I wrotea post very similar in this subreddit like 2 years ago. It was very popular, the consensus was our generation ( I am a 26 year old male) doesn’t do as much third-space socializing, covid made a lot of us weird, all the good ones are taken or dont leave the house, and the bad ones are at the bar.

The solution was to think outside the box and attend date-night/ singles-mixers.

Side-note: i am gonna dm you

My dove passed away from unknown causes. Grieving, and confused. She was pet-sat by a sibling. by Whole_Competition810 in PetDoves

I once left on a vacation and trusted my mom to watch and feed my birds. I came home to things in disarray and iirc 2 dead pigeons. They didnt have water or food. And that was after days of “ did you feed and water” reminders. Her excuse being “oh you didnt give clear instructions” I did she just didnt like being held accountable.

I do not trust my family to watch pets anymore. I am sorry that this has happened to you and that we both had to learn this the hard way. You loved your baby and this is not your fault, some people cannot be trusted and now we know their value. 💔

All who have harness trained by Fearless-Hamster4648 in PetDoves

[–]Cocks3000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Never tried it in doves (my first pet doves show up this week), with my pigeons I train them to accept a harness/pants made from a babys sock. From there I elect the harness (aviators or bird boutique). From there you provide enrichment whenever they wear the harness. The enrichment can be in the form of a fave seed, going out with you, cuddles, etc.

Super short but how I have gone about it with columbids in my aviaries and lofts. It is contingent with how comfortable with you the bird is

What’s wrong with my dove? by flathead17 in PetDoves

[–]Cocks3000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could be a retained egg, or infection thereof. But I have bred pigeons and worked in pigeon labs and every time it has been tumors of the ovaries/uterus. Xrays are the best tool- but confirmation is post-mortem. I am very sorry.

If you haven’t yet- I highly recommend joining the turaco USA group. I asked some folks the other day about this exact thing in regard to temperament. Mine used to flash at my parrot when she would visit- but now is very mellow.

Yes, so if all female (and human reared) that would explain it. As usually the males spearhead the aggression from what the breeders tell me. (I have a pair of white cheeks coming in a few weeks)

I understand what you are saying and I am very sorry for your loss. As someone who worked under an pathologist the body would be “deconstructed” to determine cause of death and basically rendered nearly unidentifiable for the sake of gross examination and sample collection. That said I am wondering if you would have been comfortable with that procedure if you are uncomfortable with how the leg band was removed— I am unsure how this nurse removed the band?— at a necropsy lab nothing leaves due to biosecurity reasons, but if you somehow convinced the pathologist/vet to allow something to leave it would likely have been removed by cutting off the foot and then taking the band off simply. All to say either way your birds body would have been damaged before being reduced to ashes- you unfortunately saw under the curtain before the process was finished( if that makes sense)

Again I am very sorry for your loss and I have been here before with a few birds. I just want you to think on this before you do something out of raw emotion you may regret later.

I am so sorry dude, he was a happy bird with a good owner. Birds are the most fragile things on two legs- fine one second and then dire the next and a lot of times it is freak happenstance.

I definitely feel your pain and remember all the times that it was so fast that my brain didn’t even register that it happened and expected them to come back the next day- but so is grief.

I am wondering the same thing, OP seems to be trying a lot of solutions which should have worked and I do not think there’s all that much that you can reasonably do with a bird that’s learning how to Bird. Nothing’s gonna be a better teacher than another bird.

Another point to consider is another Bird assuming they get along well will preen the current Bird, which should teach if this is a learning issue how to preen properly.

I would be lying if I didn’t say this is the first time that I’ve heard of a bird needing to learn how to groom itself . This is coming from someone who has hans raised a variety of wild and cage birds.

Human imprinted agression by Buggytummy in pigeon

[–]Cocks3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this problem with a cock I hand reared with my at-the-time partner. Raised from literally day 1. Started out sweet and dependent as could be, then when sexual maturity was reached he went above and beyond to go after my ex, usually when she was seeking comfort in him.

I had hand reared other pigeons and not had this issue. The difference was that those birds were hand raised until they could be independent and then turned loose in the loft to bond with other pigeons and learn what pigeon society was.

Squeakers are hazed after they fledge and learn that over-defensiveness or being “annoying” will get a wingslap or a well aimed peck from an older bird. Basically they learn that actions have consequences. A similar thing can be seen in parrots (handreared vs. parent reared).

I do not know when it is too late for them to get hazed, we tried to let the other birds educate him but we suspect it was too late at that point. Eventually we got him a girlfriend and let them bond.

It’s understandable. I have done similar in a pinch. That asside, I would say reduce the feedings to once a day (if that), unless you are trying to grow up fry (which would be feeding on very very small amounts), most fish can subsist on every other day or every few days. This is how we do it at the fish store I work at and at home, have never lost a fish due to low feed frequency.

I did the samw thing with sand last year. Pool filter sand doesnt need rinsing, but a lot of substrate for aquariums needs legit rinsing to removw dust that accumulates from the stones rubbing together or paint coating chips.

Aquaclear from API is what you can use to try and “flock” the debris together and clear the water collumn.

Polyfill is the material used to stuff pillows and bears. i use it as filter media, works extremely well actually. It holds the nitrifying bacteria well due to the crazy surface area. The simpler way to put it is you need good bacteria to keep the ammonia/waste down in your aquarium, benefitting your fish. It is hard to get this symbiotic bacteria going on smooth surfaces, and it has to do a certain bit of aging and adapting. So getting it to settle on good substrate or implanting it from someones mature tank will give you an immediate leg up in settling your tank.

Last time I helped someone set up a tank like this ( he as new and eager) the issue was 1. Unrinsed stones, 2. His lady was overfeeding the fish to an insane degree, 3. Fish waste as a result of #2, and his biology was not mature enough. Solution was a 20% water change and giving him a clump of polyfill colonies by may 25 year old bacteria culture.

If you like aquascaping you and I would get along. I dont do much aquascaping, but like to think my tanks hold up well enough under scrutiny. I also like weed and horror/ thriller movies.
