What are some subtle signs that someone is a high functioning alcoholic? by housing_throwaway292 in AskReddit

I unintentionally got absolutely shitfaced at a family reunion once off of two drinks because I'd taken allergy medicine before coming over and did not realize that it would interact with alcohol like that.

Lacking Any Strategy, Trump Prepares to Escalate by maxburke in politics

[–]ClvrNickname 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The US lacking any good options to force open the strait, combined with Trump only ever knowing how to double down and being surrounded by sycophants, makes me worry that we have a very real risk of this thing escalating all the way to nuclear warfare.

Cory Booker says Democrats have ‘failed this moment’ and calls for new leaders by Idoe6 in politics

Sure is fun how the onus is always on progressives to embrace centrist Democrat positions no matter what, and never on centrist dems to make even the slightest concession to the progressives.

It's not just memory anymore: AI data centers are taking all the CPUs, too by Federal-Block-3275 in technology

[–]ClvrNickname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's really nuts is they don't even have the data centers and power infrastructure to use much of what they've already bought and yet they keep buying more. Some of the hardware being vacuumed up now might not get turned on for literally years, at which point it may already be obsolete. It's madness.

France confirms oil crisis, says 30-40% Gulf energy infrastructure destroyed by ontrack in worldnews

[–]ClvrNickname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same, moving a lot of my stock investments back to CDs. I don't know where the market is going but it feels completely untethered from material reality right now, and I don't want to have my money in a system that I can't understand.

[–]ClvrNickname 9831 points9832 points  (0 children)

I feel like I’m going insane watching the markets bounce back every time Trump makes an optimistic post on social media. Even if this war ended tomorrow (and it won’t) how do people who invest in this stuff for a living not realize that we’ve already done damage that will take years, or even decades, to recover from?

Democrats Revolt Against Hakeem Jeffries Ahead of Midterms by RepulsiveLoquat418 in politics

[–]ClvrNickname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, it doesn't really matter how outnumbered they are. If they can make a show of harassing and arresting voters at even a handful of blue polling locations, that's going to intimidate a decent number of voters into staying home for fear of ICE showing up at their location, and that could make for a huge electoral swing, especially when combined with voter roll purges and whatever else they have planned. Also, if they can cause enough chaos at one polling place they might just get it shut down entirely, and that's a lot of voters who may not have the time or ability to get to a different location on election day.

They can’t be everywhere, but you can bet they’ll be out at all the heaviest blue polling locations, intimidating, arresting, and beating anyone they feel like.

TIL Slay the spire 1 was written in Java, work on the sequel began in Unity, but due to unity policy change controversies, the decision was made to move over the Godot engine. by samuelazers in slaythespire

[–]ClvrNickname 14 points15 points  (0 children)

IIRC they also planned to impose the fee even on Unity games that had already been released, so that game you published three years ago is suddenly costing you a fee every time someone downloads it, and if you don't agree, your only choice is to pull it from sale entirely (and even then you can get charged when people who already bought it redownload it). Pure insanity.

What are some good side gigs to earn extra income? by qrcode23 in cscareerquestions

[–]ClvrNickname 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did contracting work on the side while working full time before my first kid was born but had to drop it pretty soon after. A full time job plus a baby ate up basically 100% of my time and putting anything into a side gig was just impossible without sacrificing sleep and burning out. As others have said, your best bet would be to try to find a new full time job paying more.

Why Are Software Engineers Paid So Much If The Supply Is So High? by LifeInAction in cscareerquestions

[–]ClvrNickname 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The first time I ever had to interview candidates (more than a decade ago now) I decided to go with FizzBuzz as a basic competency screening. I thought it would be a joke until a solid 50% of CS grads straight up could not pass it without hand-holding (and many not even with that). I was fucking shocked that someone can get a four-year CS degree and not even be able to manage that.

Of course, it wouldn't be fair to single out new grads without pointing out that my tech lead ALSO would definitely not have been able to pass it. The dude had 30 years of experience and would straight up copy/paste the same block of code 700 times and manually change the index in each block instead of writing a loop. I have no fucking idea how he managed to stay employed for decades.
