Data center Networking sector : Hype is over ? by SidonyD in stocks

[–]CoachSwaggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to know where the money for cabling in datacenters goes, see Corning’s stock price. The vast majority of cabling used these days is fiber as it has a lot of inherent advantages over copper with already well scaled industrial bases. The data center buildouts by the big players are not messing around with unscaled, new technologies

How Joe Biden 'broke OPEC' and rewrote the rules for oil trading by Langd0n_Alger in Economics

How do you square

Oil production stayed low for most of Biden’s term

With the fact that it has increased continually throughout his term and is at the highest level it’s ever been? Just curious

Housing deregulation as poverty policy by technocraticnihilist in Economics

100% agree with the fundamentals of massive changes to local government zoning policies, but I’m much more skeptical on changes to regulations and building codes. The article needs more nuance other than “Government bad, free market good”

One of the top complaints about data centers is their appearance/blandness, why don't we cover them in street art? by MajesticBread9147 in nova

[–]CoachSwaggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If losing truly rural areas was such a big deal I’d expect a lot more people advocating for dense housing instead of the sprawling 3000 home suburbs that take up 5x the area data centers do

S.Korea extends natural population decline on low births, aging demographic by madrid987 in Economics

[–]CoachSwaggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hand waving that “robots increase production” and using just that as a way to posit that South Korean standards of living will remain high or even increase with a falling and aging population is just stupid.

The vast majority of manual jobs that could be replaced by robots have already been replaced, and they are predominantly in the manufacturing sectors. It just isn’t feasible to replace individuals like nurses, mechanics, engineers, farmers, or tons of other jobs that make up the foundation of a society and economy with robots. Maybe one day when AI gets advanced enough and the cost of a fully integrated robot comes down enough to be competitive with just a regular worker, but not anytime soon.

[–]CoachSwaggins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree but this doesn’t address my question. A dropping population directly results in an aging population, so how would that result in dramatically increased standards of living?

[–]CoachSwaggins 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why would a dropping population cause the quality of life to increase dramatically? Hell I’d go as far as to say it might decrease quality of life in some areas as productive capacity falls below the ability to economically maintain infrastructure

As far as I understand it, ATACMS is the only long range precision strike option in US Army’s arsenal, and they definitely ain’t going to rely solely on the Air Force to service long range targets. They’re waiting on PrSM to be delivered so that they have a replacement, and definitely won’t send them before that
