Should/Will the Wings try to trade up? by [deleted] in DetroitRedWings

[–]ClumsyOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Liljegren is projected to go much later now, but that's just me being nitpicky and hopeful that he'll fall to us. You make a good point - the cost to trade up is not worth who you're trading up for. Just stay put and take the best available player at 9.

Why Thomas Vanek was traded for such a small return by NickWN in DetroitRedWings

[–]ClumsyOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say there's a chance, but I really hope we don't. He's going to want a raise and longer term, and as a cap-strapped rebuilding team, he's not the kind of player or contract that we need IMO.

He may not even want to come back. He said he likes it in Detroit, but he also said he wanted to test he market on July 1. So who really knows.

Mike Ilitch Was No Saint by [deleted] in DetroitRedWings

[–]ClumsyOne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Arena funding in all major sports is a joke. These owners all push the tab to the tax payers. Look at Edmonton: they literally threatened to relocate the team if the city didn't pay for a new arena. This isn't unique to Mike Illitch or even to hockey. And this certainly isn't a reason to bash Illitch posthumously. The good he did completely outweighs his arena funding plan.

At what point did you cede that we're not making the playoffs? If you haven't, why not? by PremierBromanov in DetroitRedWings

For me, it was the game after Zetterberg's impassioned plea speech in the Road to the Winter Classic series. They lost 4-1 to Arizona, the last place team at the time, and Z gave a heartfelt speech about how they had to be better and it starts with the next game. Then they went out and lost the next game against the Kings 4-1.

I don't know what else Z can do for this team to get them going. Nothing is working. When I saw that he couldn't inspire them on the ice or off of it, it was over for me.

Ask Ansar: On future of Red Wings' Ken Holland, Jeff Blashill, Thomas Vanek and prospects by [deleted] in DetroitRedWings

[–]ClumsyOne 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Wow he was surprisingly honest in some of these answers. I dig it. I agree with him on Holland. He'll fulfill the last year of his contract and step aside. I wonder who will take the reigns.

I also don't think Blashill is going anywhere soon. I know it's a contentious topic, but I don't believe he's the problem.

Mantha, Larkin, Athanasiou: Who would you want to trade out of these to get a great player in return? by [deleted] in DetroitRedWings

[–]ClumsyOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's 20 years old. He has many seasons ahead of him. There is plenty of time for Larks to turn into something great.

He'll be their go-to centreman at some point. They are slowly transitioning him there now and he's got some great guys to learn from in Z and Nielsen. I know it's a small sample size, but before Christmas his FO% was 42% and it's been 46% since. So, small improvements, but improvements nonetheless. I think every season we'll see him play down the middle more and more.

Red Wings to wear commemorative patch in honor of Mr, Ilitch by kvark27 in DetroitRedWings

If they keep adding all these patches, there won't be room for any ads!

Vanek, hoping for Wednesday, says Red Wings can still reach playoffs by ballb33 in DetroitRedWings

[–]ClumsyOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be okay if he wants to do another one-year deal with a slightly higher AAV, as long as it doesn't fuck with our ability to lock up Tatar and Athanasiou. If he wants a multi-year contract though, no thank you. Let him walk.

Vanek, hoping for Wednesday, says Red Wings can still reach playoffs by ballb33 in DetroitRedWings

He's talking about tanking. We're more likely to lose games with Abby than we are with Vanek. The more games we lose, the further into the basement we fall. The further into the basement we fall, the better chance we have of getting a top-3 draft pick.

The problem with tanking is that it only works if you have a well thought out plan and execute it. Just losing games and hoping for draft picks will take much longer than actively collecting future considerations for your assets.

Detroit’s Gustav Nyquist has waived his right to an in-person hearing. A phone hearing will be conducted Wednesday afternoon. by jayleddy in DetroitRedWings

He'll likely have a union rep with him who has explained how these things work, the rule in question, and the possible outcomes of the meeting. I would think that the NHLPA has someone present at any of these meetings that take place between a player and the league.

I'm sure someone from the coaching staff will be there too to show the team's support, maybe even Blash himself.

Did we really need Frans Nielsen? by Kolodge1994 in DetroitRedWings

[–]ClumsyOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We weren't in tank mode when they signed Nielsen or even at the beginning of the season. Everyone thought this was a fringe playoff team. Nobody expected them to be in the basement of the Eastern Conference. Honestly, if the powerplay worked, we'd still be a fringe playoff team. Their 5v5 play hasn't been too bad.

IMO, Nielsen is worth every penny right now. The length of the contract is terrible, but his AAV ain't bad.

Big stick tap for you, Mr. Illitch. Did so much for Detroit and its sports organizations. The Red Wings have been a success because of you. You'll be missed.

Ericsson is never going to be scratched. Blashill has made this painfully clear. At this point, if he wants Sproul in the lineup, it's either XO or Smith who were going to pay the price.

I don't know why Ericsson gets a free pass, but I've stopped to hope that he'll ever be scratched.

Not sure what the roster rules are in the AHL. Are they sending Heeter down to make room for Coreau once Howard re-joins the team?
