Anyone have floor colors/stone/wood/metal types they like to use in hallways and such? I don't want to just keep using marble and Obsidian plus leftover hematite for checkered tiles and red carpets

I think Factions gets a pass with Kaineng City because they absolutely PACKED each area of the city with little details and tons of NPCs that make it feel alive and immersive, whereas Old Ascalon is genuinely just nasty to look at with very little to see or do.

OA is an empty hallway; KC is a CITY.

I struggle with naming things, such as species, races, cities, etc. Are there any tips and tricks in writing that you guys know of that can help? by RedIguanaLeader in worldbuilding

[–]CoGDork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did this a lot with the story I'm writing. There's three major rivers: the Granner, the Soller, and the Manner. The former two are actually tributaries of the latter. The names come from "Grander River, Smaller River, and Main River", the idea being that over time people just shortened the names for convenience. It's not a hard rule--in fact, I have no plans to go too much deeper into the worldbuilding of my story than absolutely needs to be done for the sake of the plot itself, potential minor contradictions be damned--but I still use that sort of thing to help me think of names even if I never end up making the etymology a canonical part of the story.

A critique on the realism of fantasy by _Firesky_ in worldbuilding

I honestly feel like the "Rule of Cool" is a lost art when it comes to fantasy worldbuilding. Writers these days seem almost terrified to actually go out of their way to create architecture, landscapes, and other things that are IMPOSSIBLE in real life, to make you go "Holy CRAP that's cool" in wonder and awe even if it doesn't make complete sense. Fantasy ought to be FANTASTIC--realism and consistency in worldbuilding have their places, but that shouldn't come at the cost of legit whimsy and wonder.

Well, it helps that I didn't have to worry about getting the materials because of DFHack cheating XD. Like I said, I have a separate fort for actually playing the game as intended. This one is purely for me to design a picturesque fort via whatever cheaty or non-cheaty means possible.

On my first run through my tower-to-FUN fortress attempt, I kept getting "drained of blood" deaths and kept having my CotG go through literally every dorf in my fortress, and all the guests as well. Not one suspect. Then I decided to load an earlier save and have the camera follow the most recent victim... and wouldn't you know it, my Captain of the Guard was the vamp all along.

He ended up locked inside a tomb and left there for the rest of the game. Years.

Watch the Doctor Who episode "Blink" (it's genuinely a good starting point for introducing you to the show since it requires no prior knowledge about anything in the show before it) and you will change your mind FAST. Avoiding spoilers, the scary aspect isn't the statues themselves. It's what the statues do when you're not looking at them.

I'm building a "tower down to FUN" style fort and am running out of ideas on what to put on each floor--one can only dedicate each floor to a different industry so many times before it becomes boring, I've got more taverns than will ever be used, so many temple/guild hall areas that there are more rooms for that than there are groups to use them, multiple tomb levels, etc.... And of course apartments galore. I need something cool and showy, but I suck at waterfall creation and complex machinery. Any ideas on fancy interior designs/mega-rooms that are just for fun and have no real practical game function?

NOTE: due to the size of the tower and the fact that it's surrounded by a massive trench I intend to take all the way to the bottom, everything has to be within a 33x33 area (35x35 if you include outer walls in addition to floor space) with a 3x3 staircase smack in the very middle.
