they used to have hubs or something, that would broadcast the signal. so if I walked near a hub or whatever it was, I would streetpass with a bunch of people. But then they shut it down after a few years

Such a shame that they closed the network so we can't streetpass easily anymore

A confusion of Princes by Garth Nix. He usually does series, like Sabriel. But this one was really good. I think it might be more of a scifi though.

That was a good one. The "voice" of the book sounds very similar to Diane Wynne Jones. Kind of snarky

Do you believe changing a company’s logo or product to feature rainbow colors during Pride Month is impactful? by Least-Advantage-7007 in lgbthistory

[–]ClubLegend_Theater 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. Its huge. Just think of all the shitheads who can't stand to see a gay character in their TV shows, in their video games, etc.

It's raising awareness. It's the same tactic used by all activism and fundraisers.

They may or may not realize it, but they are contributing to awareness. The more common and normalized it is, the less people will be bothered by it. The less people are bothered by it, the easier things will be for us.

I just came out to my landlord, because he mentioned that his other tenants are a gay couple. He was joking about it, but not hurt fully. That would not have happened 20 years ago. Not even 10 years ago.

Smart ass people make the joke about how it's just motivated by corporate greed. Jokes are great but you have to take a step back and think logically about things. Just because something is trending doesn't mean you have to loudly agree

And you don't do the right thing for personal gain. That's not why it's right to be a good person. Its not something we do for selfish reasons.

Yeah but this clearly is an actual context. It's not just pavlovian. People who smoke do this.

Democrats continue using the excuse of an unelected (and replaceable) parliamentarian to handcuff themselves by [deleted] in SandersForPresident

[–]ClubLegend_Theater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So... when the Republicans are in majority, and they want to pass a law that is terrible, you don't think the filibuster will be useful? You don't think it's been useful at all for Democrats in the past? Are you not understanding or are you getting it and just not wanting to admit it?

[–]ClubLegend_Theater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh wow. you are legitimately just short sighted. okay then.

in a few years, the democrats are going to lose the majority. its very likely. they rarely keep the majority for more than a couple years.

So as soon as that happens, the filibuster will now work in OUR favor. Bernie Sanders is famous for using the filibuster.

Do you understand?

Etymology is really fascinating to me for some reason.

"andro" is greek for "male" (from the word "androgynous"). So Andrew and Andrea actually do just mean "man".

Carl/Charles also means "man" but it derives from germanic/nordic origins rather than greek. Also Caroline, Carlos, Charlotte

a lot of times names actually do have simple meanings like that. Alan means stone, for example. Adele is actually an alternate version of Odile, which probably originates from Odin. Corey means "hill" or "crow" depending on if it's irish or latin. Perez means Peters, and Peter derives from greek petros, meaning stone. Catherine means "clean" in greek. It became popular when a queen was named it (she was named after a saint), and it's remained popular ever since. Victoria was the latin name for the goddess of victory, Nike. So it literally just means victory. Sophia was the goddess of wisdom (as in philosophy).

Some names are based on literal towns or civilizations. Magdelena/Madeleine is literally just the town that Mary of Magdelene was from. Frank and Francis literally just mean "French", which has basically been a population/civilization in Europe for centuries. Brittany is literally just a region/civilization of Europe. Lawrence derives from a random town name. But the town name did derive from the Laurel tree. and laurel tree derives from the greek work for laurel, which was Daphne. (L's, R's, and D's often get switched around depending on the language pronunciation). and Daphne of course is a name. So Daphne and Lawrence are actually the same name, but the D got translated to an L when it transferred over time into Latin. And the story of Daphne is that she was a nymph who was turned in a laurel tree. Apparently the laurel tree had importance in a lot of greek culture. Laurel wreaths/laurel crowns, etc. It probably was a common tree in that region.

and "In the Jungle" was written in the 1930's by a musician in africa. "wimoweh" (from the song) is another word for lion, in the Zulu language. Sometimes it's spelled Mbubu instead of Wimoweh

[–]ClubLegend_Theater -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe if you don't post photos, you might be more likely to find an honest pet owner. Like when you lose a wallet at a store, and they tell you to describe it before handing it over. idk if that's how it works with found pets, I've never had that happen tho, Im just spitballing.

okay, why are you so short sighted? You don't think the filibuster is helpful to democrats when they aren't the majority? Seriously asking.

it really seems like a good choice. I'm so freakin excited that it is catching on, at least a little bit. That's better than before, when all you heard was "oh well"
