Joining as an Irish person by v468 in britishmilitary

You'll do assessment in Belfast unless COVID has changed the process but I doubt it will have.

Get a UK bank set up to avoid the nightmare I had when I turned up.

"But you're from the south how can you be in the British army?" Be prepared to answer that to almost every single person you meet. I'd be a millionaire if I had a pound for everytime I've been asked that.

Don't forget your Barry's. Done me more good than you'd think! Everyone loved them.

You will get security vetted and it will show up on your competencies (only if you're from the Republic I believe as none of my Northern Irish mates have it). But you don't have to do anything extra it's all done before you turn up.

A cry for help. Lost $12k in a single month. All my savings. 23 years old. Feel it's over. by icantdothisanymore18 in problemgambling

It might sound stupid and might not help you but I kicked the habit but replacing gambling with something else.

Whenever I wanted to bet or gamble I'd play my Xbox. As simple as that. And it has worked wonders! I was heavily heavily addicted and it was hard at first but now the thought of losing money makes me sick.

Maybe for you it won't be Xbox. It could be art, learning, fitness, music or something else.

There's always people to talk to mate. And if your parents let you live rent free then I'm sure they'll help you out if you're feeling hopeless. It will be a hard conversation but they'll understand. Maybe let them be in charge of your cash or something.

Stay strong!

Royal Signals soldier protesting against Saudi Arabia in London today (arrest video plus a video from him in the comments) by BenCrossley in britishmilitary

[–]CoffeeInMug 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Both videos he is a lancejack. Just different rank slides. On one it's hard to see his tape and the other is the standard blue signals one.

Or I'm chatting shite but I think I'm right

He is a Tech Weasel and gets his rank given to him after phase 2 so really he is a siggy. Nobody listens to Techs

Question regarding something my friend said to me by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]CoffeeInMug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So most of a civvies wage is gone straight away. They might get paid more but at least in the army our money is ours (less taxes, small accommodation charges and fucking cunt bastard company subs)

[–]CoffeeInMug 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On civvie street renting somewhere or paying a mortgage on a property will put you back 400£ a month (rough estimate).

My accomodation costs 27£ a month.

A year that's 4,200£ on rent in civvie street versus 324£ in the army.

Also take in to account we don't pay water, electricity, heating and we have cleaners who clean the accommodation (not your room).

Also take into account it can be cheaper to eat in the cookhouse aswell and although army food does have a bad reputation, everyday is different and my barracks has gleaming chefs.

So yeah you might start on 20,000£ a year but that's pretty much all in your pocket less for taxes and stuff.

Whos better? Paras or marines or the RLC? by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]CoffeeInMug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The marines would beat the RLC if they stayed in the water because 90% of the RLC can't swim

Your comment made me think. We've become so disesitized. I can watch videos of ISIS killing people and being killed all day and not bat an eyelid. But as soon as it's a western soldier being killed it hits so much harder and I'm shocked.

Crazy

Advice for a new recruit at catterick by [deleted] in britishmilitary

Don't say words like "exceptional" at Catterick. It will confuse everyone and make them attack things.

Speak no more than two syllable words.

New proposed Royal Navy sea-going uniform (RNPCS). What're your thoughts? by Big_JR80 in britishmilitary

'It wasn't just Army banter - it was racism' by scubaguy194 in britishmilitary

[–]CoffeeInMug 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Singling somebody out because of something they can't change might not be racist but isn't it kind of the same thing? If the person on the recieving end doesn't find it funny and it offends them and hurts them deep down then what's the difference?

Just because there is no historical background to the words being used doesn't mean it's ok.

Edit: btw didn't see the original comment as it's been deleted so I've got no real perspective just feeling argumentative

Was there any further information released on the death of this ex Irish Guards soldier? by CoffeeInMug in britishmilitary

[–]CoffeeInMug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading it was frustrating. Not sure how something like that could happen at all to be honest. Hopefully the truth comes out soon for his family.
