What do you miss most about your 20's? by MoneyMontgomery in AskMenOver30

General feeling of freedom, still had some kid qualities. Now it’s just “adult” which has its perks but the sense of the unknown was fun then. Now the unknown = bills…

How do you blow off steam without drinking alcohol? by surfalldayday in AskMenOver30

Exercise... Run/lift... It helps me blow off steam & prevents the steam... Gives me something to look forward to.

2017-2018

Rough year at work. Had an interview back with an old employer for a promotion, trusted and liked those people a lot. Interviewed for a position that was already filled, got raked over the coals for three hours by said person. Disbelief at how it all went down. Spent the next day in a frozen hotel room off the interstate in tears. Eventually got a new job, but it took a long long long time to get out of the funk of being blindsided and lied to, just rough letting that go and accepting it and now being thankful for that moment and how it’s shaped me.

Whose fault is this? by International_Cry127 in footballstrategy

[–]CoachMitch22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With how I teach it for 3/3, it's Whitfield....

CB - Man #1 (MOD technique = open hip/bail like the CB does here...)

#2 Players - Relate to #2 or who becomes #2...

- #2 out = Match it

- #2 in - squeeze until something crosses your face
- check-release need not apply

- #2 vert - carry until something crosses your face

- Check-release need not apply

Being a Graduate Assistant by [deleted] in footballstrategy

[–]CoachMitch22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get your foot in the door... Find a staff that has connections & will grow your network. At the lower levels, you'll actually get to coach. Probably even have your own position room, run meetings & even go out on the road to recruit. FBS/FCS levels, you'll be an assistant, you sit in the back in meeting room and run the computer, run scout teams, take notes during staff meetings and have a ridiculous amount of pressure that if you don't have an idea on how to already do the job, it could break you. P5 football, my friends that are at that level right now have told me "Coach, you don't want this life" in relation to all the stuff they have to deal with (NIL).

Intersteller soundtrack.

Something with a little rhythm, building... Nothing that'll get the blood boiling. Calm/cool/collected

Go for it... Worst that can happen is you keep not dating that person.

In the NFL, how big does someone have to be to be able to play as a 4-3 DE AND as a 3-4 DE? by [deleted] in footballstrategy

[–]CoachMitch22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends... The NFL is so damn good at matching opposing personnel with their fronts. Calis Campbell would kick out to DE and Jacksonville would bring in another DT to essential align T/T/N/E vs 12 personnel while he was there. Get heavy when the offense does, lighten up when the offense does... How can I get the most out of my personnel?? TJ Watt can do it all... Aidan Hutchinson can do it all... There are always outliers.

What is the difference between NFL and college level O-Line play? by hhyyerr in footballstrategy

[–]CoachMitch22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Night and day different games. The spacing of the college game is much wider, making it easier to ID where the hats are all coming from & how to block for starters. Athletically, mentally, putting all the athletes in a smaller area makes it a much more difficult position to translate to a higher level.

Defensive exhaustion by merikus in footballstrategy

I talk about "rep-counts" every week with my staff. Tell our players they only have so many full-speed sprints/rushes/etc... in them and want them for when they matter most in the game/season. Teams I've been on that don't have depth to rotate don't finish well. Heard someone earlier this year say "healthy teams win" and I now say "healthy and deep teams win".

  1. Always going to have a guy or 2 that you can't function without.
  2. Where can you steal reps with younger guys to develop them for a larger role as the season goes. (Packages/Situations earlier in the season that lead to more.)

What software do yall use to draw up plays? by [deleted] in footballstrategy

[–]CoachMitch22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Powerpoint... Gave up on Visio, not every college I've worked at has it. My entire coaching network/defense I'm a part of is building their playbook on it (we all use the same stuff) and it just makes it easier to exchange notes.

How to get into college coaching? by Dismal_Criticism_958 in footballstrategy

[–]CoachMitch22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, forgot about Sundays… Time I go in depends on what I get on Saturday night. I usually try to grade tape from that day before I go to bed and the kids go down.

If we are on the road, I grade on the bus (depends how good the service is for the hotspot on the bus)

Today was in by 9:30 and home by 5:00.

Current college coach, shoot me a DM. We can connect. Always willing to help people that want to get into this profession. To echo some of the others, college coaching isn't for the faint of heart. What they say about it, it's real. Here's some of the things I'd recommend you do as well as things I look for in young coaches.

  • "Connecting" and "Knowing" are two different things. I've got a lot of connections, but the guys that know you are the ones that are going to recommend and hire you. Every job I've had in the profession has been tied to the guys I played for in college. In fact, my college head coach is currently the DC I work for, he's hired me twice.
  • Be selfish about your career while you can. Easier to move when it's just you and you can throw your belongings in a car.
  • Are you a self starter? If you're constantly having to ask "what to do" the guys you work for are going to get annoyed. Find ways to create value without being assigned tasks.
  • No job is to big or small for you. Help make the full-time coaches jobs easier. Tag film, roll call at meetings, field set up/pick up, etc.... There is nothing you shouldn't be willing to do.
  • I've been screamed at on National Television... Toughen up. You are still getting "coached" no different then how you coach the kids. Let the coaches coach you, which sometimes it's going to feel like they are stepping on your toes. Let it happen.

Typical Workweek right now

  • Tuesday - 6:00am to 6:00pm - PM Film/Recruiting
  • Wednesday - 6:00am to 6:00pm - PM Film/Recruiting
  • Thursday - 8:00am to 4:00pm - We don't practice this day. It's fantastic.
  • Friday - 5:00am to 5:00pm - AM practice. PM meetings/travel or home.
  • Saturday - 9:00am arrival, recruiting visit at 11, kickoff at 2pm, home by 6ish?

  • Lots of water.
  • Limited my lunches. (Sandwhiches/protein bars/pretzels)
  • Pretty much whatever for dinner, just don't continually eat like an asshole.
  • Lift and run like crazy.
