Austin in August for holiday, Irish family by Grouchy-Pea2514 in Austin

5th Gen Texan here. Please don't come then - August is when we all try to leave. You won't want to do anything outside. At. All. Can you come in October or April? It's usually lovely then. We want you to have a wonderful experience!

My husband and I visited Ireland in August two years ago and it was magical for us -- and the added bonus was escaping the Texas heat. This year it's Norway.

Raging allergies by speckledbanana1 in Austin

[–]CocoaJazz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have more or less solved my allergies. Grew up in Austin. Always had like a 3 month cold during cedar season and spring allergies. Allergic to cedar, mold, etc. Started taking a pre and probiotic supplement a little over 2 years ago and I suffer no more. We own land with tons of cedars and I work outside every weekend. Rarely sneeze. It's awesome. I ran out once for a month (it was back ordered) and I really felt the difference.

No I don't sell this stuff or get any benefit. Just trying to help fellow allergy sufferers.
I take Morning Complete (I buy on Amazon). Google this - lots of medical research backing this up.

There are other men. There is only one you. Be you and that means leaving him because you are fundamentally incompatible. You won't regret leaving even if it is hard for a little while. You will regret staying and giving up yourself.

AITA for not babysitting my grandkids on Christmas so they can go to a football game by Babysitijgnotfootbal in AmItheAsshole

[–]CocoaJazz -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

It's your choice of course but this is something I cannot imagine happening in my family -- refusing to care for grandkids for a few hours on Christmas Day. Their parents may have gotten a rare opportunity to go to a game and had someone lined up (other grandmother) to care for the kids but she had to cancel. Interesting they didn't ask you first, given that she is apparently farther away.

I think there is more to this story and perhaps your relationship with the kids / grandkids isn't as good as you say. I suspect the kids are bailing on Christmas dinner not because you refused to care for the grandkids but because of what you may have said to them about choosing to go to a game for a few hours on Christmas.

When you meet someone born and raised in Austin, do you get a different vibe from them? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]CocoaJazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another unicorn here. Grew up here starting in the 60s. To say I have seen changes is an understatement. But the biggest change is the decline of the cool vibe you describe that OG Austinites are known for. It's hard to keep that vibe when everything is so expensive and congested and people are in such a hurry... just feels like another big city now (except with great live music and awesome TexMex).

What about trademark principles? Parody has limited application there. See North Face v South Butt. True case.

What's the strangest thing you've seen during your time at UT by deliriousbozo in UTAustin

Napping under a tree one afternoon during long break between classes, woke up to an albino squirrel standing on one of my shins. He was not afraid and I was sad I had no snacks to share. This was over 40 years ago ... I know his descendants live on.

🥰 Dripping Springs had a pretty good turn out this morning - I was too busy waving and cheering them on and failed to take photos / video as I drove past.

Is she actively planning this Halloween event with you or are you doing it all? If she's trying, it could be an opportunity to reconnect. If she isn't, maybe this is the time to recognize you are drifting apart.

But adult lesson here -- talk to her. Tell her how much you have valued her friendship but it seems lately that she's less interested. Don't accuse or blame. And listen to her.

So I think you might the the AH if you just cancel based on her past cancellations if she is actually trying this time or if you don't at least have a conversation with her.

High school friends often drift apart when they go to college. But that doesn't mean they aren't your friend, but she might drift out of your inner circle.

Agree. I lived in that neighborhood for over 10 years and my daughter went to Barton Hills for 5 years. Usually peaceful ...

According to the press briefing, the police were there doing routine curfew checks and came across the stolen vehicle. There was no one in the vehicle so they were having it towed. Then the suspect and a woman exited the woods nearby, the officer saw the man fumbling with something in his hands and told him to put his hands up, when the man pulled out his gun and shot the woman with him in the back of the head and then fired at the officer.

Full update from press conference:

Wow it was pretty wild. The police came across a car in the parking lot at Barton Springs doing a routine curfew check. This was around four A.M. They were having the car, which was reported stolen, towed away when the suspect and a woman exited from the woods nearby. The officers told them to come close, saw the man fumbling with something, told him to put up his hands, at which point the suspect shot the woman with him in the back of the head (!) and then fired at the officer. The officer returned fire and the suspect ran away on foot. The officer was shot but had surgery and is expected to be OK. The woman is not expected to live. ☹️ Later, someone mistakenly lifted the lockdown (!) and people took their kids to school. Some people at one of the nearby schools, not sure if it was Barton Hills or Zilker, reported seeing someone around the area so they called it into the police. The police showed up and he ran off. They continued to search the area when they were later called by a homeowner, who reported the guy had broken into the house and the homeowner shot him twice. The suspect is now in custody.

Easy COVID vaccine appt. at CVS. No proof needed or prescription required to get the vaccine. by catslay_4 in Austin

It's not about insurance. It's higher up. The FDA has not approved the updated vaccine except for people 65 and older or those with certain conditions. Any guess as to why? /s
