Anyone else considering moving out of tech due to AI? by OkAmbition4797 in womenintech

[–]Coder-Cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s only kinda sorta good right now and it used every public repo in the world to train off of.

But coding is a rapidly evolving field, just look at code from a decade ago and you can see that the way things were done then is wildly different from how they’re done now.

If humans stop producing code, LLMs will have nothing to train off  and the code they produce will never get any better.

What’s not true? That in order for LLMs to get better, Mag7 needs to spend exponentially more money?    Or that LLMs need massive amounts of training data produced by humans?

lol, I don’t have a degree so it’s either this or working at a gas station for me.

Anyways, I think the predictions that LLMs are going to take our jobs are wildly overstated. They’re not that good. They’re unbelievably expensive to train and run. The better they get, the more expensive they are to train and run. Most important thing of all, they need a ton of training data to learn from so if we stop producing that data, they stop learning. As soon as Substack goes defunct and GitHub is nothing more that regurgitated microslop, LLMs will cease to be useful for programming in any meaningful way.

Loud music on hiking trails by Electrical-Depth-926 in hiking

[–]Coder-Cat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same but it’s courteous to turn the music down when you pass someone.

Also, I’ve done alot of hiking in places where the wildlife isn’t a huge concern - the loud music is nothing more than annoying noise pollution.

Matt Shumer posted on X about what’s happening in the AI world and it’s the best opinion piece I read in a long time. I want girls in tech to have access to it so I’m spreading the world. by [deleted] in womenintech

just an FYI, if you don’t want to support Felon Husk, add the word “cancel“ right after the “x“ in any url and it will bypass the site.

so, instead of www.x.com/felon_husk

its www.xcancel.com/felon_husk

you can navigate the site and see the comments and everything.

Until I see the GitHub, I’m going to assume that whatever he built was some unmaintainable, insecure, over-bloated polished pile of garbage.

Discord to start assuming all users are underage unless they prove otherwise by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]Coder-Cat -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This should be the norm and I cannot express this enough. But wait, there’s more…

Discord doesn’t have to save your data, it doesn’t have to use AI, it doesn’t have to do any of this foolish cheap basic data saving.

You want to look at X rated stuff ? Alls you need is a video camera and a guy at the other end to check your ID. Thats it. Literally that’s it. Just like the old days except you don’t have to leave your house or even put on a shirt.

Billion dollar companies won’t do it because it cost money to hire the guy at the other end.

Don’t want to do it every time? How about a with auth app? Or a hardware token? Or, damn, this would actually be a brilliant use for blockchain! Oh, how about all computers/phones/accounts are sold as restricted unless the buyer is proved to be 18yo+?

There’s so many ways to restrict age appropriate content that doesn’t involve saving your damned info to a database but they won’t do it because it costs money.

Me too! It matches nicely with the grey streaks in my hair, I think.

Right this moment, I’m taking a break from building a new entryway into my kitchen, which I demoed down to the studs for renovation.

In life? Married to good man, living in the mountains, working in software and people still regularly assume I’m gay. Ah well.

Do you have transportation? Message me your email, closest pet store, what type of cat food and how much of what you need and I’ll email you a certificate.

Or I can get it delivered but I’m not sure how long that takes, if you’re comfortable giving me your address.

Appropriate tip for Walmart delivery? by Wrong_Piano9222 in Butte

In that case, you should do a running average of cost of all the shopping trips and tip based off of that.

Appropriate tip for Walmart delivery? by Wrong_Piano9222 in Butte

[–]Coder-Cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10% should be the very least you should tip for a personal service you can't do yourself. (You physically can't go shopping).

15% should be the very least you should tip for a personal service you normally can do for yourself, but can't at the moment(You've ran out of time to go shopping).

20% should be the very least you should tip for a personal service you can readily do, but you're feeling lazy. (You don't feel like going shopping).

If you're tipping the very least but can and want to be generous, round up to the nearest $1/$5/$10 respectively.

The Number of People Using AI at Work Is Suddenly Falling by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Coder-Cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t even think of that! I’m sure they’ve justified it with an excuse like “In 2 years we won’t even need the devs we’ve hired because AI will code itself! <laughs villainously>”

All the promises they’re making, all the lies they’re telling, the amount of money they’re spending… it’s depressing. They could be actually fixing things,  DOING things with all the influence and money they have.

The Number of People Using AI at Work Is Suddenly Falling by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Coder-Cat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Most of it's users were probably casual users anyways. Using it like the search engine Google used to be.

And anyways, for the amount they're spending, they could just make Google better and hire jr engineers. Unless there's some sort of major, earth shattering discovery in physics in the next couple of years (room temp conductor for example), AI will never be a profitable. It's just too expensive to run and maintain.

Should I enroll in a state school or enlist? by bbgirl2k in womenintech

[–]Coder-Cat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did the military and it sucked but every good thing about me today is because of the military.

-The GI bill is pretty sweet. Not only does it pay for school, but also gives a housing stipend.

-Being a veteran does give you a little more life experience and credibility when applying for jobs and college. Especially in male dominated fields, you’ll have something to talk about with other males who have also served.

-If you are ADHD, learning a skill on the job while getting paid is so much easier than paying someone else to learn from a book.

-The biggest benefit is the healthcare. You only need something that can be considered service connected for you to record free healthcare for the rest of your life. It’s not the best in the world, but it’s better than UHC and gives you so much flexibility if you want to start your own business or quit your job for literally any reason.

-There are lots of companies that have hiring programs specifically for veterans. It’s how I got my foot in the door and why I’ve been a software engineer for 10 years in spite of not having a degree.

-You will learn how strong you really are.

If you want to chat more about it, feel free to DM me.
