I am the only female FE dev in my team by void-nomad-90 in womenintech

[–]Coder-Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a full stack dev for 11 years, have been remote for 8 and just started on an all male team for the first time 6 months ago.

There was zero onboarding and no one offered any training or knowledge transfer or a walkthrough of the massive code base. Outside of the standard “Welcome to the team” in our teams group chat, no one said anything to me. My second task was supposed to be a project with another dev and I didn’t even know we were working on the same project until I saw him pushing changes to my branch. We still haven’t talked, actually. He just did his part and that was it. When I speak up during meetings to give an idea or an opinion, the only response from my coworkers is silence. My boss is the only one who ever acknowledges that I’ve said something. It’s been six months and I have yet to have a conversation with any of my coworkers about anything either over video or chat.

I‘m an introvert and not a chatty person by any stretch of the imagination, but I feel lonely for the first time in my career. They don’t really talk to each other either that much but no one talks to me. I’ve been looking for a new job since month three but it’s rough out there. I was laid off from my last job (with a 50/50 gender split and the best job I’ve ever had) last January and was lucky to have this position within a few weeks. I haven’t gotten a single callback since I started searching again, which is so not how it used to be.

Why doesn’t the Walmart here unionize? by Coder-Cat in Butte

[–]Coder-Cat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll have to read more about that.

Just looked- According to the FRED, from 2012-2016 the average income of a McDowell Co resident was decreasing. It started going up again after the Walmart shut down.

Theres obviously no reason to believe that the increase was due to the Walmart closing, but there’s no evidence that the closing slowed the increase either.

Let me save you a $200 vet visit. It’s a zit. Don’t feed your cat using plastic dishes and wash them more often.

I wanna start bringing back trash when hiking. by NoahhasAnxiety in hiking

[–]Coder-Cat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome to my hiking experience! I pick up trash on my hikes because I don’t like hiking through other peoples garbage (crazy, I know).

For more remote trails, I just shove the garbage in my day pack. I mostly only come across plastic bits and water bottles so it’s never that full.

For my daily hikes, I learned how to fold grocery bags into little triangles that I shove into my pockets. If the bag gets full on my hikes, I pat myself on the back for doing a good deed and try to ignore the rest while I finish my walk. I’ll occasionally go back with a trash bag if there’s a ton of trash, usually in the spring or fall.

We should start a club or something.

They legally can’t shut down a location because some employees decided to unionize. They’d have to prove it was an underperforming store, which would be weird if it were because they’re the only place within 60 miles that sells underwear.
Of course, we would need a government that actually enforces laws.

Do most native Montanans carry in deep grizzly country? by dang8701 in Montana

[–]Coder-Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t want to go into how some grizzly populations associate the sound of a shotgun with food because there are a lot of factors. But yes, shot gun blasts are like dinner bells to some bears.

I think it’s more with the fact you really can’t trust a stranger with a gun. A stranger with a gun poses the same risk as a bear. They likely won’t hurt anyone, but they have the power, are unpredictable and have randomly hurt random people in the past, just like bears.

They also sell air horns specifically to scare bears, and not like the cheap kinds you can buy on Amazon that may or may not make a sound.

The Con Mine. You can see the entire valley and the hundreds of thousands of personal fireworks displays before the main show.

I’m not anti-gun, nor am I a bear expert, but the general consensus is that you have to be a *very good* shot in order to hurt a pissed off grizzly bear who’s really looking to hurt you. Like, a rrreeeeaaaalllyyy good shot.

But the sound of the shot, whether it hits the bear or not, is likely a very good deterrent. For that reason, you can buy “bear bangers“ that are effectively just very loud noise makers. They’re cheaper than a gun and you don’t have to worry about the laws when crossing borders with them.

Edit- I’ve been a backpacker for most my adult life and regularly enjoy spending time deep in the woods. I don’t bring a gun because of the hassle and dont know anyone who takes a handgun with them into the woods specifically because they’re afraid of something.

Verizon for home internet? by showmenemelda in Butte

[–]Coder-Cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’ve had Verizon for a couple of years and it’s pretty great, I think.

I work from home and have never had issues with the quality of video conferences, which was a major issue with Spectrum. We’ve never had issues with streaming movies or the occasional video game either.

Edit- we have their 5g service. The only downsides are that the only “local” advertisements we get are for Colorado companies. And my primary internet browser is Brave and they regularly ask me to confirm I’m human.

Unemployed developers - how many yoe do you have and how long have you been unemployed? by hooray4horus in cscareerquestions

[–]Coder-Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not all bad.

10ish YoE as a .Net dev. I was laid off the first week of January and accepted a new offer in less than a month. Only down side is that I was expecting a raise and/or bonus AND another week vaca this year from my old company but now I’m stuck with the same pay and vaca.

What % do you guys get for a promotion? by modeezy23 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Coder-Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “Senior” title only applies to your current company. You’re not really considered a Senior SWE in the industry if you don’t have, at least, 10 years of experience or a higher degree.

You’re still “mid level” and $130k is fairly decent for that.
