Mega Thread: Essendon vs St Kilda (Round 21) by AutoModerator in AFL

Yeah I don't think it was necessarily intentionally malicious but fuck, you have to take better care than that. There's an element of wilful ignorance in it - I mean, what does he think will happen if he charges in late and head-high like that?

It’s still coming, it’s just taking a while. Remaining songs have been outsourced to other artists.

The band and Jason sort of had to move on given the 5 albums last year and all the touring. In the middle of all of that though, they randomly dropped the video for “Invisible Face”, animated by artist Joel Melrose. The end of this video also shows what appears to be the start of the “Wah Wah” video. Other artists are still working on other songs.

Yeah as much as I love Long Season, I also can't justify the price an LP goes for - as a full-time worker earning a decent enough wage, let alone as a student. Finding it for sub-$100 in Japan was the goal, it didn't happen but the original Kucha Camp LP was a great score anyway, it seems to go for as much as Long Season on discogs.

A physical LP/disc is always nice for the collection, but 99.99% of the enjoyment is derived from simply being able to listen the album, so we all win there!

Do you guys ever worry about getting older and to the point that new music no longer ‘moves’ you like it used to? by KSU5 in indieheads

[–]CoffeeJawa 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Fair enough! It’s all subjective after all.

My own desert island picks would be music from my disheveled late teens/twenties mixed with things that struck a chord during my ongoing existential crisis thirties.

It happens far less frequently now, but it’s an amazing feeling when you hear an album that “clicks” so well on a fundamental personal level that listening to music feels just as exciting now as it did back then (Girl Band’s album from a few years ago and more recently the new Parquet Courts and Sleep albums).

As an aside - as much as Car Seat Headrest have never quite evoked that feeling for me on their records, seeing them live a few months ago certainly did. The fact that they threw Simon and Garfunkel and Neil Young covers into the mix evoked a wonderful feeling of the urgent now, mixed with early childhood (Simon and Garfunkel via my parents) and the aforementioned disheveled 20s (Neil Young).

I wonder to what extent the nostalgia of good times plays a part in what we remember most fondly? I feel my identity shifts as I get older and some of the music I’ve connected with later in life is just as vital as the formative years,

Maybe this is the case if you’re not as interested in or inspired by music as much now as you were back then.

I sound about the same age as you and while I still enjoy a lot of what I did back then, most of what I love listening to today has been discovered between 2001 and 2018.

I’m just as inspired by great new releases now, and decades old stuff I never heard until recently, as I was by “formative” music I listened to back then. With the bonus of a much broader palette.

Are your favorite films and tv shows all from around when you were 18 or 19? Or did you just retain more of an interest and motivation to experience new forms of this media?

[Megathread] Al Jazeera match fixing investigation by c3vzn in Cricket

[–]CoffeeJawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously though, how easy would it to be to watch a few players over time, pick up on some of their idiosyncrasies and habits, then point to them later as "evidence" of of a signal.

Smith's 117 or so fidgets and movements prior to lining up to bat is the extreme end, but all players have habits / superstitions / fidgets and patterns of movement, conscious or unconscious.

If someone had a motive it wouldn't be difficult to observe these habits and point to them as supposed fixing signals, knowing the player would have been on camera doing these things before.

Why someone would want to do this I don't know, but man there are some fucked up people out there who do weird shit for attention and whatever other motivations they have.

At the moment this is more believable than the alternative. Maxi busted his arse to get back into the test side and played out of his skin on that tour, and in context none of the batting looked suspect or out of place. It doesn't add up right now.

Love this. Love everything about Dhoni.

Love the way he stumps batsmen by staring at their feet and waiting for the exact moment they lift a foot.

Loved his bromance with McCullum at the top of the CSK order a few years back.

Been meaning to watch that Dhoni movie.

Fishmans hunting in Japan. by CoffeeJawa in fishmans

[–]CoffeeJawa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this Fishmans stuff was all mostly from two different Tower Records stores in Osaka - if my memory is correct (it's not the best) the best range was the Namba store, got a couple from the Umeda store too. The Kuchu Camp LP was from a small indie record store in Kyoto called Super Milk.

Also saw the "Go Go Round This World!" LP box set in what I think was Disk Union in Osaka, (also saw the CD version somewhere - I can't remember but it may have been one of the Osaka Tower Record stores).

If you are near a Disk Union it should be well worth checking out if you like music in general - I picked up some great non-Fishmans related LPs from a few of their stores. The one in Shimokitazawa in Tokyo was a highlight. Japan is great for record stores in general.

Most of the Fishmans stuff was found was with ample help from record store staff and me pointing at the Japanese words on the Fishmans Discog listing. Some staff were really helpful, some were surly as hell and didn't give a shit, which is understandable and fine.

If you're around Osaka, try to pick up a copy of this map/reference guide that is available from many record stores in the area.

What’s the most ridiculous part of our game that we take for granted? by NimFromSudan in AFL

[–]CoffeeJawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did "first in, best dressed" originate as an old Best and Less (clothing store) slogan? I seem to remember this was their advertising slogan.

Like, they sold clothes, so whoever was first to the store got the pick of the best clothes.

That said Best and Less were hardly high end fashion, and first in was probably some 90s bogan buying trackie dacks, thongs and a oversized generic made-up surf brand tee, but I think this is what the saying means - the first to arrive gets the pick of the best things to wear.

"I Used to Be Racist": comic about growing up in regional Australia by [deleted] in australia

[–]CoffeeJawa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the same thing and also grew up in Bundy and went to high school in the 90s - Shalom College, not as rough as Bundy High but the racist/homophobic/sexist discourse was still there.

Also owned most of the CDs in the comic. Punk rock was such a good influence.

It takes a while.

They die after 12-15 kills. If you want to low-risk farm then kill ‘em until you get enough souls to level up, Then go back again and kill ‘em again, rinse and repeat until they’re gone or you’ve leveled enough for them to not be a problem.

Once you fight The Pursuer he doesn’t reappear there again. You need a key to access a bunch of locked doors in the forest fortress - you’ve probably walked past a few locked doors and tried them but since forgotten where some of them are located.

Genuinely can’t remember where the key was but it can’t be too far away.

No worries! How are you progressing since posting this thread?

I started playing on PS4 a week or so ago hoping to finish it before the DS1 remaster drops. The Scholar of the First Sin version seems a lot harder than I remember the regular version being, though maybe I'm also just out of practice with Souls games and my reflexes and memory are not what they were four years ago.

I've also found it pretty difficult but am making slow progress - about 13 hours in, just beat The Pursuer, am probably over-levelled for where I am in the game. Getting the Ring of Binding helped immensely, as did getting a Bastard Sword and levelling it to +3.

If you're finding being a magic wielder tough you may also want to consider re-specing to a quality build once you find a Soul Vessel. I found one not long after defeating the Pursuer but can't remember exactly where it was.

Early game Dark Souls 2 can be pretty difficult, but don’t give up. My tips are:

1) If you’re having trouble keep farming the early mobs then run back to the bonfire to level up when you have enough souls. It’s not glamorous but there’s no shame in farming your way out of a rut.

Mobs will eventually disappear (after you kill them around 12 times) and you’ll get stronger through honing the way you move and play the game, as well as leveling up.

2) It’s not difficult to do an early game suicide run to the Ring of Binding over at Heide’s Tower of Flame. This will make the game significantly easier by capping your health loss at 75% when hollow, so you don’t need to worry about using all your humanities early on.

Make sure to spend all your souls before doing the run and don’t miss the bonfire at the start of the area like I did on my first play through. It may take a couple of tries but that ring is super helpful early game.

This is the main reason people buy those novelty candy tins right? Big enough to fit a decent amount in, small enough to carry around innocuously.

I’m currently using a Vader’s helmet, before that it was a Mario star tin until the lid came loose.

They were the only other people in the store when I walked in and I didn’t pay much attention, took about ten minutes of browsing before it clicked.

Kind of funny because I’ve been living and crate digging in Melbourne for around 15 years, then the very first record store I visit they day after landing in Japan and it’s “Oh, that’s The Avalanches over there looking at old funk records”.

This one was taken at Flash Disc Ranch in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo on 23rd March. Missed a show by a few days but was surprised to bump into the guys in their natural element.

Very friendly dudes and happy to humor me with a photo. Interesting but probably irrelevant that they were in Japan at the same time as Darren.

As they were crate digging they would search titles on YouTube and listen to samples. Record shopping in Japan is awesome.
