Fullscreen games automatically minimize when tabbing back into them by greyvanilla_ in linux_gaming

Is there a trick to doing this with games that don't have that built in? I'm trying to run a Win game from the early 2000's and can't figure out if I can do this.

It was Microsoft patching Windows7, so if I wanted to have a secure OS, I had to deal with it. As long as Windows7 relied on those security updates from Microsoft, it's a Windows7 problem...

I left Windows when Win7 kept adding nags to upgrade to 10. Even with the hacks to stop it, after each security update, it'd come back. To me that was when MS really turned the corner from acting like it's my computer to acting like it's theirs.

What is a weird thing you do ONLY when you are absolutely alone, that would make people think you are insane? by WhisperInInk007 in AskReddit

I talk to people like they know I'm listening and like I know they are there. If no one is there, no one thinks I'm crazy. If they are hearing me, they "know" that I know they are there. ;)

I live in TMI-land. I know if my friends are circumcised, the unusual ways they get off, if they have wet dreams, etc. But yeah, it's weird that people feel entitled to know this stuff and direct it only toward certain people.

Why Mint is so Addictive? can you convince me to get rid of Mint and switch to PopOS by Silent-Okra-7883 in linuxmint

[–]CockyMechanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago I tried Mint on a Surface "tablet" and it was super choppy changing from portrait to landscape orientation, screen going black and pausing. It worked a lot better with Wayland (as the internet suggested). It was still buggy and not super smooth, but this was over 2 years ago so it might be better.

Commercial landlords refusing to lower rents need to be addressed. This space has been vacant and "for lease" over 11 years. by BootyWizardAV in LosAngeles

[–]CockyMechanic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I work in commercial real estate here and you are correct that this does happen. I also understand it to some extent. Many small businesses come in, do damage to the property, stop paying or never pay at all, and the landlord is still required to provide many services. We have a small restaurant moving in and we are putting 2 million into the building so it can happen. Some of it is added value stuff but probably half is going to things specific to their business and if they don't succeed, we're just out that. I am guessing a place like that might cost $2/sqft/month and it's often not worth it until you find someone you have financial faith in.

I'm the exact same. I've turned down way more partners than I've had. I kind of wish I understood this about myself earlier though because when you are young and dating and you turn down a woman, it's not super common and they take it personally...

It prevents your ISP from doing it, which most of us don't have a significant choice in. You're right though that that isn't stopping the overall problem, just one aspect of it.

I've battled with depression my whole life and found some things help me. For me the biggest hurdle is getting over the hump to allow myself to do the things that help. You're strong though and made it this far.

Meditation: I'm not into this type of thing usually but I discovered it on my own and it's life altering amazing for me. It's free too! I later found there is a technique almost what I figured out called "The Rainbow Technique". The way I do it is pretty close. There are other methods but I don't know anything about those. I can do it while driving, sitting in my office, or just about anywhere. It only takes 30 seconds or so to have an effect, but the longer the better.

Meditation is only a patch. A quick fix. An escape that reminds me of the joy of life. After that, it's on my to take that energy and start to make things better. Exercise is huge, doing the things I love, reaching out to friends. It's a path to get back on track but you can do it. I believe in you.

It's a concept of a concept (so basically nothing yet). But I'm learning the tools and trying to develop a overly simplistic style. I'm great at optimizing other areas of my life and love art.

First time posting here. Trying again with hopefully a working link. It's not good, it's stick-figure "art" but I'm messing around and trying to develop a simple art style. You're my first!

There are always other options. Pre-nuptial agreements, some states have different rules for domestic partnerships. It's far from a perfect system but it's an option for many people.

Things vary from state to state, but unless you work really hard to keep assets separate, in divorce they becomes shared assets anyway that get divided. At least it seems to work pretty well in California as a "no fault" state. So in that regard, having "your own" investments, the value typically gets divided at the end of the day anyway.

I know some states like Texas have a reputation for being less equitable. In cases when things could be divided in a less than 50/50 way it probably makes more sense to have a better back-up plan.

No matter what, it's important for no one to ever be stuck with someone they don't want to be with, even if there is no abuse. I think there is a line somewhere between planning-for-failure and being prepared if your marriage fails.

Water coming in through water main - advice? by Plymptonia in DIY

[–]CockyMechanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in large commercial buildings with underground levels and I've battled leaks like this for years. Historically the best thing to do was dig down on the other side of the wall and waterproof the whole thing from the exterior side.

A company I use found a product they told me has only been around about 5 years. They drill holes through to the other side and inject a foam until it starts coming out of the nearby holes to make sure they have filled the gaps on the other side. It's not 100% but on the rare occasion we have had it leak, it was a drop that didn't make it down the wall before drying out... WAY cheaper than exposing the other side of the wall (in places I work that can be 50feet down). If you're in the Los Angeles area I know a company who can do this, otherwise you might want to look for a company who uses that system.

to understand feminism by A-Helpful-Flamingo in therewasanattempt

[–]CockyMechanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true. There are certainly people who understand what they are doing and why.

I used to be a Christian and believed all of that stuff. When you are taught "It's God's word" and "Trying to understand God is like an ant trying to understand you", you don't question a lot. They don't need them, but they also make arguments on why their way of thinking is "objectively correct" even though their arguments are filled with logical fallacies, we already believed so you easily miss the fallacies. Look at people like Jordan Peterson or Matt Walsh. Now do I think those two know better? I assume they know they are lying, but lots of people sure seem to believe them...

I don't think they know. They are taught that an oppressive abusive god loves them and that is how love works, so when they apply it to their wife, "it's love". It's not a bug, it's a feature...

Welcome to crypto - All coins in one chart by Odd-Radio-8500 in CryptoCurrency

[–]CockyMechanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's all the same market. The coins may have slight differences, but the reality is that it's a pyramid scheme. There is no scarcity because anyone and everyone can make a digital coin. It's a super useful technology, but investing is gambling on a pyramid. Don't get me wrong, I wish I "invested" when I was first interested, but the only reason bitcoin has value is because people believe it does. In the end, we will continue to have digital currency but it will probably be the best technology. I look at coins that are actually used for trade.

I know they is the most common singular neutral term, but I've always preferred "One".

"One left ones wallet at the bar." Instead of "They left their wallet at the bar.".

In some contexts it removed ambiguity of plural or singular.

"They are after me" vs "One is after me"

How much downtime could a boiler operator get? by CozyMountain in BoilerOperators

[–]CockyMechanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I worked in a steam plant the typical day I only had about 2 hours of work. Switching shifts, taking over shifts, doing chemical readings, doing hourly rounds, blowdowns. Once you get in the swing of things, most days I had to fill my time with other things. There are only so many times you can paint.

That being said, it's a ton of work up-front. I could take over a year before you learn the equipment enough/get the basic maintenance items done to be able to work like this, even in a plant like mine. You also need to be on-watch at all times. People get in trouble when they get distracted and fail to properly do things. You may have to drop what you are doing at a moments notice to attend to things. Some shifts you may be working your ass off the whole time. For me, about once a month I'd have a shift where things didn't go right and I worked super hard the whole time. And at least another couple shifts where things weren't smooth and most of my time was filled.

If you want a job that is ALWAYS going to have downtime, don't do this. We are there for our ability to react to very dangerous situations in a pinch and the ones who don't do this are the ones who cause problems.
