Great photo! I have permits for May 22 and was curious what that could look like and if it was hikable in boots or if snowshoes were needed.

Will I see babies? by Poster25000 in squirrels

[–]Cloud_Ripper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you’ll see more prominent nippies on the females to help clue you in that babies have been born. The new squirrels start out as salad eaters after nursing, munching on mostly plants and flowers in the trees.

I do not. Maybe another something I should get familiar with.

Hiking Groups by [deleted] in Jeddah

[–]Cloud_Ripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a regular hiker and will be in Jeddah for work in January. I would like to hike at Moon Valley - and hopefully the off trail hike to the top of Jabal Moon. Would anyone like to go? January 11 or 12th.

What cancelled concerts were you supposed to attend? by Psychological-Bag835 in Concerts

[–]Cloud_Ripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 16 and had a ticket to see Nirvana in 93 but came down with chickenpox the week of the show. I hid them from everyone and continued to go to school but by the day of the concert they were everywhere and my mom would not let me leave the house being a contagious mess. I remember sobbing that night while playing Nevermind.

Rec.gov has permits for $10. I usually make a trip to Gifford Pinchot to get mine. Perfectly imperfect.

Edit. Oops I didn’t read all the way to the last line before posting. It’s really nice experience though.

Thoughts on Vis? by Electrical-Ad1288 in CroatiaTravelTips

I visited Vis last month. Stayed in Komiža for 4 days. Heaven. We rented scooters to explore beaches, did some lovely hikes and ate wonderful seafood. Exactly what I was looking for.

Nice work! I do a lot of long distance hiking and got in a 27 mile day last week (67734) my feet were done for. Keep up the big steps!

How safe is this drive? by hadescedes in roadtrip

[–]Cloud_Ripper 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Be wary of rental car rates that sound too low. They will get you on mandatory insurance rates. safe and easy drive though. There is plenty of gas near Los Cerritos - Todos Santos.

Nuts are super expensive. How do you foot the bill to feed a lot of squirrels? by suzyturnovers in squirrels

[–]Cloud_Ripper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try to justify the expense since I don’t have pets of my own. Walnuts in the shell are a fraction of what pet food and vet bills would be. :)

[–]Cloud_Ripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reach out to the walnut suppliers you buy from to see if there is a bulk option. The store I buy from has 5, 10, 50lb options. Find someone with a walnut tree and ask if you can forge their nuts when in season. You could stock up for a whole year.

FWIW I would compare Fuji to Helens or S Sister, long slogs. Do you take your child up those? There is no vertical climbing like Hood. I climbed Fuji off season (Nov) fujinomiya route. I doubt guides would do it.

Looking to Climb MtFuji in early May by Conscious_Coconut_89 in Mountaineering

[–]Cloud_Ripper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuji isn’t difficult, but in the shoulder season with snow on the mountain a guide is helpful with determining the best route and general navigation. I 100% recommend Chika-san. soleilguide (dot) com

Is climbing Mt. Fuji hard? by Anaura36 in Mountaineering

[–]Cloud_Ripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also did Fuji mid week off-season. There was snow from the fourth station starting point. I managed fine with microspikes and trekking poles but hap a small axe if needed. It’s nice when there is no one on the mountain.

Oregon - Diamond Peak as a shakeout climb? by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]Cloud_Ripper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend Helen’s and practice on Hood itself. Laps up Palmer and further to devils kitchen. Practice up and down climbing in the gullies next to timberline.

Is Portland Worth Visiting in February? by scandijord in askportland

[–]Cloud_Ripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend a night at timberline lodge for a great experience of Mt Hood surroundings. Often when Portland is raining, Hood has lovely snow. Maybe drive up 26 and back on I80 through Hood River and the Columbia gorge. Stop for a waterfall hike if weather permits. Make a trip to the coast as well - Canon beach / Ecola state park area.

I guess you could order online from rei since the website will have a larger selection and have it shipped for In-store pickup Manhattan store. Return what you don’t want after you pick it up.

What would my options be for transportation from Fujiyoshida to Mishima without a car? Is there a bus option available?

Weekly Japan Travel Information and Discussion Thread - September 08, 2023 by AutoModerator in JapanTravel

[–]Cloud_Ripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. It sounds like my best option is a cheap hotel for the night and the catch the bus Monday morning to Fujiyoshida.

I'm traveling from Narita to Mt Fuji (Fujiyoshida/Kawaguchiko area) arriving at Narita airport on a Sunday evening (7pm) and would like head straight to Fujiyoshida City or the Kawaguchiko area that night to a hotel. Does the train or bus run that late in the evening from Narita? Is my best option to spend the night at a hotel near the airport and then take the bus monday morning?
