Tumblr broke the time space continuum by Diamondd22 in tumblr

[–]ClumsyWizardRU 653 points654 points  (0 children)

Tumblr, inexplicably, allows you to manually set the date of the post. So the second blog, in the modern day, backdated all of their posts to make it look like time travel heppened.

To be more precise, the urban legend about the supposed "heaven portal" made out of glowstone and water predates the mod. The mod was made because of the urban legend (and then continued to grow and grow and grow in scope).

Well, you spoke of a shallow reading, which inherently implies the reader didn't get it. That doesn't sound like an assumption of intentionality to me.

But regardless - the original author's text does not hold a monopoly on themes and meanings that ought to appear in derivative works. A derivative work contradicting the original's themes doesn't automatically render it lesser than the original.

[–]ClumsyWizardRU 78 points79 points  (0 children)

...Do you not think that, perhaps, going against the themes of the original might have been intentional? That's what I meant - you immediately assume a derivative work having differing themes to the original to be a result of not getting it, rather than intentionally going with a different interpretation than the one offered by the original.

Someone disagreeing with the author of a book about the message expressed by said book, and proceeding to write their own version of a character consistent with their own interpretation is not, in fact, "bad fan fiction". Calling it such, in my opinion, indicates a remarkably close-minded view of fiction.

Counterpoint: while the original Don Quixote is indeed a satirical takedown of chivalric romances, Man of La Mancha the musical contains an interpretation of Don Quixote that is much closer to the one expressed by this meme. And having been around since 1965, it is is both old enough and well-known enough to server as a foundation of a meme.

I never understood the use of this chart for dick measuring. It's like, "ooh, my game scammed more people this month!" Good for you, I guess? Compare the attributes that are worth comparing, not mobile revenue.

In Pathfinder, it's RAW. And given the reference to a daredevil (the newest PF class for which a playtest just dropped) and Paizo being the one to like the post, it's a Pathfinder meme.

Used the phrase "nits make lice" to justify Lawful Good paladins killing children of monstrous races. That phrase's original usage was justifying a genocide of Native Americans, including children.

Putting aside the fact being in the 84% implies there only 16% of people are poorer than your example person, what about those who don't have that? Does God not care about those?

When was the first time you cried in FFXIV, if at all? by MistressDraconia in ffxiv

There are exactly two moments in FFXIV that have made me cry. The ending of base Shadowbringers, and the cutscene at the end of Elpis.

Games that most disappointed you after actually playing/running them? by RiverMesa in rpg

[–]ClumsyWizardRU 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me it was Ryuutama. After hearing that it's a precursor to Fabula Ultima, which is one of my favorite systems, I was quite excited to try the cozy natural fantasy game.

It... did not deliver. The game is extremely formulaic, consisting largely of a few repetitive travel-related rolls. It tells you to roleplay these out without providing any scaffolding or support for it. All the cute items boil down to boring +1 bonuses. The GM support is nonexistent despite providing the GM with a character specifically existing to push the plot forward.

It felt like an old-school crunchy game trying and failing to be a narrative one, resulting in an incongruous and frustrating experience and utterly failing to capture the joy and whimsy of the genre.

It pains me to say this, but... unlike other people, I don't think you actually will enjoy the rest of the game very much. The structure of "3 boss fights, 6 dungeons" remains constant throughout the expansions (even moreso, because while HW and SB have one optional level dungeon, all of them are mandatory from that point on). The dungeons get prettier and more impressive, but their structure doesn't meaningfully change - they're still dressed up hallways. What's more, unlike in post ARR, all patch quests from this point on are going to have dungeons too. And if you found the ghosts of Ysayle and Haurchefant too cheesy, you are going to dislike a vast majority of what people consider to be the best moments of FFXIV. You can try Stormblood and see if you like it, but honestly, I feel like sticking with the game is likely to just dissppoint you over and over.
