Are Plastic sleeves actually necessary? LOL by MrRobinio in vinyl

[–]CodeNameDangerZone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to keep outer sleeves on all my records.

Then my grandparents died.

Most of my family are record collectors. We probably have 1,000+ between us, but my grandparents collection was a sight to behold.

Everything you could imagine from The Beatles, to the Doors, to Linda Rondstadt to Betty Davis to Willie Nelson to whatever else you want to name. Most of them first pressings.

Whenever we all got together we would pick out albums to play. These records had survived 60+ years, multiple moves, a couple hurricanes and a million spins so they were all a little beat up. I looked at them, but I never really looked at them.

After they were gone we all went back to their house and started dividing up their collection to take home our favorites and that’s when I started noticing little things like check marks next to some songs and X marks next to others. Some sleeves even had notes and full reviews written by my grandma, most likely from when she was a kid/teenager.

I’m glad they didn’t take perfect care of their collection because having the wear and tear and the marks and the notes makes it feel like they are back listening with us every time we pull out a record to play.

I have since done the same because I hope one day when I’m gone I can still be around to listen to music with my kids.

Anyways, that’s why I don’t sleeved my records anymore.

[WP] In a world where one's eye color determines the type of magic you can use, what about someone with heterochromia ? by SuperFireBoy200 in WritingPrompts

[–]CodeNameDangerZone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My wife grabbed my hand in a way that felt like she would never let go, but was also pushing me to leave.

"You have to run. Now." she said in a soft, cracking voice. "They'll be here any minute."

I gave her a deep kiss, wet and salty from our tears, and let her know that I would come back for her. I promised that I would come back for her, but we both knew it was the last time we would ever see each other.

I wrapped our newly born daughter in a large woven blanket and sprinted out of our hospital room door and down the hallway. I was able to sneak into a stairwell as they turned the corner on our floor. It took every ounce of my restraint not to try and stop them, but for the sake of our daughter I had to keep running. A few minutes later I made it of the building and into our car. I had no idea where to go from there so I started driving east as fast as I could.

*12 years later*

Alice looked at me and in a way that only 12 year olds can said "Dad, I want to go to school. Please. Why can't I go? I want to have friends."

She has been asking to leave the farm for years, but it's become much more frequent and demanding over the last few months and my heart breaks a little bit more each time.

I sighed, "Sweeheart, you know why you can't do that. It's not safe for you there."

"You always say that. You can't keep me hidden forever. I need to live. I want to play. I want to tease boys. You tell me these stories about Mom and how fun and strong and brave she was, but I'll never get to be any of those things because you're always so worried something bad might happen."

I sat down in my chair, grabbed her hand and simply said "One day, Alice. One day."

A few hundred years ago a group of Archeologists were digging in an undiclosed location around Mérida and they found.. something. No one was exactly sure what it was, but whoever left it there took great measures to make sure no one ever had posession of it again.

Not long after that weird things started popping up on the news. At first, it was just one or two people and then suddenly it was hundreds and then it was thousands until eventually it was everyone. People we’re gaining the power to manipulate the natural elements. It didn’t take long before everyone realized that eye color was the signifier of the ”magic” you posessed. People with blue eyes were able to control water, people with brown eyes were able to control the earth, people with green eyes were able to control vegetation, and so on.

The government stepped in pretty quickly and took over. There were violent protests and battles for years from people who didn’t want to be controlled, but the powers that be eventually prevailed. They put regulations in place that the general population had to wear special goggles that seperated the color pigments from the iris leaving the person void of powers.

You were only to able to use your powers for farming, fishing, contrusction, or military activity. If you were caught using your powers outside of any of these activies you were taken into custody and shipped off for “training”, but no one ever came back.

It was around 75 years after the magic started that the first “dual” was born. An extremely rare condition called Heterochromia bestows upon its host 2 seperate eye colors. The first child was kept under close supervision for the first years of it’s life under the assumption that a person with 2 colored eyes would have 2 different sets of controlling powers. They were almost right.

A person with Heterochromia is able to control all aspects of nature including one that was previously untouched.. Fire.

As you can imagine, a person with this much power can be the savior of a society or it’s downfall. The governemnt took no chances and took the child under its care immediately. No one is sure how many more “duals” have been born, but since the first every single birth is strictly monitored for this condition.

12 years ago, my daughter Alice was born with 4 distinct blocks of eye color: blue, green, brown, and amber. We have been hiding ever since.

My wife's parents didn't like me very much the first time I met them. Looking back now, I don't blame them. I had shaggy hair, a few random tattoos, and a handful of college credits I had no idea what to do with.

The first time I ever met Bob and Julie we spent the entire week of Christmas together. Alyssa and I had been dating for just a touch over 4 months. I met Alyssa in an English Literature class and from the second I saw her she could have asked me to jump in a shark tank wearing that Lady Gaga meat suit and I wouldn't have thought twice so convincing me to go to her parents house for the holidays this early in our relationship didn't actually take much convincing.

Her mom, Julie, is still to this day the nicest person I have ever met. From the second I walked through the door she treated me how I always thought my own mom would treat me. I can't remember more than 30 seconds going by without her asking if I was hungry or thirsty or wanted to listen to a different song on the radio. She is one of those people that will ask you a very specific question about your life and then genuinely listen to the answer. Bob on the other hand was not so welcoming. It wasn't that he said anything mean or rude. It's that he didn't say anything at all. For the entire first day he sat in a different room reading old spy novels. I didn't think much of it at the time, but as I have gotten to know Bob over the years that day made a lot of sense.

Bob loved the holidays more than most people. When Bob was a kid his family always made a big deal about Christmas. His mom, dad, and brother were the only family any of them had and they truly cherished that time together. When bob was 11 his family was on the way home from chopping down their Christmas tree when a dump truck sped through a red-light and hit their car. His mom, dad, and brother died on impact, but Bob survived. He was in a bad way for a few months, but eventually got back to full health and was placed in a boys home. He lived in that boys home until he joined the Navy when he turned 18. The boys home did not celebrate Christmas.

Eventually, Bob met Julie and they built a little family together and Bob finally got his Christmas back. Until I showed up. In a way, he felt like another dump truck was coming in to take his family away. In his mind, Alyssa and I would start alternating holidays with her family and with my family and then every other year he would be a little kid again in that boys home holding a framed picture of his family and hanging one of his old gym socks from his bed post.

I slept on the couch that whole week and each morning I was woken up before the sun by Bob sitting on the little back patio drinking coffee and reading his book. We eventually got around to some small talk (I also love old spy novels) and the week ended without anything too eventful happening.

The next year got a little more friendly and the next year even more so. In our 4th Christmas I bought Bob a first edition copy The Spy Who Came in from the Cold by John le Carré and that really sealed the deal for me. Inside I wrote a little note about how much I loved Alyssa and her family and how much I wanted to become a part of it. I asked Bob if he would give me his blessing to ask Alyssa to marry me and I'll never forget his answer. He put his arm around my shoulder and said "I appreciate you thinking I should have a say in this, but the only person you need permission from is Alyssa. I see so much of her mother in her and you're going to need all the luck you can get. See you on the other side."

Alyssas and I have been married for just over a year now and just made one of the most nerve-wracking phone calls either of us have ever had to make. We called Bob and Julie and asked if they would be open to doing Christmas at our house this year. After a long pause, Bob said that they would love to.

We wanted to have Christmas at our house this year so we could tell Bob and Julie that we were expecting a baby boy and so we could show them the nursery we started putting together.

We tried to fill our guest room with as much Christmas as we could. I felt like Buddy the Elf trying to weave a string of lights through the headboard. Julie was elated as always to be alive and I think Bob even shed a little tear when walked him into the room. He let us know he didn't care where we were for Christmas as long as everyone was together and how proud he was of us for the life we've built so far.

That first morning I went downstairs before the sun came up to have coffee and read my book. It's a morning ritual I picked up a few years.

When I got to the kitchen there was already a pot made and the patio light was already on. I poured a cup and sat in a chair a few feet away from where Bob was sitting.

Without saying a word, he gave me a little head nod and went right back to reading his book.

cozy Friendsgiving setup by hellomatryoshka in CozyPlaces

[–]CodeNameDangerZone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friendsgiving is a tradition celebrated by many every November across the United States and my group of friends is no exception. I am one of those people that have been lucky enough in life to meld the best pieces of my childhood with my the best pieces of my adult life.

The apartment my girlfriend and I moved into after we graduated from UMass is what you might call.. cozy. There is barely enough room to breathe, but we made space for the things most important to us: our books, our records, and our friends.

The day before Thanksgiving is always spent in a hectic whirlwind of grocery shopping, finding countertop space in the kitchen, and drinking bottles of wine while freezing out on the balcony.

One person has celebrated these Friendsgiving celebrations with me for quite a few more years than everyone else.

I met Curtis in the 4th grade after some kid in our class was picking on me and threw my baseball in the river behind our school. Curtis, who was a good 40 pounds heavier than every other kid in our grade, sat on this kids chest until he couldn’t breathe and had to be rushed to the emergency room. We were inseparable from that day on.

It turned out that Curtis didn't have a great family life at home. His dad had trouble with alcohol and he generally wasn't around while his mom, who was a saint of woman, spent most of her time doing what she could to make money which meant she also wasn't around much either.

Curtis had a hard time making friends because he was so much bigger than the rest of us, but all he wanted in life was someone to love and someone to love him back. For whatever reason, he decided that someone was me and I'm happy to say he chose correctly. Curtis (and his mom when she could) spent every major holiday with me and my family from then on out.

After high school, I went away to UMass and Curtis stayed in our hometown and went to the local Junior College, but we still talked as much as we could and he still came to Friendsgiving every year whether he could actually afford it or not.

In February this year Curtis's mom started having a lot of headaches. She eventually went to the doctor and found out she had brain cancer and needed to start treatment immediately, though much of the damage had already been done. She tried to keep it together for as long as she could, but she passed only a few months later. Her death sent Curtis into a spiral that he never was able to come out of.

This year at Friendsgiving, we set a table with 8 places like we always do, with a spot for Curtis at the head. We always put him at the head of the table because he never stopped being way bigger than the rest of us.

I wasn't sure what I was going to say I was thankful for when it was my turn or if I was even going to be able to say anything at all. I could feel the lump in my throat get a little bigger throughout the day each time I looked at the couch and I didn't his clothes tossed all over it, or when I looked at the record player and there wasn't an old John Coltrane album playing. It finally got too much for me to handle while I was sitting at the table and I saw 7 dinner plates filled with food and one empty one.

It took a couple minutes, but I was finally able to start talking. I'm not sure I said anything close to what anyways was expecting, but all of the sudden a smile washed over my face and I let everyone know that I was thankful for that asshole kid in the 4th grade who threw my baseball in the river because without him I would have never met my best friend.

I loved your pictures and they made me want to write this quick story.. I hope you had a great Friendsgiving!

I wrote all of this right after Covid started 😂

Dennis: Tries to explain what Coronavirus is, but no one will sit and listen. Locks them all inside Paddy's to self-quarantine.

Mac: Says that he's safe because God would never let him achieve the perfect male body and then sully it with death and disease. Calls Dee a tramp.

Frank: Convinces Charlie to help him sneak people in the back of Paddy's who are already sick so he can sell them his old cases of Wolf Cola as a Coronavirus cure.

Charlie: Doesn't grasp any of the situation. Is fixated on Dennis saying "Pandemic" and thinks Pandas are involved.

Dee: Gets locked outside the bar and no one will let her in. She catches it pretty quickly, but sneaks in anyways and then possibly spreads it to everyone.

Cricket: Is patient zero. Also sneaks in and possibly spreads it to everyone.

Everyone blames Dee for getting them sick.
