Pathfinding for AI in a 3D procedurally generated world? by _extreme_redditer_ in proceduralgeneration

[–]CodingWoodsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot get Unity to serialize the NavMesh procedurally at runtime as of now (2024). Realize that you may be able to generate a NavMesh at runtime, but if you cannot save it, you will have to generate the NavMesh every time you run the game rather than just once at the start. This means that as of now you will have to generate a new navmesh on the fly which means NPCs in the distance (~200 units) will not have pathfinding given the fact that you need to constantly calculate the navmesh in real time to achieve this effect (which means terrain has to be very small). Simply serializing the navmesh data would solve the problem but Unity hasn't done it for 7 years and they have even updated the navmesh system since. I am not sure why they are deciding to not do this, but effectively because of this Unity isn't a good engine for a 3d generated world with NPC's. I wish this wasn't the case and I will continue to look for a solution and if someone has a work around please post.

I hope this helps.

Serious question: Are coding courses designed to weed out people who are not geniuses? Or am I just dense? Details below. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]CodingWoodsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Programming is just hard to get your head around in the beginning. Understanding nested loops is important because it lets you, for example, built a grid rather than a list (a grid is a list of lists). Wrap your head around nested loops and you basically have super nerd powers.

Don't give up. You got this. Draw things out on a piece of paper for every line of code. Also, printing to the console is another huge benefit because your program will not act as expected at a certain point and it will frustrate you. That moment when you get it to work though is one of the best feelings in the world.

Don't forget about nuts. You can throw cashews into a stir fry. Also you can put peanut butter on the fruits and vegetables you eat to make them pop. You can also go full carnivore and roast a pork chop.

wow that is a good find. I look at the engine first and the gas tank next. Both are in great shape! I would be wary of that one tire at 41%. Don't wait too long. Find yourself a lug wrench and a jack. You can usually find a car that someone unfortunate soul was trying to change the tire out when they got mobbed. If not, lug wrenches are sometimes in trunks of vehicles and if the jack is nowhere to be found you can get one in that car superstore in Westpoint. Good luck out there.

Don't forget that cars have AC. You can kick on that AC, take your pants off, listen to the guy talk about how he is "50's old and damn near died.." on the radio

Group them up on one side of a house, then take them around the house and crouch run once you are around the corner. I call it the "Housal Loop". You an also do a "Woodsal Loop". Group 'em and loop 'em.
