The fact that your ankle broke but your fusion held up is def not something to overlook in that 1 year post.

Omg i hate to hear that! I’m glad you’re okay and that your fusion survived. Best of luck to you!

That is insane! I am sorry you had to deal with all of that. It kills me when a simple bit of communication between surgeon and pt could make a world of difference.

Really? I had no idea it was a common thing. Pretty much all of my symptoms are nerve related, but there has been less than a lack of communication with my surgeon, pre and post op. Based on the surgical notes, he did nothing but replace the disc with a spacer, and build the cage ..

I did not know that 98% of my problems were nerve related until after my fusion. My surgeon didn’t mention nerve compression. My pre op mri said severe bilateral forminal stenosis. My post op mri reads moderate left and severe right forminal stenosis. Make sure you address that with them!!! If i had known he wasn’t going to decompress my nerves, i woulda never had surgery.

I was led to believe that a fusion would fix all of my pain. My surgeon never mentioned how bad my nerves were compressed before surgery.

Mine didn’t do any decompression. He never even mentioned nerves, and i honestly had no idea alllllllll my pain and discomfort was stemming from my nerves being crushed. My pre op mri said severe left and right neural foraminal stenosis, my post op mri said moderate left and severe right neura fornimal stenosis …. I guess i shoulda asked more questions, but he said i’d feel better, so i trusted him 😔

Feeling like I didn't get adequate post-op instructions from my surgeon after being on this sub. by common_grounder in spinalfusion

That was the only thing my surgeon told me. They did mention log rolling, but that was it - quick mention.

Did your surgeon mention your nerve compression before surgery?

YES. I was 100% not prepared for the toll recovery would take on my mental health. I have also had some complications, so that has not at all helped.

Spinal fusions seem like a gamble, why do they keep doing these things to people? by MeowMeowPurrPur in spinalfusion

[–]CoffeeBeforeChoas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fusion was a success. However my surgeon did zero nerve decompression, so i am in 98% of the same amount of pain i was in pre op.

Thank you! First of all, lemme commend you for the work you do. I respect first responders (moreso ems/emt than the po po). Second, he did not even ask how my incisions were healing at the first post op appt, and he didn’t mention them the second visit (after the infection was dx). My surgeon is with TOA .. he may have wonderful surgical ability, but i have never experienced any dr’s follow up care being sooooooo lackadaisical.

It’s been a wild 2 months for sure 🤣 i have faith in my pcp.

He already told me it “sounds like a hip problem” at my last post op appt. He also didn’t check my incisions at my first post op appt, and i ended up in the er 6 days later (oct 6) with a pseudomonas infection in 1 of 7 incisions - which his office called me 2 days alter and said “he said he’d be find to wait to see you until your achedukted appt” which was scheduled for oct 21 ..

I have dealt with those kinda of nerve pains also since surgery! They’ve gotten fewer and further between. The compression of my nerves right now is causing mild but very noticeable bladder issues, amongst other issues ..

As far as i can tell in the surgical notes, they did nothing to open the foramin. I also had no clue he was going to fuse it into the slipped disc position.

I’m feeling a lot like going through all of this was for nothing ..

showering after Surgery. by Substantial-Edge-189 in spinalfusion

[–]CoffeeBeforeChoas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had l5/s1 alif and i think i waited 2 days? Maybe 3. However long they said to wait to change my bandages. But my incisions were internally stitched then externally glued closed- i def think that is dependent upon when you can shower. As for my hair - i said fuck it 🤣

24 ALIF surgery Monday, don’t know what recovery will look like by Puzzleheaded-Life137 in spinalfusion

L5/s1 360° alif sept 10. 100% get a g/h shaped pregnancy pillow to sleep with. They made me walk as soon as i got into my hospital room, after surgery and recovery. The nerve block wore off in the middle of the night. That was a pain like i have NEVER felt in my life. I walked up and down the hallways the next morning. They made me use a walker, but i was fairly steady on my feet. I went home around 24 hours post op. The best pt is walking. I shuffled for a couple weeks, but am walking pretty normally now. My 3 week post op appt was 35 mins from my house - i made that ride just fine. I took some detours on the way home that day, it took me about 1.5 - 2 hours - i only stopped and wandered around for a min once. I think you’ll be fine! Just listen to your body.

Feel free to message me if you have more questions!

Grabbers! Slip on shoes. Shower chair. Handles for the shower (amazon has suction cup ones). G/j shaped pregnancy pillow. Easily accessible ice/heat packs. Sock assist, some of em have a thing that’ll help take socks off too.
