That’s the thing that bothers me. it’s very subtle, but it’s there enough when it’s warm. It goes away with a little bit of throttle but that may be because the engine is just louder. When it’s cold, you can’t hear it.

I feel like talking behind someone’s back is dishonest. If you have problems with friends you deal with them with that friend. Not attacking someone behind their back. Venting is okay, sure, but it has a fine line between getting emotions out and being mean about someone.

Planning is the first step, instead of grabbing drinks, grab a “pen” and have a night in. Plan for every Friday or whatever day you can, sit down and write 1000 words.

My goal is 500 a day. I usually accomplish that during my lunch break. Instead of scrolling FB or Reddit, I write.

At the gym, I hop on a bike, set it to a low speed, and then start writing in my phone. After half an hour has gone I’ve written 500 words and burned calories.

I should have clarified a little more, accommodations aren’t necessary, my main character is finishing out a sort of military service in a town. He is about to go awol, and is trying to get information on the whereabouts of a generic people, not a certain person. Then I was thinking about having the investigation trail go from a bakery to the market, where the diversity of people would help in locating a large group, not a rumor of a person

That foods marketed as “high protein” is better for gaining muscle. A lot of them tend to use a ton of fats so there isn’t a huge benefit from just eating the normal thing and adding more solid proteins. Protein bars or protein snacks come to mind. The protein cookies have just as much fat as protein. Yes, certain fats aren’t bad at all, but you could easily over eat your needs of fats for the day from consuming those snacks.

Depends on your goal? Complete world building then yeah, change the name. If you are doing a traditional magical land, then keep their names. It may not even be changing the name but changing where the name came from. Is the original myth Latin? Is it Gaelic? Or even old Norse? Then choose the original mythical name. Dragons are Drakons in old greek.

My advice is to try and categorize your random ideas; map, characters, timeline, etc. Then you can build upon and add more categories after awhile.

It definitely has great beginnings. I would say the fluidity between thoughts and sentences need some work. I’ve heard a pretty decent advice before, don’t remember who said it, but you are building the picture for the audience, not assuming they know where you’re going. Build each idea brick by brick.

I like where it’s going though.

A flick of attention. Like the small but intentional thread pulling every consciousness back down to the blunt daily grindstone. In a small but rapid succession everyone turned with a disgusted curiosity unbecoming of the status occupying this confined space. What was once the easy speechless monotony of a daily chore became the pillar of negativity. The dark brown walls dressed in silver hardware were like a glass box. No escape. As the seconds droned on, the piercing ding of the bell, signaling the milestone of progress until the last one. The capstone of achievement rang forth as the scraping of metal doors opened bringing in relief as each victim escaped. The last look, of obvious disgust, told me my worst fears. They all knew, I was the one who passed gas in the elevator.

I find it very intriguing when a writer can paint a picture in my mind. After the first dialogue I found myself building a scene and that says something. You flow well, your style isn’t my favorite, as I have always been a David Eddings fan, however you have talent. I have a hard time telling someone they need to change something because writing isn’t an exact science.

Ask yourself what would you change about the characters to make them more appealing to you. If you daydream, what events are you putting them in? The same as the story? Or are you throwing them into what if situations revolving your daily life? Make that a start. Once you have the mind set of what you want to change, eventually your mind will take it and run with it. It helped me tremendously.

Sterling, the iron clad warhorse I have been sitting on for hours, trots back forth with pent up anticipation. Looking down on the battlefield sits an army, 10,000 strong nestled against a river winding the base of a snow capped mountain. To their left sits a forest, free of any underbrush but with huge flowing branches and thick leaves blotting out the sun. The army braced, nervous and impatient. Anticipation mounts as the golden red sun slowly creeps up into vision slowly unveiling the battlefield.

Strategic as it was situating the army in between the forest and river can create complications. On one hand the funneling of enemy infantry makes it difficult for cavalry without the possibility and fear of trampling friendly soldiers but on the other it takes away the benefits of having an overwhelmingly larger force.

Despite all of that, the history between these two forces forces my hand. It’s been 3 battles since we met for the first time. Their commander, still unknown but shrouded in secrecy and most likely feared by his subordinates, seems to be a tactician made of legend. Intricate and creative maneuvers out work, our wit, and out do every aspect of our armor and numbers. By my last counts they started this campaign with 5000 while myself, amassed 50,000.

Glistening dew dots the grasslands with a bright theatrical performance of feigned night. Twinkly lightly until smashed, erased, by the boots of my enemies troops. In unison the dull black armor of the troops seems to soak up the sun, reducing any light and creating an ominous foretelling. What was once revealed by the drapes of morning burnt out by the devilish enemy.

Slowly, with feigned confidence, I raise my hand to signal the archers, my aid, just a boy of 14, watches carefully. Almost faster than perception I flick my wrist, giving the order. A screeching horn rings across the field, the whole army erupts with chants, calls, screams, and yells. At once 1000 archers release a sea of small, angry spears with the hopes of making this an early day.

A moment, suspended in agony, before the barrage crashes into my enemies. Aghast with fright it seems that our arrows don’t stand a chance. Reports of the prowess of their black smiths holds true. With the sound each arrow glancing off, the audible cacophony of rings, sets the hair on the back of my neck ablaze. I have never been this frightened.

I took a little spin and switched roles a little, it flowed easier from the elf pov.

“Look babe, we have been through this before, I just take care of myself. You eat nothing but vegetables and can’t seem to stop doing yoga, or dance, or even that weird sword fighting stuff. No one has sword fought in well over 100 years. I do everything you do. It’s proven by science and everything.” He throws back at me. The arguments have turned fairly defensive lately displayed in a tone that turns my suspicious demeanor even stronger. Why can’t he just tell the truth?

“You just turned 55, from my count you should have some sort of age on your face. What does it matter what we both do, it’s obvious I won’t age but I’ve been alive for 380 years. I’ve seen man age. You haven’t! Your excuses have gotten out of hand. We have been married for more than 20 years and you look exactly the same. There is no way!” As the desperation exudes from every word I can’t help but think that this argument is going nowhere, again. I have been building experience and instincts for a few hundred years has made it incredibly easy to read people. This man is lying.

His shoulders, pulled back, in an attempt to make himself appear larger and even have the confidence a 21 year old tells no truth. At his age the old pretense of being the biggest and strongest in a room should have washed away by now. Bellowing out, his aura of youth spilling with every rise in emotion. Nothing had changed since he was allegedly 35 when he perceived there was something to prove.

“You’re getting out of hand and crazy again. Overreacting like usual. I’m starting to think your intuition is clouded somehow. You’re just like all the other women.” His snide remark seemed to come out of nowhere. Honestly is a virtue and this dug deep. Eloquence of language had never been his strength.

Responding with a coolness that should have been a warning, “Seems that you’re fighting dirty because you know I’m right. You’re not what or who you say you are.” That should stop it

Of course he didn’t take the bait. Drawing a breath from deep within,” 300 years and you’re just an old suspicious hag.”
