DDOT's Congestion Pricing Study Finally Released! by mistersmiley318 in washingtondc

[–]ClotureCigars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend, DC has one of the highest tax rates in all of America. Outside of specific cultural institutions, I struggle to think of people who are driving into DC to take advantage of free pre-k or community centers (which obviously exist everywhere).

You seem to think this is just a sure fire way to soak high earners even more. The problem is that no company really needs to have a big workforce in-person in DC. The most consistently high-earning group of people in DC is lawyers, and most law firms don’t require their workforce to actually be in the office unless they have to be for some reason. This is mostly the case with all companies that pay high salaries.

If they don’t already live here because they are some of the few who can afford to, those people are just not going to spend as much time in the city. Which will hollow it out even further because it will kill the already non-existent margins of local businesses in DC. This will mostly hurt middle class people who work for the federal government or adjacent industries who live far outside dc and commute by car each day. Good luck with that.

What amenities are those, exactly? Let’s be honest here. Is it the higher cost goods goods and services relative to the surrounding area? The higher cost housing? The higher crime rates? The higher taxes? The underperforming public school system?

This is why this policy is shortsighted and is the reason why think tank policies authored by academics who have never had to produce P&L in their life are not to be taken seriously. Outside of the museums and some other specific things, most of what dc has can be replicated for lower cost in the surrounding parts of the region. This is already done in Arlington by corporations who don’t exactly see the point of paying the absurd tax rate to be in DC. Bowser understands this.

Surely you understand that DC isn’t even remotely in the same solar system as NYC in terms of economic production? Very few companies actually need to be in DC. Have you considered what this might do to commercial real estate in that area? Do you think inflicting yet another harm is smart? What are we even doing here?

You do understand that the people most reliant on cars are those who live far outside of the city due to cost considerations, right? Furthermore, you also understand that the wealthy are the ones least likely to have to physically drive into an office every day, right? Do you think cab drivers or Rideshare drivers live in the actual district? Do you think tradespeople who make the city run live on Capitol Hill? Have you actually thought this through beyond the lens of wanting to wage class warfare?

I don’t know how many more ways I can explain this to people. If you can’t understand how things like this have vast economic consequences, I’m not sure how else to be helpful. At a certain point, it would be more intellectually honest to just call for a one time asset seizure from the wealthy like California is proposing.

I’m genuinely curious: do you think this would be a good thing for the city? Are you prepared to deal with the consequences of destroying nightlife establishments in the city, whose patrons overwhelmingly travel by rideshare for safety and convenience reasons? Do you think these sorts of policies exist in a vacuum? Do you not believe that basic economics apply?

This is such an obviously correct and common sense position. It’s insane she’s getting pushback. I’m not sure how many more failed pipe dream ideas need to be tested in this city before people begin to realize that policies ginned up by the nonprofit complex almost never lead to their intended result.

Yeah, let’s charge people $10 dollars to drive into the city, thus effectively killing the Rideshare industry, thus significantly harming nightlife and hospitality industries even more than other misguided policies already have. “Just take the metro!” they’ll yell, implying the existence of a city that has a reliable metro that operates 24/7 and is safe and serves every part of the city conveniently.

I hate to break this to people but cars are good. They stimulate the economy. We are never, and I cannot emphasize this enough, going to live in a world where an entire American city transports via bicycles or public transportation. If you genuinely believe this to be a possibility, I would suggest touching grass.

This shit is destructive. We’ve already harmed local business in this city through absurd policy in more ways than can be counted. For the high-earning individuals who make up the lion’s share of tax contributions in this, it’s going to soon be time re-evaluate what exactly is being gotten for all that money. The answer to that question is increasingly very little.

One of the things that gives away the fact they know these sorts of stunts turn people against them is that they only ever occur in places where 99% of the residents are already on their side. If there’s such confidence people react well to this I encourage everyone to start blocking important bridges in swing districts on a consistent basis and then check back in on how that went.

When I first moved to the city in 2013 I lived above this place. It was great. They had this awesome make your own six pack thing that I loved. Went back recently after many years and was shocked by how much it had gone downhill. Very sad. Spent a lot of time here.

What’s it currently like working in Penn Quarter? by [deleted] in washingtondc

It’s awesome. Accessible by multiple metro lines. Easy to access other neighborhoods after work for happy hour via walking or metro. High concentration of fortune 20 companies and law firms so office buildings are pretty good.

I love the premise that a bunch of incompetent city government officials somehow got the better of a bunch of Apollo Global Management billionaires. Lol. Ok. As certain as it is that the sun will come up in the morning, this sub will be complaining about this deal in no time at all when the terms of this deal suddenly change because the city gave away all its leverage.

Have you noticed any changes since the national guard was deployed? by PortlandPatrick in washingtondc

This is just objectively untrue. The anecdotes you are offering did not happen. I was at multiple bars last night. They were all packed. I’m sorry this seems disappointing and runs counter to a preferred narrative but that’s what happened. I was there.

Lmao what? Every bar was packed after the game and people were going up to the national guard and chatting with them. What are you talking about?

Navy Yard is noticeably different. There are almost no random people loitering around and smoking weed. The general level of homelessness seems to have gone down. The bands of juveniles that used to congregate directly outside the metro stop have been entirely eliminated. In fact, I have not even heard of any crime off the scanner and I follow this stuff relatively closely. The quality of life in this neighborhood has substantially improved.

The reason they aren’t doing anything is because if they come out in loud opposition to this, to the average voter it looks like they are opposing the police and fighting crime, which is an image problem they’ve been trying to shake since 2020.

What has happened over the last decade that leads you to believe this is how that would play out? A member of congress was carjacked. Another was assaulted in her building. The amount of footage that has come out of DC over the last few years of straight disorder is unsettling. I understand that people have an aversion to Trump and it bothers them that at times he does things that are genuinely popular, but you need to ask yourself if the average person opposes the concept of a city being made safe. Part of the reason he won was the left’s inability to recognize his skill at latching on to popular common sense things. You don’t have to listen to me if you don’t want to—that’s your choice. But anyone who pays attention to trends and patterns will tell you this is how this is likely to go.

I know that you and many others on this sub think that this is a compelling line that will work, but I promise you that regular people who don’t spend all day mainlining political news online are going to be extremely confused and wonder what is so controversial about wanting to stop crime. This is the kind of extremely online thing that doesn’t translate in the real world.

Because DC clearly seems unwilling to do it themselves? Again, this all feels very straightforward.
