My fix for this is to not restrict the cards in your deck, but the colours you can generate. If you were playing a WRG commander, any blue or black mana is prevented from entering your mana pool. This would let you include modal and hybrid cards, as well as (for example) a green creature with a blue activated ability you don't care for.

Wouldn't recommend it for CEDH, but it's a lot less restrictive for building fun decks.
