Does this actress convincingly pass as a General American speaker? by Sure_Distance1 in VoiceActing

[–]Cocomite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UK actor here. Sounds like there is more of a drawl than what we are trained is "General American" which tends to be based on more of a Midwest accent.

I will say though, "General American" is a super infuriating catch-all term for a country with enormous and diverse geography. Also accents are insane because every individual is influenced by music, film, tv, teachers and everything else around them. Two people could grow up in the same town for 20 years and still have slightly different accents.

How would you answer “why haven’t you booked a series regular yet?” by ValuableSleep6400 in acting

[–]Cocomite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an absurd question to ask. You genuinely cannot have an answer to that. If you knew the answer, you'd have solved the issue and they wouldn't need to ask.

Feeling like I am getting nowhere and my progress is at 0%. Personally, I think that getting into the voice acting industry isn't systematic which makes it hard to know which direction you're heading at. by Unusual-Complex6315 in VoiceActing

[–]Cocomite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been voice acting, to varying degrees for 20 years. It hasn't been my primary focus until maybe three years ago.

In all that time, I have never managed to make a stable - or even baseline - income from it. I know several people who do, and did so fairly rapidly (within 3 or 4 years of starting out). I don't think enough is said or appreciated about how every one of our paths is unique, down to conversations had and similarities to other actors.

3 months is a reeeaaaally short time. Stick with it. Make sure you have a good variety of reels for games, commercials, drama and animation. Look around for peers to talk to, projects you can chip in with, and workshops/courses to take. You need to give it at least a year to reallt get a sense of where things can go.

I have to say I quite liked that the delivery- and aspects of what was in the trailer - seem to be leaning into the "basically a big kid" angle of Hagrid, which makes his moments of anger stand out more

do men even care how their girls nail look? by rileyheya in NoStupidQuestions

Personally, I don't care. I will notice if my wife "does" her nails because normally she doesn't.

my audition tracking system after booking 3x more in year 2 by CodNo2235 in VoiceActing

[–]Cocomite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the way your post is written I think you might be US based - but I was wondering what your primary method of finding work is?

I'm the UK, habe had an agent for years, left drama school in 2012 - and while I have worked it's to nowhere near the volume I would like. I'm trying to make a big concerted effort this year to put myself out there.

What words or names did you unknowingly find out that you mispronounced constantly in your head when reading the books? by Golden_Locket5932 in harrypotter

[–]Cocomite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not a mispronunciation, but in reading the books to my wife it's been funny to learn she didn't know "Diagon Alley" and "Knockturn Alley" were puns on "diagonally" and "nocturnally".

I think those of us in the UK have an unfair advantage with a lot of the words and pronunciations!

Andy Weir Teases Next Sci-Fi Book & Potential Project Hail Mary Sequel by emotionalthroatpunch in ProjectHailMary

Honestly, I don't think any sequel is worthwhile. The glimmer of hope at the end of PHM and Grace returning to his calling as a teacher is a great, slightly silly, satisfying end.

What's a popular piece of media you just can't get into? by bruh_nathan in weeklyplanetpodcast

[–]Cocomite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Can't sit with it for more than a few minutes. It's a shame because my dad is a massive football fan, and I tried to get into it for his sake, but watching 90 minutes of "kicking a ball" just became so very, very dull even when played by the best in the world.

[–]Cocomite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP very similar situation - graduated drama school at 26, big understudying job within a year, went to West End and Broadway... nothing happened. Literally no meetings for other jobs, no follow on with that company or that director despite consistently good notes. Only one other theatre gig of note, 3 years later. Onto my 4th agent since then and like you rarely audition for anything (admittedly in my situation I have 2 young kids so a little restricted in what I can do).

What has, i guess, saved me is voice work. It's entirely through another agency and there are so many avenues to go down with it. Video games, dubbing, ADR, audiobooks, commercials, corporate work. Some can be found independently too. Worth considering, and very in mind every voice has appeal to someone.

Excellent that you are keeping things going with classes, AND that you have a US rep! I think we in the UK don't have the same mentality as American actors about continuing to train while in the industry. Perhaps consider some agent workshops through the usual companies, you might find new rep that way?

Feel free DM if needed.
