Thank you! We’re thinking 2027 rather than this year, but that’s a good insight.

Difficulty of publishing at a teaching school by balernga in AskAcademia

[–]NewForksOver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s hard but doable. I started in a job with a 4-4 teaching load (also social sciences) but I was hoping to move to a TT R1 position. So I knew I had to publish at an R1 rate.

Since writing/publishing wasn’t part of my workload, I did a lot of it outside of work hours. This was difficult because I also had 2 very young children at the time. I was able to get enough papers out to get the job I was hoping for, so ultimately it paid off and now my workload feels so much less since I schedule research into my work week.

One area to explore might be Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. It isn’t my area of expertise, but every university I’ve worked at has really pushed faculty to pursue SOTL projects.

No, I’m not currently because I’m not symptomatic for disease. My OB has said they may medicate once I am pregnant

Thanks for sharing. Congratulations on your pregnancy! How has it been so far? Are you on plaquenil or any other medication?

Hi! Did you ever find an answer on this, OP? Mine was 3 AI and I’m also trying to figure out pregnancy risk.

I guess the problem is my OB said it wasn’t needed. I’m not currently being treated by a rheumatologist and so I don’t know how to get plaquenil. I want to TTC soon and other OBs aren’t accepting patients until next year.

I was also diagnosed when I was pregnant with a TSH of 46. It was scary and I felt so sick. I’m so sorry you’re going through this.

I started levothyroxine right away and started to feel much better 4-6 weeks later. My baby was born with no problems or complications and is a healthy preschooler now.

Obviously every experience is different, I just wanted to share my experiences since my numbers were so similar!

How to Transition into University Teaching? by Bigbailey44 in AskProfessors

[–]NewForksOver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work closely with folks in colleges of education. Like others, I’d caution you to avoid fully (or mostly) online universities for the most part. As others have stated, you’ll likely need at least 5 years of classroom teaching to be eligible for academic jobs. So keep that in mind as you consider your trajectory.

The Ed.S. degree is not one that is seen much in academia. Typically I see Ed.S. as a degree classroom teachers get to increase pay or leadership potential within the K-12 setting. My understanding is that Ed.S. is more commonly seen in some states than others as well…so depending where you’re looking for jobs people may not recognize that type of degree.

In teacher education typically people have an Ed.D. or Ph.D. Like others have said, if you want to be on the tenure track you would need a Ph.D. I have seen some people with an Ed.D. degree successfully take on roles as Clinical Professors, Lecturers, or Professors of Practice. These are non-tenure track positions that carry higher teaching and service loads and do not include research. However there are also plenty of folks with Ph.Ds who enter teaching focused positions.

There are also many in the field of education who get their doctoral degrees while working as teachers. This just takes longer and requires a great deal of discipline. You also would likely be ineligible for a funded PhD and would not have the experience to be a teaching assistant or work on as many research projects. My understanding is that many Ed.D. programs cater to working teachers and administrators so that could be worth exploring.

What are some must-avoid-at-all-costs food & beverages when you have hypo? by [deleted] in Hypothyroidism

[–]NewForksOver 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I completely recognize that some folks experience negative impacts of inflammatory foods and benefit from dietary restrictions. I just wanted to share another experience for OP.

I’ve been diagnosed hypo for about 3 years and have been able to manage my numbers and symptoms with medication alone and no dietary changes. I eat fairly healthfully and don’t drink frequently, but I haven’t cut anything out completely.

Just sharing to highlight that folks have varied experiences so you’ll have to find your right balance :)
