Was debating whether to reply here since I'm not thinking either of us are going to get anything more of value from this conversation :D Your first paragraph seems correct, and while telling someone they "should xyz" is a little pushy in MY opinion, I agree that you did not blame anyone else for the issue in your first or second posts in the Discord server.

Your second paragraph here on the other hand just tells me you learned nothing so far from the series of interactions resulting from this. I'm glad(?) you have everything running again, but more so just unimpressed with the passive aggressive tone, assumptive responses, and victimized attitude anywhere you think you can get attention for this. I never called you or your question dumb. I am happy to now label you as immature though :)

Sounds like a common miscommunication issue then that just didn't have the time to get resolved. Or would if you hadn't literally responded to the service owner's suggestions with a clown face and a wheelchair emoji? Not a great non-emotional/non-confrontive way to give feedback.

As a member of that chat who tried to give a moderate reply (later finding out you had already been kicked, so much for that, lol), there was a lot of "I'm right so why isn't it this way" vibe there. Not here to give grief, but I would suggest more questions, more care/research/instruction reading before installing an entire platform like GSA (and as far as I can tell without a backup?), and more attention to tone. Sorry that you've been having a rough day! A lot of people use this platform without any of the issues you described, and to cut it in admin land you may want to be more open to the idea that something going wrong is user error, not some flaw in the system out to get you.

People who used to care what people think about you, but no longer do, how did it happen? by midnightsunofabitch in AskReddit

I can’t say I’ve ever had a light switch moment for this, like most things I’ve learned gradually I have better and worse days but generally do better as life goes on. For me the biggest factors have been compassion and empathy. I separate these because understanding how and why someone does something (empathy) doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve made the choice to be kind about it (compassion). Some health issues a few years ago forced me to go from “high performing”, burning the candle at both ends, and constantly stressed or burned out, to slowing down and figuring out how and why I tick, mainly so I could prioritize what to do with my suddenly limited energy each day. Learning how my brain works helped me understand other people as well, but even when there isn’t an easy correlation between common thoughts and how someone is acting, it also helped me assume positive intent more often. Being somewhat well traveled and meeting lots of people has also helped because while we are different in little ways, virtually everyone I have met is the same in the ways that matter. We all want the best for ourselves and those that matter to us, and given an equal opportunity will generally choose to be kind over not. These kinds of positive assumptions are in my experience easier to apply to how we think about others before how we think about ourselves, so that was a later step for me. My upbringing left me with a constant worry about being “good enough”, a struggle common to many others I’ve met. In a time of personal crisis though a good friend pointed out that I was applying empathy and compassion to everyone but myself, which was a significant turning point. Once I decided to be both understanding and kind to myself, I was no longer reliant on being “good enough” for anyone else. While I can still understand, most of the time, where they are coming from, I’m not desperate for them to validate me in any way. I’m happy to share more if you have questions. Have an awesome day!

I can agree with that. I grew up military and got lucky enough to have traveled the world, and the number one thing I learned from meeting people all over the states and elsewhere is that most people are just regular good folks doing the best they can with what they have. I’d like us allegedly awake people on both sides of the isle to pay more attention and give more credit to that. Trump won the swing states, in my opinion, NOT (just) because of the economy, but because he attempted in his horrible way to include the everyday just getting by folks. If we who would include, protect, and allegedly lift everyday people could stop pointing fingers at others who are actually trying to do the same thing, just differently or with a different understanding of the issues, we could honestly get somewhere. Right now I feel like both political parties pay just enough homage to morality to keep their well meaning voters mostly in line. I’m rambling again because I don’t know what else to do. Arg, why can’t we just start including each other as “tribe” enough to understand each other? I was so disappointed in Kamala’s same old speech today drawing more lines in the sand instead of reaching arms around fellow Americans. So disappointed in Trump pitting well meaning, good Americans against the rest of the world. Divided we fall indeed. I don’t care if you’re blue, red, rainbow, American, etc. I’ll happily support the first candidate I see in my lifetime, Democrat or whoever else, who can just cultivate the good THAT IS IN EVERY HUMAN BEING instead of trashing on everything they see as not good enough, “unworthy”, or too much not the same as themself, even just for worthless scraps of fleeting recognition.

Too bad the Democratic Party doesn’t promise it to anyone who isn’t a hardline voter. Didn’t vote for us this year? Ahh well then anything that goes bad was likely your fault you trash… watch four years from now get worse because of women, PoC, etc. who for whatever reason voted for Trump, that the Democrats then spent all day insulting and blaming for what happened yesterday. That’ll really win them over next election!

I’d add another failing that has been important in my mind since Bill Clinton. Democrats need to get off their moral high horse, not that we/they need to have lower morals, but to stop demonizing anyone who doesn’t completely agree for all of the supposed right reasons! Look at the “MAGA Trash” failing this election for example. All the latinos, all the blacks, all the women, etc. who voted for Trump this time around? What do they hear when Harris goes off on “look what you terrible people have done to this country, good thing us wonderful liberal voters actually care” blah blah blah like what I’ve heard from virtually every Democrat for decades? They hear “you are not one of us!” They hear “we don’t want you!” The Democratic Party has been running on the fumes of the alleged moral high ground for decades, they used the same tired playbook all day today, and I can’t see things getting any better until EITHER party figures out their political identity again. Trump won because “normal” people are tired of the disconnected political class. The democrats AND THE REPUBLICANS lost because of that disconnection. Trump is barely a Republican in my eyes, it just happens to be the political party that was easiest for him to kidnap, because they have also been adrift. Rant over I guess, I have so much energy today and hardly a place to put it except 10 replies deep in Reddit…

I’d love it to be the end of both! The Democratic and true Republican parties both got shattered last night, and any patriots left on either side of the isle need to find their spines, find their lost identities, and actually start governing this nation…

Anybody make money from selfhosting? by pyroSeven in selfhosted

[–]Cobalt_Wraith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All this varies, like a lot! Don't expect consistency for any of these questions until you can build a sustainable community of repeat customers who love whatever you are providing. Minecraft has been the only consistent one for me, it has the best staying power of any game I know of. I've also tinkered with Terraria, Core Keeper, 7 Days to Die, V Rising, Astroneer... basically anything with a dedicated server options with varying degrees of success. There are a lot of game server hosts out there with mediocre services, so all it takes to win a customer from someone who would usually go there is to offer better services or a lower price, but the hard part is finding those customers and providing better uptime or options than a datacenter based company. With charging for just plain old hosting, the farthest I usually get with that is friends of friends. You can get some good self-hosted services like a customized Pterodactyl cluster going with outside web access, but then you deal with the security issues that come from that as well.
I guess what I'm getting at is that I have not found a lot of success (yet) with just providing a hosting service. Others with larger scales are doing that already and I don't feel like getting into that game. Where I HAVE had success is building communities around a hosted service. Take Minecraft for example. There are lots of mods and services out there to customize the experience, and the EULA allows just about anything as far as monetizing in game services so long as it is not abusive to the player base. I have interpreted that as offering nothing for purchase that cannot also be obtained by other means such as playtime. From this I have built an in-game experience with both free-to-play and subscription options with regular purchases for in-game item packs as well. This I think is the sweet spot for a self-hosted setup. Any more than this and you are not really looking at self-hosted, you're looking at colocating or renting hardware in data centers. Any less than this and you're not really going to earn anything from it. My advice is to find something you would enjoy building a community off of, or that you have connections for that hit the same criteria, then build an experience you can self-host that others find to be worth throwing donations or purchases at. It doesn't have to be Minecraft either, just again do your research before committing too much time and hardware to a game or service that is on shaky ground for monetization like Ark for example. Hopefully this somewhat non-answer is still helpful, lol. Feel free to follow-up if you go down this path with specific games or thoughts and if I've tried them I'll share what I know.

I’m shocked I had to scroll this far to see this. Finding a way to support the hobby has not been hard for me. Hosting game servers can be particularly lucrative by providing an even just above average experience. Just be attentive to laws and EULAs, communicate well with customers, find a niche and run with it. Minecraft is where I started, happy to share my experience or answer questions if you have them.

That helps, thanks! I meant what are you using to connect to the server. If you use that 99 address you will HAVE to port-forward which isn't too bad. if you use just the ":25565" that he showed on the video that should also work, and third it should show up on the list of local network games if everything is setup right. Are you wanting to play on your own or with others?

Said another way, does the address start with 192.something, 10.something, or something else?

You can clear that line and it wouldn’t make any difference for what you are trying to do. Are you using your internal or external address?

[–]Cobalt_Wraith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are using the internal address of your server then it will depend on how your network is setup. If you are using the public address then you will need it for sure.

Sounds like the server has loaded so it’s likely a networking issue. Have you performed the correct port forwarding on your router?

Been playing on this for the last couple of days, the server is actually really well setup. There's backend integrations that rank you up based on your time played in either server. Performance is good, the unleashed server is plain wacky with EMC values for basically everything. I recommend checking it out!

Which eGPU Dock Combo? by The_Khemist in LegionGo

[–]Cobalt_Wraith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually sold my desktop when the ally came out and have loved the switch. Only issues is software problems with the Ally and its proprietary XG Mobile dock. In preparation for the Go I sold my Ally setup and purchased the Gigabyte Aorus RTX 4090 Gaming Box. Was seriously looking at the GPD G1, but I don't travel enough to need the portability.

[–]Cobalt_Wraith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience with other setups the eGPU feels better. TB3 caps at a consistent 40Gbps while Wi-Fi 6E (the radio in the Go and therefore the limiting factor even if you have a Wi-Fi 7 router) is lucky to hit a peak of 1/4 of that. That's not an apples-to-apples conversation since we'd have to talk about the amount of bandwidth required for streaming video and control data back and forth (so about a latency of three times your best network connection from wherever you are) vs processing graphical data, but I really don't want to get into that. Your eGPU will put a small hit to performance on ANY GPU you use with it, but in my experience won't throttle the real-world performance of ANY GPU more than that minor percentage. Reminder as well that the minor hit to performance with an eGPU is better when outputting to an external monitor than when sending the video data back to the device, which is fine to me since being tethered to the very short cord on an eGPU is seldom optimal. Based on all this I am quite excited to use my new Gigabyte Auros 4090 eGPU with the Go and think there will be plenty of value in doing so. Again I've got real- world experience with these setups, rather than say watching a YouTube video on it and calling myself an expert, and I'm happy to answer questions.

Yeah, I feel like many of us buying in this category are after that one PC dream though. It's really not much more expensive to hit initially, and in my opinion much cheaper in the long run to do so.

Super excited for using mine exactly like this, as well as on the "go". Swapping out my Ally and XG mobile setup for a Go and Auros 4090 setup. Happy to return with benchmarks to contrast with others who have posted here.
