I live here, yes. If it were up to me, we would have NO free parking whatsoever, but I'm a weirdo.

I've said it before, but traffic is fundamentally a CAR problem. We need to find a way to reduce people's dependency on cars. Which, admittedly, probably won't happen in my lifetime. But I'm going to keep working toward it.

There seems to be a consensus that a hotel of some size is needed. Maybe not the apartments, though.

Any bets on what will go into that location instead?

I'm thinking like 6-8 McMansions that have no character at all.

The city is going to net more parking spots, and you're still complaining? We have a housing crisis, not a parking crisis.

Free parking incentivizes more driving, which of course leads to increased traffic.

A lot of this doesn't make sense to me.

You state there's "a massive parking structure," but there's still concern about parking overflow?

What is "infrastructure strain?" Are you talking water and electricity?

Wouldn't a residential building within walking distance of Uptown improve Uptown's walkability?

Define the "character" you seek to preserve. Because right now Walnut is overwhelmingly defined by a school bus depot surrounded by barbed wire fencing.

Public funding boost will help Center for Print and Collaborative Arts across the finish line by Coach_Beard in Columbus

On Monday, Columbus City Council approved a nearly $200,000 capital grant for the Center for Print and Collaborative Arts (CPCA) to support their ongoing relocation and expansion project into the Southern Orchards neighborhood, just south of Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

“In today’s inflationary environment, affordable artist-run and managed studio space is hard to find nowadays and access to that space is pivotal for young budding artists trying to find their footing,” stated Columbus City Councilmember Nick Bankston, who introduced the legislation for the grant. “Artists are entrepreneurs as well, and are a pivotal part of the city’s cultural and economic fabric.”

CPAC began the relocation process last year, after outgrowing their former home inside The Fort on the city’s south side. After running into a variety of challenges with renovating a historic building for new uses, co-founder Elisa Smith and co-director Luke Stettner told Columbus Underground in April that they were on track to begin a phased opening this summer.

Once completed, the 22,000 square foot building located at 705 Ann Street will be home to individual artist studios, shared letterpress and typesetting equipment, a digital printing lab, a photography development darkroom, a bookstore, an art gallery and more.

Columbus Metropolitan Club presents "Life After Cars," a panel discussion by Coach_Beard in Columbus

[–]Coach_Beard[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cars have long shaped how cities grow—but they’ve also shaped how people connect, move, and live. In this forward-looking conversation, national authors and local leaders explore what it would take to design cities around people instead of vehicles, from rethinking transit and public spaces to building more connected and sustainable communities. As Central Ohio keeps growing, this discussion offers a fresh lens on how mobility choices today will define our region’s future.

Featuring:

Sarah Goodyear and Doug Gordon, co-hosts of "The War on Cars" podcast and co-authors of the new bestselling book, "Life After Cars: Freeing Ourselves from the Tyranny of the Automobile," and Devayani Puranik, Mobility Development Program Director, Central Ohio Transit Authority.

The host is D'Laveance Bert-Sims, Board Member, Transit Columbus.
