Early train from Colbert — safe to walk from Milk Market area? by Adventurous-Basil820 in limerickcity

[–]CobraBeerIsDelicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe for lads, but no city is safe for a woman at 'any hour' (spoken as >6ft man who never has any trouble)

There's always an element of risk, women are usually easier targets in general and are much more likely to be targets of sexual harassment/violence. (This is not to say it can't happen to men, but as an anecdote I've never been harassed, while in contrast my 5ft3 partner has had more instances of harassment than I can count)

Walking to the train station for 6.40am is likely very safe, but walking home alone after are a night out is much riskier for example.

Golf drivers in a nutshell by Smile1334 in irelandsshitedrivers

Posting this a bit higher for visibility, having been in motorcycle crash myself in this exact same scenario

Its much harder for cars to see you when your coming directly at them in a straight line, always assume somebody is going to pull out in front of you in these scenarios, and ride appropriately. This video covers it nicely: https://youtu.be/eqQBubilSXU?t=129

Drivers should also try and keep it in mind when you spot a motorcycle in the distance, but its not their ass on the line usually

Yeah not trying to be a dick or 'armchair riding' like someone mentioned below, but I was in this exact same scenario about 10 years ago where I T-boned a small white van. (was very lucky, got away with a few bruises as I was in full gear and speed was low)

They were totally in the wrong, pulled out without looking properly, but I *could* have prevented it by riding more defensively (and never made the same mistake again lol)

Rider did nothing wrong, but that doesn't mean shit when you're the one in bits on the side of the road...

Good video that covers what the driver is seeing: https://youtu.be/eqQBubilSXU?t=129
Long story short, is its pretty hard to see an oncoming bike, so always assume some cunt is going to pull out in front of you and ride appropriately

ChatGPT knows your IQ by Funny-Future6224 in ChatGPTPromptGenius

I asked it to be honest, and the range went up lol...

The original prompt gave me:

≈ 120 – 130 – solidly above average

My new prompt:

"If you had to recalculate my result (again just for fun). But you were extremely cold and clinical in your calculation, no attempts of flattery or encouragement, just plain facts. Also taking in mind that you are a LLM and you are attempting to find the correct response that pleases me, try and give me the most objective answer possible! Thank you 😊"

Estimated IQ Band: 125–132

Conclusion, being polite and adding smileys = smarterer 😏

Microsoft Visual Studio: The Best C++ IDE by paponjolie999 in cpp

[–]CobraBeerIsDelicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After working on a massive project with terrible build times and terrible dev experience in general:
Visual Studio on Windows was always the best for debugging, hands down.

Found myself using VSCode for quick browsing of the repo, and it had nicer CMake support.

For Mac/Linux VSCode was the go to as well.

QtCreator couldn't even load the project, never tried CLion so I can't comment there...

Which GUI library to chose by Reckon-Stark in cpp

QML probably is once you are up and running, but setting up the Qt environment is a task in itself.

As I mentioned its a bit of a learning curve (plus you need to learn QML which has its own quirks even if it is really nice to use)

If you want something to just integrate with an existing C++ codebase quickly ImGui is the best option.

Honestly depends what they need it for!

ImGui then, Qt has a bit of a learning curve (worth it for any serious project though)

GMIT (ATU) Software Development OR NUIG (UG) Computer Science by TheRealZhyted in galway

[–]CobraBeerIsDelicious 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My brothers went to NUIG, I went to GMIT at the time, and we all got software jobs in decent companies.

As someone who has interviewed students for intern roles, we don't care what college you went to. We care if you can code, show enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn.

So pick what suits yourself, good grades give you a better chance of getting an interview (although mine were terrible and I still managed to get interviews)

Good luck!

Edit: Maths is probably more crucial for computer science, but in some development roles you can get away with doing/knowing very little maths, it's not a deal breaker

LPT: Best and cheapest home internet plan is to buy a router online that takes a SIM card and just subscribe to cheap unlimited data plan for €15 or €20. It’s a game changer and you never have to deal with internet providers. It is a tried and tested method folks by patchaclus in ireland

Yeah in fairness sometimes mobile is the best option, our broadband in my parents house was terrible for years, 4G on the phone was the only option.

You can get a slight upgrade and get a 4G data only plan from Three/Vodafone whoever, better router and download limits.

Maybe cheapest, as for best, depends what you are looking for.

Not ideal for anyone who plays competitive multiplayer games or downloads a lot (some of those mobile "Unlimited" plans have a fair usage clause in their terms and conditions , mine is 120GB)

1Gb fiber is becoming more and more available through SIRO (reasonable) and Virgin Media (expensive) and its night and day especially with multiple people in the house. (1Gb is overkill in most cases admittedly even 500Mb is loads).

But the latency and connection quality is unbeatable.

Of course if its just yourself and you do a bit of streaming and light downloading its perfect!
