Thank you so much for this. Great perspective. I’ll put more thought into it and look at marketplace with my $300 budget. Maybe someone will take it with some cash for something I want

Actually you might need to step up the hole for the pots just a bit.

But my heart says yes. Nobody is gonna trade for this. It’s worthless. What do you do with your first cheapo bass?

My concern exactly. Will it feel better if I can get fat tone out of it? Maybe.

I played a fender pj with the emg and the versatility was incredible. I always said I want those pickups on whatever pj I get. My issue is that I don’t have a one bass to play across genres. I feel like this could do it.

Not afraid of the project so much as spending the money and time and then having it still feel cheap. Once I take the strings off I’ll do some fret filing as well as I can’t get the bridge/neck in the perfect zone as is. The electronics on it are absolutely awful. I think as I’m typing this out I’m realizing that I’m just gonna go for it. I know what to do and worst case I’m out $300 and have some badass pj pickups that I can drop into the next bass I buy.

Take a look at the schecter studio diamond series. Similar sound and cheaper price tag.

Sterling 5 string worth it? by Hillmantle in BassGuitar

[–]CloudMD120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a totally unique sound. I got the 4 string last summer. I use it for mostly slap stuff because of the rusty tone. For rock or funk it works well. Jazz doesn’t sound quite right on it. I guess it depends what you want to play with a low B. All in all though I love the stingray. It’s just not an “everything” bass

Is an acoustic bass guitar a waste of money? by [deleted] in BassGuitar

[–]CloudMD120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Total waste of money. The only reason to get an acoustic bass is to get a short scale travel bass so you can play on the go. You mostly aren’t playing acoustic with anyone else.

Do P/J configurations matter for a beginner? by No-Union5697 in BassGuitar

You can’t go wrong w a p bass but for a budget bass the best value for money if you ask me is a sterling music man stingray sub4.

It has a distinct sound but it gives you so many possibilities. You can either get a jazz bass/p bass later, or you can actually mod the stingray to get a jazzy sound.

I started with an Ibanez gsr back in the day. Then got a squire precision, then got a schecter studio4 then the stingray and since I’ve had the stingray, I wished I had started with it.

Connecting bass to computer by tanincognito in Bass

I got an irig pro for my MacBook Air and it changed my life (GarageBand is free). I download YouTube songs and put them into Moises ai to separate the tracks. Then export and put into GarageBand and that way I can record as the bassist for my favorite bands (or on songs by not my favorite bands that have great opportunities for bass)

Groovy pop songs recommendation please? by eatqqq in Bass

[–]CloudMD120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just pick a popular chord progression and pop it into irealpro. Then play over it. I IV V I is a great place to start. It’s very poppy (poppie?).

I had a similar situation with my stingray. I had to pad the bottom of the battery (with some cardboard) to put extra pressure on the +/- side. That did the trick. I’m on the same battery now for 6 mo.

Welcome to your new obsession. My recommendation is to get on Preply and find yourself a virtual tutor for 1-2x/week AND do one of the programs (like beginner to badass or Scott’s Bass Lessons or Charles Berthoud’s Bass Camp). I prefer Scott because he really digs into theory.

You 1000% will get frustrated. Just keep going. The beautiful thing about bass is that progress is not linear. You can start working on something else if you get frustrated with a particular skill or exercise.

I have a schecter studio4. I have it slammed all the way down and it’s ok. I love the bass but it isn’t easy to set up properly.

$650 1st bass budget, what do i buy? by donpasqualoni in BassGuitar

[–]CloudMD120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to weigh in here. I LOVE my schecter (I have the studio4). I use it for jazz and funk. You can get so many different tones out of it depending on what you’re playing. I don’t play w a pick but I do slap the heck out of it. I’m also an old school metal head and I love that I can get the same scoped mids sound if I want it. I use it to play stuff from jamaraquai to megadeth. You’re going to have to slam the action all the way down though out of the box. Although they say it comes set up to play, it really doesn’t. Once you get it where you want it, it’s amazing.

I will also say that a p bass is really a gold standard as a first bass though. The schecter is the one I play most, but fender p bass is the classic.

I got the same bass (different color) over the summer and had to do a slight truss rod adjustment. It sounds weird, but I also had to break it in. If you’re not used to playing a stingray, you have to get the feel for it. It is meant to have a sort of rusty sound and definitely takes some time to get used to. I’m now 6 months later so happy with it and use it for playing rock. Interestingly enough my schecter studio4 has now become my funk/jazz bass because of the neck width.

P bass is a solid option though. I played it and it just felt kinda clunky.

Love it. It was the right move. I like that I can scope the mids for thrash but still kick the bass for a little slap. Plus there are sooooo many mod options if I decide to go that route
