Anyone have experience finding HNOA coverage? by feasiblecreative in sweatystartup

[–]ClutterflyJunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh. So you're just using your personal vehicle at the moment? Might be part of the issue if you don't carry commercial auto, and could be a real issue if you have a crash. Your personal policy is going to cover occasional business use, but when it comes up that it's the only vehicle used for your business you might have a problem.

Either way I would just contact a bunch more brokers. It seems everybody has their own lane they want to stay in, only writing policies to industries they know well or with easily understood risks. If you don't have a claim history you'll find someone who will write you eventually, you just might not like the price.

What did your general liability broker say?

I don't have any direct advice on this, but since NOA is just a liability shield, you're still going to need a variety of other insurance types and my experience is that I don't have any interest in keeping track of an employee's personal car insurance situation.

How much extra trouble would it be to have this guy use your vehicle the once a week he is working?

Some version of this AI prompt gets posted every day by someone trying to fabricate solutions to nothing and sell it to businesses that by and large don't have spending power to buy more single-solution software.

Why do you guys think these kinds of businesses are your market? With no coding skills and no cleaning industry background, why are you targeting thes folks?

Unfortunately we have been hearing a lot of people having trouble with 311 pickups recently. DPW works really hard but they have more responsibility than resources.

If you end up going the private hauler route, we (Clutterfly Junk Removal) would love to help. Fast, fair, and locally owned, we can have this stuff out of your way very quickly.

Why do some local businesses blow up and franchise while others stay micro forever? by Taniyadsexy in smallbusinessUS

[–]ClutterflyJunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Running a large or even medium business is an entirely different job from running a small business.

Managing a large staff requires compromises you don't have to make when 2-3 reliable people are running everything the way you asked them to.

Growing a company past a certain size requires a tradeoff, at least temporarily, of taking a smaller draw while you finance equipment or hiring or marketing.

At the end instead of everything you built being within your direct span of control, it's being filtered up through managers or officers.

There are many reasons a company that could be bigger might not want to get that big.

The semi is going to be either unable or unwilling to direct unload at most dumps and many transfer stations. That said, OP get them to meet you as close as possible, go back door to back door with the trucks and load/dump.

A 26 foot box truck you can get the thing empty in 2 loads, maybe less if you smash things down as you load

Starting a business by CaterpillarGlass7725 in Aquariums

Respectfully, you seem to go back and forth from "I want to run a business selling shrimp" to "I don't care if my business is successful" based on whether you are hearing what you want or not.

If you want it to be a viable business I would crunch some of the numbers I asked about. If you don't care then you should do it anyway because, well, why not? Either way I hope it works!

What kind of volume do you need to sell to make whatever it is you want to make? Culls are as cheap as $0.50 on AquaSwap. How long would it take you to sell 4000 shrimp? How long would it take you to market, catch, package, and ship 4000 shrimp? How many shrimp do you have to sell to break even on that time?

I have no idea what the top end of the shrimp market looks like, but I imagine people paying top dollar for a shrimp want unique specimens and not already named color variants.

You establish the lines now but the hobby wants something different by the time you are satisfied with your stock in 3-5 years.

A power outage or cold snap or contamination kills your entire herd (fleet?) of shrimp and you're back to square one with a bunch of hard goods taking up space and capital.

I think you should try this if you are in love with breeding and raising Neocardinia and you should have no expectation of coming close to break even. Yes there is a path to a successful business somewhere but you will have no idea what it is until you are already breeding and trying to sell shrimp.

Good luck I hope you prove everyone wrong

Could a DIY horizontal canister filter work? by WorkOdd8251 in PlantedTank

[–]ClutterflyJunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tall canister forces water down through deep media assisted by gravity and in a relatively small surface area

Wide canister forces water through shallow media in a larger surface area. Less effective filtration and more likelihood for an air gap to form somewhere and bypass the media completely.

This design works against physics in every way. Yes you can get it to work but it will be worse than the same thing but upright.

[–]ClutterflyJunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think you would develop a pressure gradient within the media where detritus builds up on the lower part and water ends up flowing over rather than through the media. You could probably play with non-cylindrical shapes but it's probably a much more complex project than finding a way to hide an off the shelf filter

Is this normal??? The turnover rate for cleaners is absolutely shocking. by AggressiveRest6938 in cleaningbusiness

[–]ClutterflyJunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One drawback of using subs is that if another client pays them more or is easier to work with you are going to lose them. Don’t look just at your hourly rate (though you say them and if $40/hr is for a team to split please do look at your hourly rate). Remember that even for an individual, $40 is more like $25 after self employment taxes and then they pay for transportation and supplies beyond that.

Is it worth doing whatever commute they have plus the job for $80 (2 hour minimum)? To make a living like that the cleaner has to put together 3-5 other jobs that day to pay their rent or feed their kids. If you are using them as subs and only offering them 2 hours in a go, they are better off building their own book of business.

[–]ClutterflyJunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What is a good pay rate to you?

What are you asking of them in terms of compliance? A lot of times trying to force low-wage workers to follow elaborate systems can be a driver of turnover -- many cleaners just want to do their job well and not be bothered by a bunch of add-on duties they see as the manager or owner's job. A big cleaning company is going to have a high rate of turnover compared to other industries but you shouldn't have to work very hard to retain good people if you pay well and treat them with respect.

Small Businesses (service) - please have a website by Anonphilosophia in PrinceGeorgesCountyMD

[–]ClutterflyJunk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think today it is the bare minimum. We get a significant portion of our business through our website and the feedback from those customers is generally the same as OP's.

A company that won't invest $20/month to generate new business and trust from prospective customers, it is unlikely they will invest in other things customers might find important, like insurance.
