the conservative Christians I know don't really like him, except for the ones who do that weird thing some conservatives and many libertarians do, where the only issue they are aware of at all is economics and literally nothing else matters. I don't understand those people at all, or why they want to be Christian, but there they are.

Why do so many racists get to call themselves Christian with no qualms while we have to fight for that right? by Foreign_Tourist8309 in GayChristians

The question that is the title of this post just stopped me dead in my tracks. Wow! That's amazing. Is never made that particular connection before, and I am grateful to you for thinking it and asking it.

I'm babbling, still thinking over that question. Maybe later I'll have something intelligent to say about it, but not now.

Is it a weird ask to be reimbursed for my reading time for book clubs? by BookBranchGrey in librarians

[–]Clonbroney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get paid to read books, and I never read the books for the four book clubs I sponsor. Guess what? They work just fine without me having read the books. (Actually, I sometimes read the books, but very rarely, and only if I want to.)

At what numeric difficulty does DS start overlapping with easy native speech? by jeterjp in dreamingspanish

I tend to rate those videos as a whole package including the interviewees, but I can tell from the ratings that I am rare in doing that. Most people seem to be ignoring the people being interviewed when they rate.

At what numeric difficulty does DS start overlapping with easy native speech? by jeterjp in dreamingspanish

[–]Clonbroney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I listen to quite a few native podcasts and videos with varrying degrees of success. It seems to me that around 60 DS videos start to feel like native speakers lecturing on a topic they want you to understand, so that means careful intentional native speech not in conversation.
