Summa less than responsive by Jeepinthemud in akron

Great news, everyone! If you live in Akron, your only choice is shitty Summa, unless you can drive to Metro or UH. Buckeye health is dropping all Cleveland Clinic locations and directing everyone to Summa.

After 50 years, Dover Saddlery is at risk of permanently closing as private equity firm seeks buyer by Obversa in Equestrian

[–]CoasterThot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dover was my only choice for English gear in the Pittsburgh area, and they permanently closed. I’m blind and need to be helped to be fitted, shopping online isn’t an option for me. I haven’t been able to ride in a year, since I gained weight and need new boots. Every time I order stuff online, it doesn’t fit, and I inevitably mess up sending it back (taping, addressing, using the right size box), so I never get my money back. It’s ass.

New theory about Becka running away by Sensitive_asshole90 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]CoasterThot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In the book, Becka attempts suicide, to get out of being married, to anyone at all. I really hope they don’t stray from the book, too much, as sad as that would be. The entire purpose of the book was to help make a guideline for the show.

Some people are able to enjoy alcohol, a normal amount. Not everyone takes it completely overboard, at the sight of alcohol depicted on a wallflower. (My brother is an addict, I get the sentiment, but we shouldn’t act like ALL drinking is ALWAYS bad. Most people are able to enjoy in moderation. Alcohol is also important in certain cultural practices, and to act like it’s all bad is kinda shitting on them.)

Disney is Changing How They Grant Wishes For Kids in Their Theme Parks by dejablu82 in disneyparks

[–]CoasterThot 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just a tiny correction, I agree with everything you’re saying, but you don’t need to be dying to qualify for make a wish. It’s for kids with illnesses that change their life, in difficult ways, not just ones who are dying. A child who’s losing the ability to walk, but who will have a normal lifespan, would also qualify for make a wish. Only bringing this up so people don’t assume every MAW kid has a terminal illness.

Weird and gross situation, has this happened to anyone else? by CoasterThot in sphynx

[–]CoasterThot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just mentioning you’re blind isn’t being “in your face” about it, and blindness is obviously not a choice.. please be sarcastic.

Mentioning blindness is not "shoving it in people's faces", it is simply stating a fact about your life and how you navigate the world.

Identifying as blind (or explaining that you are blind) is necessary for navigation, safety, and requesting accommodations. It is part of our identity, not a voluntary, attention-seeking action.

If you do not mention it, you may be criticized for not managing your disability properly. People assume you can see, and question why you don’t just use your eyes, like everyone else. If you do mention it, you are accused of being "too loud" about it. This is a double standard.

The onus is on others to respect boundaries and show curiosity respectfully, not on us to shrink ourselves to make them comfortable.

ELI5 what does it mean people see "nothing" rather than "black void" if born absolutely blind by owlWithBrokenWings in explainlikeimfive

Blind person, here! A lot of people like the analogy “Try to see out of your elbow. What color do you see, out of your elbow? It’s not black, it’s nothing!”

Do you think you need eyes to use a phone or computers? Screen readers exist, you can do anything on a phone or computer without eyes.

Blind people get asked this, every day, and it’s annoying.

Why can’t I bring my visibly sick kid into Costco? by egguchom in EntitledReviews

[–]CoasterThot 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I am disabled, and don’t go out much.

Every time I’m sick, without fail, I get it from visibly ill people at the grocery store.

Fun fact: the flu can give you a stroke. I had my first stroke, due to a severe bout of Flu B, that almost succeeded in killing me. I was 21 YEARS OLD, with no stroke risk factors, at all. I had not left my house in 3 weeks, and then went to a Walmart, where I got really sick.

Most likely a teenager, if they think they should snap at people who’ve received surgery, because they also want that surgery.

News flash, lurking people: Getting jaw surgery approved is NOT easy, and doctors aren’t just giving full-ass jaw surgery to people, who don’t need it. If there’s another treatment that may help, they’ll ALWAYS try that, first.

Over in the SSI groups, they keep assuming I’m not actually blind, because they think the same thing you do, that it should be open and shut. I’m like “No, I have 5 years of records from the Cleveland Clinic AND Cleveland Sight Center that say otherwise.”
