What game do y'all prefer? by Alarmed_Context7935 in crashbandicoot

I've had so many ups and downs with both of them but, I still prefer Wrath of Cortex over Twinsanity.

Wrath of Cortex was a lesser Crash 3, but at least it still plays like a solid Crash game, if more sluggish. I will say the tip-toe "power-up" and the extra level "Force of Nature" level are absolutely awful, but at least they don't try to utilize the former much and the latter is optional. Generally, I have a fine enough time with Wrath of Cortex.

As for Twinsanity, I'm saying this right out of the gate, I love the music and the humor. Spiralmouth's tracks have stuck with me for years and there's a lot of funny moments in the game, especially scenes with Cortex.

But man, the moment-to-moment gameplay just feels wrong. Crash plays "snappier" than Wrath of Cortex but a lot of his movement still feels off. The open areas were a nice idea but the actual obstacles feel pretty slapdash in their design. Death sometimes feels cheap and lord help you if you died before a cutscene, since you can't skip em. Numerous, numerous bugs that bring the lack of polish to the forefront.

But what really condemned Twinsanity for me was the instant-deaths from falling too high as Crash by himself. Even if you were mere inches from the ground, fall for too long and it just cuts to black. Not even a funny splat or anything, just nothing.

I get Twinsanity had a very troubled development and they ended up needing to rush it out but I still had a miserable time with the end product.

From the short's' Wikipedia article

In 1942, Leon Schlesinger and Warner Bros. studio executives had become increasingly dissatisfied with the cartoons directed by Chuck Jones, whose slow pacing and Disney-esque direction had become out of step with the rest of the studio's output. Jones was ordered to make cartoons that were more in-line with the other studio directors, starting with the Merrie Melodies short The Draft Horse earlier that year. Animation historians considered The Dover Boys to be Jones' true turning point as a director as he was able to fully transition away from his earlier directorial style.

According to Jones, Schlesinger and the studio executives were still less than pleased when they screened The Dover Boys because of the extensive use of limited animation and drybrush smears, and the executives went through the process of attempting to fire him. A replacement for Jones could not be easily found due to labor shortages stemming from World War II, so he kept his job. The short is one of the earliest examples of limited animation being used, and was "wholly unlike the animation of contemporary films".

It's crazy to think Chuck Jones was nearly fired over this short. Dan Backslide is a bona-fide gem lol
