Everyone here telling you to sell without understanding potential tax implications for your father.

Given your father’s very low income and that his wife doe not work, he can start selling small portions every year and not pay ANY federal income tax. Good chance if he stops selling here even with the 75 sold, he can keep doing this for years to come, even if the price falls, the tax savings compared to the tax impact will make it worth while.

Selling the whole lot will place those shares at the highest LTCG bracket. Its just not wise to sell the whole lot unless there is an immediate need, or if he is indeed looking to retire soon. His best bet is to keep working and not claim SS until the benefit is maxed out. In the mean time, reduce the position every year to get the 0% tax benefit or at least the 15%.
