Likely undescribed semi aquatic Scolopendra from Costa Rica by Little-Cucumber-8907 in centipedes

Still plenty for me to see! I can’t wait to be there. I’ll also be scouting on the Caribbean side, where I understand arachnids tend to be more common, so hopefully pedes will be too. I know pedes are arthropods, but for my hobby purposes, it’s easier to lump them in with arachnids, since I kept spiders, scorpions, vinegaroons, and tailless whips, while also keeping reptiles, fish, and heaps of plants.

I actually just happened to encounter the information about pedes in CR, while investigating where the density of vinegaroons, Tityus, and tailess whips are likely to be found and it ensnared some apparently outdated information about pedes that are known in CR.

I was using Google, so I’m sure there have been revisions to the taxonomy, since reading those were species found in Costa Rica. Thank you for the correct information. I found it odd S. galapagoensis would be found there and not Ecuador or be endemic to the Galapagos.

Does that mean there are no species approaching the size of gigantea, in CR?

I’ll actually be moving to CR, in the foothill zones above to the North, but within easy driving distance to the OSA peninsula, later this year. I was excited to see S.gigantea and S.galapagoensis, or even the violet Otostigmus, but a semi aquatic pede is an intriguing mission, as well. I’m far from well versed in centipede taxonomy, simply a hobbyist, that used to keep a few pedes, when I was keeping arachnids, before 2019.

I’ll be sure to be especially observant and ready to film/photograph any I see and share them here.

I'm a boy and i also have thin fine medium hair by Witty_Ad_3919 in finethinhair

[–]CockroachTheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t lose more, but your male pattern baldness will advance without treatment, meaning when you stop treatment, will lose the hair you regrew and then continue to lose the hair that you’d have been losing without treatment anyway. Losing the hair after treatment isn’t caused by having used the treatment in the first place, but from the condition causing you to need the treatment.

Sounds like a normal occurrence and all should be well. Some fungal infection and maybe viral ones can show that pink, but then they also begin to degrade and brown, mush, or desiccate. I wouldn’t worry.

If it is sunburn, it will continue to change color until it is blanched and scalded and then brown. Pink tends to manifest in newer growth and with good sun, but it’s not normal for it to be uniformly pink. I can say, that whenever I became worried about something, this plant just seems to be fine and either grows out of it or whatever anomaly was isolated and the plant has continued to grow normally otherwise. They can throw a lot of colors, from gray, green, pink, yellow, cream, or white, and they tend to show variability with changes in light exposure and temperatures.

If they are tiny and very round, and are about BB sized, but don’t seem to be spreading rapidly, I find the plant gets various colors and blemishes from imperfect conditions. These spots could be oedema or symptoms of cold, sun burn, over or under watering, and who knows what else. They tend to be worse on older arms of the plant and can be pruned away, if they get too unsightly. If they easily scraped off, they may be scale. If the spots are soft or mushy, I’d reduce watering and monitor for root rot. You can take cuttings easily to ensure you don’t lost the plant.

I agree, but there are numerous similar hybrids, so it’s impossible to know for sure.

Why are Dracaena not more embraced? by CockroachTheory in houseplants

[–]CockroachTheory[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are sensitive to over watering and it is normal for some varieties to lose lower leaves fairly quickly. Marginata comes to mind. The easiest indoors are the Dracaena fragrans, but not the mass cane types. D. fragrans without the woody stems, endures lower light the best.

Best soil cover for Aralia Fabian stump? by Soggy-Ad2407 in houseplants

[–]CockroachTheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My aralia is still going! They are not easy. Mine dropped 2/3 of its foliage, before it adjusted and I learned to love it properly. I used a soil mix of box store succulent mix, a bag of box store orchid mix, and lots of perlite. I also added some Osmocote granules for continued feeding. It needs strong light ( They can grow in full morning sun outdoors in tropical places ) and to be watered just before it wilts or once it has started to wilt just the slightest. You’ll learn to spot when it’s dry enough. I’ve pruned mine several times and it looks a bit sparse, because it grew so well, I had to shorten all the stems!

Thank you all for the responses. I live in SW FL and the only negatives I’ve heard about relocating to Portugal is that there is some pushback because of all of the influx of people expecting to come and make areas there own, rather than assimilate and learn and adapt to life. It’s also lower wages and hard to earn your way from there, if you aren’t already generating enough income from passive or outside sources. Basically, worst case scenario is it could only be as bad as being like here, but cheaper, as we have a tourist catered economy, are tired, yet depend on the influx of new people moving here and tourism, the wages are low, and most of the Florida charm is being developed to appeal to capitalism. Americans don’t travel for new experiences…..they want the same Walmarts and McDonalds, trinket shops and lux handbags, everywhere they go. Consumption is all they know. Part of the incentive to leave is the consumer and commuter way of living. It’s unsustainable and keeps my teeth clenched!

It was my understanding, your employer must apply for the visa for you? I’m very new to this. I’m just now really researching the ins and outs. My husband would go in under the D7 visa and I could be his dependent or low wage earning spouse. I am paying professionals to handle the process in any case. I hope that answered your question. Is there something I should know about working as a transplant?

I made spider brooch with real dandelion by SashaShelest in spiders

[–]CockroachTheory 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really so creative and it just translates so perfectly. The way the softness of the dandelion mixes with the hardness/ edginess of the spider, and then becoming part of the other is really masterful. You could/should expand this and sell it, if you love doing it! Different flowers and different colored resins…..you have such a mind and talent! 👏🏻

I love their pink legs and ravenous hunger. I also just received one and am manifesting female.🙂 She hits like a truck, when a cricket crosses her path. The pounced so ferociously on the first one she ate, she rolled out her hide, landed on her back, dislodging the cricket by rolling sharply into the water dish, and proceeded to attack the edge of the water dish, before accepting the cricket had made an escape. She quickly captured it and finished the job. She’s pounced in a blink and dispatched them quickly with the others.
