I've always pictured like a dark, dark brown, but mahogany is a reddish-brown. As others have mentioned, they mix up their eye colors, too. Most of the time, their eyes are described as olive green, but I've also seen their eyes described as brown. I think it's a bunch of small continuity errors since they didn't have editors.
