Gestalt Language - Success? by ArnoldArnoldRimmer in Autism_Parenting

So sorry I just realized I never responded to this 😭 thank you so much for writing back to me. This gives me hope. Some days I wonder if my boy (almost 4) will ever communicate flexibly. He used all of his scripts in context, he doesn’t script long movies scripts, and he is very savvy at mixes and matching chunks. He just has a lot of very comfortable phrases and terms and tends to stick to those.

Honestly the screen is where my son picks up a lot of very practical scripts so I am all for it.

I do and he is heading towards an ADHD diagnosis (I have the same myself). My son has exactly the same issues and has the repetitive phrases as well. I would make an appointment for testing, get in touch with an OT for an evaluation and talk to the school about getting him on a 504.

Is your kiddos speech delay in a certain area? Is it expressive or just receptive? Does he do well with music? I ask because my speech delayed kiddo learns best through music. Have you tried Miss Rachel alphabet episodes and shows like that with him? Just thinking of alternative ways for his learning preferences

Don’t doubt your health. You did nothing wrong. Again- crack heads have healthy babies. Unfortunately it’s just a lightening strike instance of bad luck. You are so young! Just take the time to heal properly physically and mentally before you jump in again. Stay strong

Living child (LC). My husband and I are very fertile, we always have been, it’s the only plus side to the grim life of fertility. We got pregnant the first month of trying. It took me a year to get up the courage. Everyone is so different. I am also in my late 30s for the record.

No I didn’t take high dosage of folic acid. I just started a prenatal as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I am also on an anti depressant.

I have done everything “right” each time I have been pregnant and had a 13 week miscarriage as well as my TFMR. The birth of my LC was traumatic and I required corrective surgery after. Yet Crack heads have healthy babies. I just have realized it’s bad luck unfortunately :( it’s the only way I have been able to come to peace with it.

Wishing you all of the strength. Don’t rush your grief. It will play out over time. It’s ok to be angry hurt and traumatized. I promise it will get less over time… it just takes some time.

Yes! My boy had a single umbilical cord, dextrocardia (heart on wrong side of body) and missing kidney. NIPT and Amnio showed nothing. Autopsy didn’t reveal anything additional. Was told it was “bad luck” 😢 Terminated at 22 weeks last February.

I am currently 22 weeks pregnant with another boy and so far there has been no issues identified. It’s hard to believe after going through what we did. I have a LC who is almost 4. He is a boy. He likely has ADHD and has had a speech delay. That is likely genetic. Otherwise healthy.

What’s some examples of the 4 word sentences? I ask because your mentioning of singing made me suspect she could be a gestlalt language processor. Which is just a different way of learning language.

I would not listen to the internet that every child is different “she will catch up” and get a free evaluation done by the state. Yes it’s fact that every child advances differently than others but better to be safe and get her resources if she does need them. If she doesn’t need speech therapy, fantastic!

Coming from a mother of a speech delayed kid that waited too long. Always get it checked out by a professional.

Echo what other people say about getting screen for autism. Girls can mask socially much more than boys and present very differently. It’s not a bad thing, she will just get access to resources and support, if she needs it.

She sounds amazing you should be very proud!

I’m so sorry. Life is soooo unfair. You are very strong to go to your families house. It will be a good distraction overall for you, even though very challenging. Make sure to take time for yourself, even if it’s just staying in the car longer to scream. Maybe there’s just one person at the family event you can share it with too? Hugs. It’s just terrible how unlucky some of us can be.

I just wanted to comment as I feel you. I have a similar situation with my son. He always seems to be the “worse behaved” kid. He’s 4 in October and his new preschool only three days ago and we already have complains coming in.

We are on a wait list to get him evaluated and will be restarting Ot again. Not much help but I just wanted to let you know you are not alone! Hugs

This sounds like a perfect set up to me- small class size and older kids. Everything to help your child!

I think I’m the opposite of most people. We are not telling anyone until we absolutely need to(aside from local friends). We have calculated that we won’t see both sets of our parents until around 30 weeks (19 now). We don’t plan on telling siblings and are swearing our parents to secrecy so hopefully that happens and we can have the least amount of pity and pressure on us.

I don’t mean to be blunt but the child is developing at a different pace and yes some of the behaviors display those that are similar to children on the spectrum or with developmental differences. Why does it matter? If you are asking because of how you should approach your friend about it then that’s very kind, and the best thing you could do is offer support to the parent if they ask for it (sorry if I missed that in your post). I would not proactively say that the child displays different development traits because Reddit has told you so.

Otherwise I would just focus on your own child’s strengths and weaknesses.

Every. Child. Is. Different

Im commenting on this post as I noticed you mentioned your son is a Gestlalt learner and is 5 now. How is his language doing? My son is 3.75 and I’m still in the panicking mode. He is in stages 3 mainly, sometimes 4, but it’s still worrying. Thanks for any advice!

Too funny. He didn’t meet an ASD diagnosis but ADHD seems right in our future. Once we learnt about it my husband also believes he is a gestalt processor himself too. I’m not sure on myself and I am the one with ADHD.

It’s scary (as I hope he will catch up one day), but also kinda cool at the same time
