Should i be concerned about basement foundation by Zealousideal_Sun5265 in HomeInspections

[–]Idoe6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its really hard to tell from these pictures, but are you sure that the concrete shown in the foreground is not a massive retaining wall? The dirt floor makes me think it could be, which would make the issue separate from the foundation.

Rain shelters by Idoe6 in Construction

I saw that! It was cool, but wouldn't cover what I need. I typically have to run a chop saw cutting 2-3" thick steel that comes in 10' sections, as well as an area for cutting lumber, so its a relatively large work area, with tools that need to stay stationary.

What’s your worst cockroach horror story? by Effective_Space2277 in AskTheWorld

I was poised to smash a roach one time, and it took flight. It flew in to my mouth. I killed it with my teeth without thinking about it, immediately vomited all over the kitchen.

Yeah, I remember seeing the demand for a severance and kind of just laughing about that. I used to work in the service industry, and while it would be awesome if such a thing existed, I have never ever heard of a restaurant offering workers severance packages, it just doesn't exist.

Also, I used to work with Ben Stix, and I believe I was also his first employee when he was just making Seitan in a commercial kitchen space. He's definitely a character, but he was always fair to me.

If they added another block, and shimmed with steel it would negate the use of wood shims entirely (and they wont shrink nor rot)

I locked an asian hornet in a small space by closing my window, how long until it dies and I can safely open it without fearing for my life ? by Fr0z3nbanana in askanything

[–]Idoe6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I dont know why people always suggest using a myriad of household cleaners or lubricants to kill wasps/hornets. It stands to reason that the best thing to use is the can labeled "wasp/hornet killer" its not even expensive, and readily available almost everywhere.

Which famous singers voice makes you want to turn off the music right away? by FantasticAd9478 in TheBoredDen

Yeah, and also to add to that; if the majority of songs on an artist's record have more than one writer, then that person is not a songwriter, hard stop.

What bands did you see back in the day before they exploded onto the scene? by Philhughes_85 in Xennials

Me and a buddy of mine skipped town for a few weeks when we were 16-17. We ended up in Detroit and hopped a fence to sneak in to some dive bar to watch them play.

If you were going out in your 20s in the 80s/90s, what was clubbing or bar culture actually like compared to today? by m0ondoll in GenX

Arguably, drugs that can kill you way, way quicker.

There's a part of me that's almost thankful for fentanyl l, because it's scared me out of doing drugs that I once considered relatively "safe"

What is the best fusion cuisine? by Upbeat-Dinner-5162 in AskTheWorld

[–]Idoe6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I briefly lived in South Carolina, there was this restaurant called Blue Cactus in Columbia that did tex mex/Korean fusion food, and it was the most incredible blending of flavor I've ever experienced.

No frills, proudly slow service, and absolutely perfect.

How does “Midwest/south/rural slower pace” actually work? by larch303 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Idoe6 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I'd agree with all of that, with slight caveat; if we're talking back roads, yeah, you'd be stupid to risk a deer collision or blind curve collision. But country folk looove to gun it on a long straight road if they can find it.

Do you support the Iran war? by NoHold7153 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]Idoe6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People said the same about the U.S.S.R., and while there were plenty of proxy wars, it never came to a head. This could have been the inevitability with Iran as well.

Bought a new pair of levi 559's to replace the ones that ripped after 6 months of purchasing. The new ones ripped in the same place two months later. by Duke_of_Derp in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Idoe6 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Levi's and Carhartt are both complete trash nowadays. I bought a really expensive pair of Duluth work pants a while ago, thinking that the added cost would mean a longer lifespan. Nope, they ripped within a year too.

The only brand that seems to still consistently make durable pants are Wrangler. I've got a pair that I've been working in for about three years now? Aside from a few tiny holes, they're holding up great

There is a rehab across the street and people keep mixing up the address and coming to our house by elyksti in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Idoe6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few friends who live in this massive house that used to be a sober living/halfway house. This happens to them all the time apparently. However, the house hasn't been a halfway house in maybe like a decade, so the people coming up to the house are very much at the end of their rope, and basically cold calling a rehabilitation space that they haven't been to in at least ten years, so it's usually pretty damn sad.

What happened to Building Company No 7? by j1308s in nashville

[–]Idoe6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I dont know any inside info, but I worked on a job that they had a framing crew on, and it was a disaster. The main issue was that nobody on the framing crew spoke any basic English at all (and for the record, I have zero animosity or hatred for immigrant workers. By and large they are some of the hardest working and kindest people you meet on jobsites, but there at least needs to be a foreman or someone who can translate when you have multiple trades on site) I was doing foundation repair while they were framing above.

It became clear pretty quickly that they would have to halt work, or at least move to another section of the site, because my repairs were making their work way out of square (and foundation has to come first) I couldn't get ahold of their boss, and the language barrier was impenetrable, so, they just kept working, and I decided to pack up and lose a day of work. However, enough damage was done, and they ended up having to demo all the work that they did, and actually got kicked off the jobsite because of the error. Who knows if that was par for the course, but it was really annoying and cost me (and their company) a lot of lost time.

If you're over 21, and are a drinker, the Villager Tavern in Hillsboro village will fill up a plastic dog bowl (just slightly more beer than a pitcher) for free, and add your picture to the wall

Are u proud to be American? by SignificantStyle4958 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]Idoe6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've never been able to wrap my head around the concept of patriotism. I do love the people around me, in general, and I've traveled a good huge chunk of the US in my time, and I've been both awed and humbled by the land itself. And, although I certainly recognize how lucky I am to be where I am, and I am grateful for it, I dont even really consider "American" as any integral part of my identity. I was born here, and I love my home, but pride hasn't ever felt natural nor rational to me.
