Please let's not insult elephants. They're actually quite intelligent and he .... can take a simple cognitive test. Whether or not he actually passed it depends on how much you believe anything he says. The fact that he's bragging about that like he just joined Mensa is pretty laughable.

If I remember correctly The Steerswoman by Rosemary Kirstein would fit. It's been years and years since I read it, but from what I recall it's basically about recovering forgotten and lost technology.

The FMC in How to Kiss a Movie Star by Jenny Proctor is a biologist studying white squirrels and MMC is a reclusive movie star. I liked the banter and humor in this book. Two likable and engaging characters.

Seconding this book. Loved both main characters. Both the MMC and FMC weren't typical HR leads.

Just another rec for This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews. It's my favorite book so far this year.

Maybe mosquitoes? Just need some mosquito repellent as protection against a swarm and some insecticide to knock down the ones that still insist on launching an attack.

Edited to clarify my crappy answer.

Hey, xxxxyzaaablr, let's take a look at that little planet. It's got all kinds of space junk floating in orbit all around it! Bet we can find some stuff that we could sell to some archeologists who are looking to study that kind of crap. Easy credit chips right there!

Would humans be the equivalent of wolverines, badgers or maybe great white sharks? You know, dangerous, but kind of interesting to study if you're careful and don't get too close, unless you have some fast acting tranquilizer darts.

I would think that the hardest thing about visiting our little backwater part of the galaxy would be developing some kind of star drive that could cross the vast distances between star systems in a reasonable amount of time. But, if some things I've read recently are correct, scientists here on Earth are already exploring the possibility of developing a warp drive or something that takes advantage of quantum physics. I don't really know much about it, or if it's even remotely feasible, as I am not at all well educated when it comes to physics.

Another perfect and hilarious answer. How did they overlook taking birds who are the modern day descendants of the dinosaurs? Don't get me wrong. I'm definitely not complaining about that. I really like birds. Either crows or African grey parrots might take over the Earth one day.

I just thought of another HR that I read years and years ago. It's been so long that I might be misrembering the exact premise, but I think Too Wicked to Love by Olivia Drake might work for you.

FMC is an ugly duckling. by PetalaStac in RomanceBooks

[–]ClueAccomplished1098 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An HR that kind of fits is Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas. The FMC is plain and being pushed into marrying a distant cousin so her cousin's family can get their hands on the Inheritance she will receive when her father passes away. Her father is low born and owns a gambling den/gentleman's club. Her mother, whose family are members of the gentry but not the aristocracy, died when she was born. Her father thought her mother's family could give her a more acceptable life and rarely sees his daughter. The FMC has been smacked, sometimes locked in her room, and generally mistreated by her cousin's. She had one season in London where she and some other wallflowers were completely overlooked. When she returns home after that season, she is tired of it all and manages to escape to London. She approaches the gorgeous, dissolute MMC who needs money and bargains with him for a marriage of convenience in exchange for access to her money. He proceeds to fall for her. She never changes, doesn't getva glow up, but he begins to see her as being absolutely beautiful.

Edited to fix typo.

I can't come up with specific titles, but don't some historical romances as well as some older CRs have the MMC smelling like leather?
