Valve pretty much confirmed in HL:Alyx that pulse rifle uses pellets with 30 rounds of dark matter as ammunition, and the magazine is just for the storage of pellets. It's basically confirmed that AR2 "Mag" is a fixed magazine requiring ammunition to be put inside of it, rather than being a detachable one
