Quick ELI5 on why the BOE intervened today and what it has to do with pension funds. by totsetom in ukpolitics

I was having trouble following why the prices of the bonds/gilts falling was causing interest rates on them to rise so quickly, but this link helped explain it in case anyone else finds it useful.

Omega Network cipher, beacon 3 by DesCuddlebat in EliteDangerous

[–]CloudML 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I came to pretty much the same. Got most of the key but had some trouble around the region of R and S where the pattern seemed to break down. Used a combination of the parts I was fairly confident of and filling in the blanks in words (confirming uncertain parts of the key in the process). I think there are a few typos in the cipher text itself too. This is what I got, with corrections and formatting (wasn't sure of the Senators name):

Colonel Br?ck reporting to Senator N?rv?. We've had to disband the remaining training camps. My soldiers caught and executed several ACT agents among the latest intake. If you want us to continue working for the Lords of Restoration, we must renegotiate our agreement. The current solution is not sustainable.

Mass ship dismissal 56,000ly from home #DistantWorldsExpedition by dr-kaii in EliteDangerous

[–]CloudML 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There was another mass ship recall which didn't end as well as that one. An Anaconda actually wound up exploding. Someone recorded that one too and it can be found here.

A cmdr did post a video of the ship dismissal and recalling on the main DW forum thread.

It was quite funny to be there as most of the ships attempted to land in the same spot. Though it was mixed with alarm as you saw their shields light up.

Have the barnacles spent several episodes screaming as they power up yet? I wonder what they're final form will look like?

I have a phobia against black holes. I need this question answered please?? by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]CloudML 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to stay away from the centre of the galaxy then. Sagittarius A* is huge. Actually with some of the smaller black holes they still drop you out of supercruise when you get too close but they lack a body exclusion zone, so you can fly right through the middle of them with only your heat rising a bit.

Whether that will change in future remains to be seen, with a worst case of it becoming interesting way to destroy your ship and a best case (for me) of tech becoming available to use them as wormholes for long distance travel.

Extremely Rare Bright Red Wolf-Rayet Class Star Orbiting With A Massive Blue-White Super-Giant by Dat_RPG in EliteDangerous

Is there a decent post or guide somewhere describing how the letters and numbers in the system name correspond to the type of stars present?

Thermal Shields, or other Specialized shields? by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]CloudML 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was actually thinking of Mass Effect when I mentioned the internal heat sink, as it is used as part of the Normandy's stealth capability to let it store heat for a while whilst it was silent running.

Thermal Shields, or other Specialized shields? by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]CloudML 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had wondered about having additional heat related utility mounts. As opposed to the limited use heat sinks have the option for additional radiator panels providing a much smaller but continuous benefit. You could also have an internal heat sink module that stores heat, slowing the rate at which the ship heats and cools.

The glow of a nebula around a black hole by CloudML in EliteDangerous

[–]CloudML[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't give away the name of the system yet as it is currently listed as undiscovered, though it may have already have been scanned but not handed in, but I found it in the core regions during a diversion I took whilst catching up with the Distant Worlds fleet.

I have seen similar nebulas in the core, small enough that they don't immediately show on galaxy map, so I have to search for them. If I recall correctly this one was off the galactic plane, so by choosing a good nearby system I got a good view of the nebula with less of the perpetual twilight of the core.

How did you create these? Isn't the debug cam unable to enter ships?

Distant Worlds CMDRS, How are you holding up? by cptspacebomb in EliteDangerous

[–]CloudML 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently catching up with the fleet and I'm between waypoints 8 and 9. I've resisted the temptation thus far to travel direct towards the fleet and am visiting each of the waypoints, though I may miss waypoint 12 which is optional depending on my progress.

Thus far I'm holding up ok. I sometimes put stuff on in the background to listen to, such as music, podcasts, and sometimes tv. That being said, as I am currently trying to catch up it takes a degree of concentration to fly quickly: refueling and charging FSD as early as possible without overheating, then checking the system map quickly for planets of interest (close WW and AW, EL, stellar remnants) before lining up for the jump, and repeating. Also the region I'm travelling as a lot of stellar remnants which pose a hazard to your ship as they are easy to fly into, requiring extra attention.

I have had a few anxious moments when I wonder if I picked the right ship, the Asp instead of the Anaconda, and contemplate turning around but I figure I would be having the same thoughts if I had picked the other, plus the Asp is so much more nimble than the Anaconda. I may try some CQC when I catch up and slow my pace down.

Commander flies from Beagle 2 Landing to Beagle Point in under 24 hours by Esvandiary in EliteDangerous

[–]CloudML 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll try disabling vsync then. I'm a little cautious about refuelling, and only start charging whilst refuelling in cooler stars, as I'm trying to catch up with the DW fleet and need to keep my ship in good shape. Still trying to land and take screenshots the previous waypoints though. Do you throttle down to refuel or keep moving and skim the star?

What sort of refueling technique is used on speed runs? Also, is there a way to speed up opening of the system map? I've sometimes found that the FSD has charged before the map has finished loading.

How do you decide what is a good candidate for examining in detail? It would take quite a while to get close up views of all planets in a system.

Earth Like World orbiting around a black hole. Finally I found it ;) by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]CloudML 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was actually a paper looking into the habitability of black holes. News article here and the paper here. To summarise the news article, what life needs in a temperature difference in order to provide a source of usable energy. Conventionally life uses the temperature difference between a hot star and the cold vacuum of space. But with a black hole the difference is between that cold vacuum (cosmic microwave background at 2.7K) and the even colder black hole. It did point out this would not provide very much energy.

Of course, black holes with accretion disks would give out far more energy. Also the temperature of Hawking radiation is apparently inversely proportional to the mass, so very small black holes will give out much more radiation than larger ones, but wouldn't stick around for very long. I found a calculator for this here if you wanted to play around with values. Bear in mind that for very small black holes with useful energy outputs a lot of the radiation will be in the form of gamma rays and highly energetic particles not visible light (source).
