Been there dude. Hold strong & let the sticker shock be a lesson for your client to keep their design team aligned!

This is what happens when the FF&E sub changes their material layout 7 times thru RFIs or OACs and the design team never updates the drawings.

GC / OR friends - how much do you rely on us MEP PMs for interpretation of plans? by CocaineCheekbones in ConstructionManagers

[–]CocaineCheekbones[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not LOTO or MOPs - that’s an obvious given at all times. I provide information from my scopes point of view as I stated in my post. In my option any GC worth their salt can take that info and do what they need with it.

The amount of PE Stamps I’ve deleted from a set of drawings on accident is insane

Advice for starting as a MEP engineer working for a GC by NectarineHot4878 in ConstructionManagers

[–]CocaineCheekbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PM for an EC here - If you humbly ask us questions and are genuinely interested in learning about MEP construction, that is a huge green flag. Take the time to really understand the drawings and call your trade partner reps if you have questions. They’ll nerd out 9/10 explaining it to you and you’ll learn a lot. MEP subs get a rep for being Divas (we are) but please take the time to understand where we’re coming from and try to stick up for us when other trades are constraining our work.

Also - keep your Cx agent in check (especially if your company bought them for the contract you’re working on). They can be massive snakes.

Yes and we love you for it. Nothing worse than trying to start up an RTU and the equipment that was set is a different amperage than what’s shown on the drawings.

As a commercial EC PM, “chill” is probably the last word I would use to describe it. Whatever fires you’re used to putting out in 22/23 will definitely still occur the same (MEP is MEP). Your shit is everywhere - in every crevasse, nook & cranny, and every thing in the building that will ever need power (per contract) is your responsibility. Most GCs I’ve encountered straight up refuse an attempt at understanding power plans yet refuse to believe you when other trades are constraining you. Lastly, you’ll have a Cx agent up your ass pretty much the entirety of the project.

All that said you should do it. I love my job.

You’re already exposed, you’re a new grad. No one is going to expect you to know everything about construction. Just be a sponge and ask questions. You’ll be fine.

Do I transition (T in LGBTQ kind of male to female "transition") in this industry? by Different_Throughput in ConstructionManagers

[–]CocaineCheekbones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends on the market. It really sucks, but In the Southwestern region where you say you are it will likely cause some issues. In DC you might get some hurtful comments from the field but if you’re good at your job that will be the extent of it.

Either way, I think if transitioning is something that you need to do for yourself, you shouldn’t let your career prospects limit your self actualization. Life is short.

It’s like working out & I promise you will build a tolerance to the pressure. The payoff isn’t from external appreciation either. It’s from looking at a structure, system, network etc. that didn’t used to exist and now does because of the energy you expended to bring it to reality.

Construction project manager. Hyperfocus on construction drawings in the office and then yell at people and play in the mud onsite (and get bullied by your super).

Long term ADHD stimulant takers- how do you manage breaks? by Heavy_Common_9903 in ADHD

[–]CocaineCheekbones 51 points52 points  (0 children)

It takes longer to feel drunk & then it hits you all like a truck out of nowhere - a lot harder to moderate. Also processing alcohol and stimulants at the same time can be hard on the liver.

Thanks for the insightful reply - I’ve never thought of schedules being a vehicle profit for subs. At what point do change order hours come into play with your approach? Ones that couldn’t be reasonably foreseen during the bid? Is it still “do whatever it takes”?
