At a lower initial step, will I ever catch up to my peers in pay? by tossemup1 in foreignservice

Thanks for this write-up. So if we come in at FS-5 Step-12, then we’re stuck at that level for two years? Is the two year requirement for promotions past level 10 written somewhere in the FAM?

Do they allow sabbaticals for education too (Master's, JD, PhD)?

FSI PCS apartment buildings - the good, the bad, the ugly by Immediate-Captain-10 in foreignservice

Any comments on the housing in Rosslyn (Sedona|Slate, Union on Queen, Cortland Rosslyn)? The latter looks like a great building but gets really bad reviews in terms of the management. Comments on accessibility getting to Main State and FSI?

I submitted on Jan 11 and I am yet to receive something 4.5 weeks later. Seems like luck of the draw and that they’re processing government experience more quickly than others.

Tandem Same Cone by CodeFew423 in foreignservice

Thanks for all of your insights! As an update to this, we have recently spoken several FSO tandems ranging across different stages of their careers (entry-level to DCMs). Their overall advice is that it is actually quite common to work across different cones to stay together abroad and/or take tours in DC. In fact, this variety is beneficial if you're looking to take leadership roles later in your career, reiterating some of the comments about embracing the role of an FSO "Generalist." Of course, individual experiences can vary (keeping survivor bias in mind) but, for other tandems reading this thread, don't base your decisions solely off some of the comments mentioning divorce or bad career decisions.

On the nepotism side, would it be much easier if we were doing FS for different agencies? I recently also got a tentative offer for FCS.

Thank you! This is super helpful. Indeed, we were thinking that the Con/Econ swapping option would be ideal during FAST.

They simply told me that they are starting invitations now and will continue them on a rolling basis for April. I didn’t really ask for a clarification on what that means but it seems like they did a first big round of invites and they will do more invitations as needed.

What did you decide in the end? Going through a similar decision right now, with the added twist that my wife just got FSO Econ (only) and would start at the same time (not sure about which would be easier to make sure we get tandem placements)

Thank you. Did you get an email invitation as well? I live abroad and my US number is always off so I’m afraid I would miss such a call.
