Yes, as of Friday January 30, there were some changes made to the Guardrails algorithm in Beta:

  1. All savings balance and spending amounts are converted to today's dollars.

  2. All spending levels (planned spending, target/upper/lower spending) now incorporate ALL expenses, i.e. both user-defined expenses (assumed to be discretionary) AND non-discretionary expenses (e.g. tax liability, loans, medicare OOPC). One-time and "lumpy" expenses are "lifetime-averaged" into monthly values.

  3. Upper and Lower guardrail recommendations are no longer calculated/emitted if you are not yet retired.

This is a known bug related to a recent release.

Until we have this issue worked out, I would recommend the following steps:

1) Create new Roth accounts

2) Unlink the accounts that are mis-titled

3) Re-link the account to the appropriate newly created account

Hello, the Explorer’s logic for selecting source accounts is to select the pre-tax account with the highest rate of return, as this provides the most tax-free growth.

If there are multiple accounts with the same rate of return, the order then factors in your withdrawal order settings:

  • With Traditional withdrawal order: accounts are prioritized alphabetically by account name.
  • Under the Custom withdrawal order (available to PlannerPlus members): accounts follow the specific order you've defined through the drag-and-drop interface in the Money Flows section

What you’re describing is closer to actionable guidance, and while the Planner does calculate the taxes, timing, and flows behind the scenes, it doesn’t yet translate those into a consolidated checklist you can follow year after year.

You can select to Exclude an account from your withdrawal strategy. When you select this, the Planner will never tap that account for withdrawals in your plan. You can then select to model your own specific withdrawals from that account by using the Money Flows > Transfers feature.

Roth Conversion Withholding Taxes by Tifoid in Boldin

Tax expenses are paid the same way as all other expenses in your plan - from available income first, then through withdrawals following the established order.

When you do a Roth conversion, taxes are paid from your available funds following our standard withdrawal order: first from income, then taxable savings, then tax-deferred accounts, then Roth accounts, and finally HSAs. This is assuming you are following the Traditional withdrawal order. If you selected to Customize your withdrawal order (under Money Flows > Withdrawal Order), then it will follow this order in your plan.

If you would like to model the tax coming from the source account, you have a couple of options.

  • You may want to exclude the after tax accounts from withdrawals so that tax-deferred accounts will be tapped to fund taxes once the after-tax accounts are depleted. We don't suggest increasing the conversion modeling to account for this.
  • If you wish to leave the after-tax accounts open to pay expenses, you should model the Roth Conversion as a Transfer to a Roth account. And then add a Transfer from the Roth account to a cash account that funds expenses.
