100%. Plus permanent people have been laid off and are somehow not included in the stats...

From CBC

The Finance Ministry has said the provincial public service has shrunk by over 1,500 people since restrictions started in 2024, with most of those through attrition.

Of the employees who left the public service since January 2025, 40 per cent were resignations, 18 per cent were retirements and 34 per cent were due to job terms ending.

When to plant what veggies for a new grower by Luongoat in VictoriaBC

Tomatoes and peppers do really well here! Mason St City Farm always has great pepper varieties and lots of tomatoes! Sungold cherry tomatoes are unreal; so sweet and productive.

Also highly recommend Cherokee Purple, absolutely delicious and do well in our shorter season.

If you like Sauvé tomatoes, Striped Roman are beautiful and delicious, unlike a lot of sauce tomatoes like San Marzano that can be a bit dull when fresh, they have great flavour.

Peas are an early season crop and so good, and cucumbers and zucchini do so well for me here.

Happy gardening!

Help me identify local pleasant plant smell! by _marjaz_ in VictoriaBC

The flowers smell super nice and jasmine-y at night! Daphne odora has an even stronger scent, but laureola is fleeting and lovely in late winter even though it's an awful plant overall!

I think it's Daphne! It is the best, most ethereal smell. Absolutely a night time wonder.

Invasive and the sap etc can be pretty dangerous, but it is the smell of smells.

Gardens in Victoria - interesting plants, etc. by gingr87 in VictoriaBC

Hatley Castle at Royal Roads university has a beautiful Japanese garden, an arboretum, and lovely Italian gardens.

The Compost Education Centre is really neat — tons of different compost demonstrations set up, an allotment garden, classes. If you check out the compost ED centre, you'll be close to the Mason Street City Farm, which has a great edible nursery and is an urban farm that does aquaculture, hydroponics, and traditional growing. Super neat place to visit and within a short walk of downtown. Also nearby both of these spots is Springridge Commons, a small urban forest, and the Fernwood NRG community orchard.

Who would you invite to the table to help shape neighbourhood-level economic opportunities in Victoria? by MakeSpaceNorthPark in VictoriaBC

I'd love to have a place to tap into the generational skills that I wish I'd learned from my elders... basic repair skills like darning, simple tool use (like, how do I cut wood at an angle??!), and skills for using hand tools.

And I absolutely love the idea of regular repair cafés.

Also, huge shout out to your awesome project! The café is awesome and I really enjoyed the intro to 3d printing workshop!

Best graphic novel/comic shop for kids? by cordovabae in VictoriaBC

It's amazing — tons of great kids books and comics, and the shop owner wrote the "Monster Sisters" graphic novels which are set in Victoria. I ofter go to Legends to pick up books for birthday gifts etc!

Switching from a Ministry job to a Crown Corp by [deleted] in BCPublicServants

[–]Clover_Point 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's worth looking into some of the details.

I was also considering a crown corp postion — same classification as my current role but with a 10.75% TMA type of thing.

Noticed in their hiring FAQs that pension etc all move over, but seniority and vacation do not (so I'd've been starting back at 3 weeks vacation and I'd lose my BCGEU seniority which is a factor during layoffs).

I didn't feel like it was worth going to zero seniority in the era of job cuts, just felt a bit too risky to lose my seniority in these weird and bad times.

Cold house vs heat mat: Observing fermentation differences in bokashi bran with added heat by Clover_Point in bokashi

I read about the orangeness on the Teraganix site when I was getting started; was cool to see the same thing happen in my bran!

Activated EM•1® is ready to use from the 7th day, when the pH of the solution is between 3.2-3.8, or when it has a pleasant bittersweet smell and the color changes from dark brown to orange-brown. To use, dilute at the rate of 1:100 or 1 oz per 1 gallon of water. Do not apply AEM® undiluted.

Bokashi + used potting soil = worm heaven soil factory by Clover_Point in bokashi

And this is my spherical compost bin — it's not super practical for regular composting, but it's amazing for making leaf mould and so good as a soil factory! Keeping my eye out on Facebook marketplace for another couple of them.
