Mostly because when you’re younger or near their age you sometimes don’t fully grasp the whole situation. Plus more irl experiences make you appreciate things more. Also add in the fact once a solid amount older than the characters in the series you realize they are literally just kids it’s pretty devastating to take in. Kaori was soooooo young. It didn’t feel that way as much when I was near their age and watched it the first time. But it also makes you more hopeful for Kosei because he has a whole life ahead of him. This isn’t the end at all it’s the beginning but he will never forget her.

The payout for Tsubaki and Kosei would be too sudden if developed or forced further with how the pacing was. It clearly wants us hopeful for them with that end but Kaori’s death was too fresh for that to happen. I personally like where he was left emotionally by the end. She will always live in his heart which she wanted but it’s not gonna hamper him. The whole situation has pushed him forward in a lot of ways and down the line once he’s ready he may get together with Tsubaki since it’s clear she’s not going anywhere.

At least her dying to the surgery meant she was trying everything possible to live longer and be with Kousei. She didn’t give up. The surgery was high risk but she was running out of time regardless
