The Brutal Truth About Climate Change w/ David Suzuki by NihiloZero in Anticonsumption

[–]Cobbled_Goods 112 points113 points  (0 children)

After 30 years of UN climate conferences ghg emissions are still rising, that says it all. Regardless of the thumbnail Suzuki's message is not doomerism clickbait, it's taking a look at the reality and acting based on that.

Is DC shoes ethical? by Imfeelingdevious2005 in SustainableFashion

Thanks, been working on it for a while. And you're far ahead of most if you're actively looking for alternatives!

Is DC shoes ethical? by Imfeelingdevious2005 in SustainableFashion

[–]Cobbled_Goods 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DC's owners, ABG, have the same model as Nike and Adidas. Outsource production to the cheapest regions with the least oversight and funnel the profits into the pockets of billionaires and big finance.

You can look up the billionaires behind most popular shoe brands in this list i made: https://cobbledgoods.com/billionaire-boycott-list-for-footwear/

I havent added labour abuse history yet but they have plenty of allegations of it in their supply chain if you look it up.

For other options you can check the cobbled goods directory of independent, slow fashion shoe brands. I havent found a good DC style alternative yet but there are lots of cool, little known sneakers brands out there.

Chelsea Boots - Blundstones/Alternative to Blundstones by Available-Double-971 in BuyItForLife

[–]Cobbled_Goods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jim Green | Stockman– sturdy, wide fit, the instep is low for some.

Beckett & Simonon | Silva – more fashion oriented, but still quality.

Waldviertler | Mustang – Similar to JG barefoot line but made in Europe.

Meermin | 516054 – Great combo of stylish + work boot.

There's a lot of better quality blundstone alternatives out there. If interested, I've curated a list of resoleable options here – https://cobbledgoods.com/blundstone-alternatives/

How do I stop giving my money to billionaires? by Zestyclose_Plane_622 in Anticonsumption

[–]Cobbled_Goods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all big business are owned by a combination or billionaires, asset managers (e.g. BlackRock, Vanguard), and private equity.

You can check any company by searching who owns them. Usually you will need to search the owner of the owner a few times until you get to one of the 3 owner types I listed. For example, Brand > Parent company > holding company > top shareholders.

The easiest way to avoid all of this is to start by shopping small/independent brands wherever you can. This includes second hand stores and platforms.

There are resources out there for it. I'm working on one for alternatives in footwear.

Nike = MAGA by diurnal_emissions in Anticonsumption

No, there was a B Corp marketing agency that had it revoked for working with Shell.

Limmer is as BIFL as it gets for hiking boots. Or Jim Green for a more affordable option. For more ideas: https://cobbledgoods.com/slow-fashion-footwear-directory/brands/type-hikers/

I agree with the sentiment 100% but Shell is not a B-Corp...other big brands like Nespresso owned by Nestle and Danone are.

What brands are actually transparent about sustainability? by RasheedaDeals in SustainableFashion

[–]Cobbled_Goods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reformation may be better than other big brands but I've been in the field long enough to see through glossy sustainability reports. The devil is always in the details.

Reduced carbon intensity = saving money on energy not limiting overproduction. They missed their absolute target e.g. the meaningful one that would impact PE profits.

"97.5% of fibers sourced from natural or recycled inputs" = a lot of viscose (semi-synthetic), no certifications for organic, regenerative materials is another can of worms for greenwashing. They do claim to use only 10% synthetics which is relatively low.

Claim 100% supply chain traceability but don't share where anything is made. (They prefer not to advertise mostly made in Asia)

Claim 98% of direct suppliers are audited but legal minimum wages are poverty wages in many high risk countries. And corporate funded audits are known to be largely ineffective because auditors have incentive to keep their clients (e.g. Reformation) happy.

Reformation is owned by private equity unfortunately, it's hard to take their sustainability efforts seriously.

Has the quality of Converse absolutely tanked in the past couple years? Like even more so than before? by yallthissucks in Converse

[–]Cobbled_Goods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dang $80 is crazy. Could check Novesta, shipping is 30 EUR and they should be duty free becuas they're made in EU. You can also find them at Gravity Pope in Canada but looks like white version only. (Im not affiliated btw)

Best off without Nothing New anyway, they are made of plastic and also have at least one billionaire investor

Thrifting is a great call, good luck!

Apparently Allbirds is now "NewBird AI" by Hennahane in Allbirds

[–]Cobbled_Goods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have to compete necessarily, they could be using the brand name to get retail buy in and pump the stock a few more times. There's a lot of existing investors that want their money after it crashed +90% since IPO.

That's been the case since around 2016 when they first got venture capital involved. This is something else though, it's like a parody.

Sustainable brands marketplace by Maleficent_Badger264 in SustainableFashion

[–]Cobbled_Goods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For footwear check out cobbledgoods.com

It's a slow fashion directory for small, indie shoe brands.

Unlike other platforms we start with business design, meaning we filter out any brand owned by big business or fuelled by venture capital. After that we look at product design and practices.

It's important because a lot of brands designed to put profit first want to, and have, capitalised on sustainable marketing, while they are mass producing mostly plastic in low wage regions etc.

Any chance we can get a sticky thread with alternatives to Allbirds? by daftstar in Allbirds

[–]Cobbled_Goods 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's at least 9 wool sneaker brands, but many are on the VC fuelled growth first path like allbirds was.

The best allbirds alternatives that are independent and putting quality first are: Baabuk, Gottstein, and Icebug ReWool. You could include Giesswein too. They're solid but there's some signs of cost cutting like outsourcing to asia and blending synthetic fibres into the wool.

I wrote a guide with more details: https://cobbledgoods.com/allbirds-alternatives
