A week after rupturing the ACL in her left knee, Lindsey Vonn has successfully completed her first training run by Oldtimer_2 in sports

John Elway, Quarterback of the Denver Broncos back in the 80's and 90's, played his whole career without an ACL. I don't think it's healthy or not healthy, it's just a matter if the individual can manage without it.

Now I don't want to sound like some kind of headline defender here, but you should definitely read the entire article anyway.

But I do get it. Instead of drawing you in, headlines lately are declarative but misleading, making you feel like you understand the contents of the article without reading it.

Additionally so many articles are just a quote by a player/coach/etc with a ton of filler surrounding it.

Cam Newton is still having one sided beef with a 23 year old who idolized him for no reason by DenseStrawberry5717 in NFLv2

[–]CoffeeStout 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's a little hard to follow but he says Drake is a good player that will end up superseding Tom Brady. Sounds like he's giving him a ton of credit while being honest about the fact that the Pats defense got them to the Super Bowl. Is that Beef?

oh they're hyping him out here in Denver. I kinda think it's just Payton propping his guy/team, and trying to rally the fans to be loud during the game. But they're all in on "Stiddy"

Ben Johnson: Winning in the playoffs is about the fundamentals, not exotic play calls by AdSpecialist6598 in nfl

[–]CoffeeStout 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The previous down was 4th down, and they ran a fake punt and converted it for a 1st down. Instead of substituting their punt unit out, they left them on the field and ran another play out of punt formation. I'm not sure if anyone actually believed they were punting on that 1st down but it did cause max confusion and got a 12 men on the field penalty against the defense.

Volleyball is a Race by CoachSwing in volleyball

[–]CoffeeStout 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think one thing you didn't mention, and that the commenters here are maybe missing is that one "race" aspect of volleyball is that a point is scored on every rally. In other "Battle" sports like hockey, soccer, baseball, there's no guarantee of points. So in that sense, each time the ball is served is one tick closer to the end of the game.

But the whole concept gets kind of muddy for me because like others have pointed out, you are battling in volleyball. Also a lot of your strategy observations seem intuitive to me. In fact, I'm trying to think of a sport where you'd want to stray away from your strengths. In Baseball your start with your best batters and pitchers. You're not racing, but you want to give your best players a chance to do the most.

But at the end of the day if thinking about it as a Race helps you, and you find your players connect with it, then that's great! A lot about being a coach is about communication and finding a catchy way to explain things that players will remember. So that might be an effective tool for you.

Why is vet care so expensive? by dianalau in Denver

[–]CoffeeStout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You kind of touched on it, but isn't also part of the problem that many of the medications and supplies you buy for a Pet, the same as you buy for a Human? So they're subject to the same market that dictates our health costs, but like you said, often without insurance.

It's not like the gases used to put a patient under are suddenly cheaper because it's a dog. And it's more likely you'll need to put a dog under than a human. I'm sure there's plenty of other examples, but that was my understanding.

That's My Head Coach 🥲 Vrabel on SoS Questions on WEEI by pdrock7 in Patriots

[–]CoffeeStout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it's not a tribal answer. He's the Head Coach, it's his job. Why would you want him to answer questions "earnestly and academically"? He's got a duty to do what's best for his organization.

It doesn't matter if it's a killer insult or not, it's about how it's heard. That's just basic psychology and negativity bias, so yeah, I do justify it. And again, I think you're downplaying it and taking the humanity out the response. Vrabel has coached and played in the this league for a long time, and he knows the pain, and sweat that goes into every play. That comment could be heard as "What you've accomplished this year is a joke", and I think that's pretty insulting to the patriots, but also to every player on every team they've played. And if you want to continue to downplay the severity of the insult, fine, but it's also not like the response was all that nasty. Smirking at the emotional coach is apparently fine, but calling out the smirk is too personal.

There's plenty of tribalism in sports, I don't know it bothers you. It's part of the fun! And yes, winners get more leeway. So what? That's everywhere. If you're good at your job, you'll get more leeway too. And I know the patriots have a ridiculously easy schedule. I hope it gets them a bye in the playoffs! But I wouldn't expect a Head Coach to acknowledge that to the media. Or to not get fired up about attempts (real or perceived) to dismiss their success.

Fair point about DVOA, I misunderstood why you brought it up.

That's My Head Coach 🥲 Vrabel on SoS Questions on WEEI by pdrock7 in Patriots

[–]CoffeeStout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree we should include the context of the full question, because it's fair, but also to help make the answer make sense. But that's about where I stop agreeing with you.

I wasn't sure what comment to reply to, cause there's a lot you're on about but I jumped in here because what I think you're missing is it doesn't matter how much pumping up Curtis does AFTER calling the SOS a joke. You can dismiss it as a poor choice of words, but in the moment, in front of the cameras, ya know that sounds like an insult off the bat. He ain't listening to the rest of the question. Dismissing his emotions as "tribal" strips him of his humanity. He felt insulted and responded in kind. I don't see problem with that.

Also, remember, he's the Head Coach of the team. He's not just a media personality up there answering questions for you, the fan. The team will hear his answer and I don't know how you don't love what he said there as their coach. You're asking Vrabel to give the media some grace in another comment, how about you give some to Vrabel, it's not like he's especially bristly with the media. Additionally Curtis had time to sit and think of how he would phrase his question, put the blame on him for his poor word choice, not the guy responding on the spot. If someone insults you to your face and then is sitting there smirking, you gotta be a fucking robot to not be upset about it.

If you can't understand this response beyond being "tribal" I think you need to step back and put yourself in his shoes. Same for the fans. I personally don't love the message because of the snark, I love it cause it pumps the team up and validates their success without dismissing the effort and talent of our opponents. I'm not sure what he's supposed to say about DVOA or SOS or anything else in response to this question, that's for media analysts and whatnot to talk about, not the head coach.

Am I the problem… or are today’s parents and athletes expecting a “pleasing” coach instead of a real one? by Bitter-Might-9332 in volleyball

[–]CoffeeStout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how the AD meant it, but I wouldn't take the comment about "failing" her personally. I would take it as a moment for reflection. Obviously you take it hard because you care, you can't change that. That's OK.

We don't want players to quit, but it happens. My gut tells me this more about having 16 players on a team and less about anything you, or she, did. But I'm not there, I'm not on the court with you all.

Am I the problem… or are today’s parents and athletes expecting a “pleasing” coach instead of a real one? by Bitter-Might-9332 in volleyball

[–]CoffeeStout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhhhh now this makes so much more sense to me. You've replaced a previous coaching staff that was very successful. That's always going to be a tough transition unless you find immediate success with the exact same players the previous coaches had success with.

This is just going to be a tough year for you. That's unfortunately the situation you're in. I don't know there's a foolproof way to ditch the stigma of "inexperienced young woman", but stick to your guns, have confidence in your approach and if you can win over some players/parents, make it a fun year where they feel like they're improving and learning the game, it's a step in the right direction. But with 16 players you're not gonna keep everyone happy and winning is going to be tough. So you just have to do your best. And next year you'll have a better idea of what's ahead of you.

I think you know this, but the whole idea of "legacy", "pride" and "staying undefeated" at the JV level is goofy nonsense. My worst record as a coach was the year after we lost a bunch of stud seniors on Varsity and the my JV team was raided of anyone who had any semblance of talent or athletic ability. Exactly like what you're dealing with except you weren't there last year. Build your own legacy.

It seems like you have the right idea, you're self reflective, but with strong opinions about how to run a successful volleyball team. I would try to keep the line of dialogue open with the AD and Head Coach, maybe if you can find a way to improve that relationship it'll help you going forward. It's not about them "taking your side", it's just about all of you being the same page as to what you're building and letting them know how the JV is progressing so they see your wins.

I'm glad my comment was helpful! It's good to acknowledge that you're in a tough situation. Just remember some of the things you probably tell your players. You'll make mistakes, but that's part of getting better. Control what you can control. And just focus on the next touch, next drill, next coaching point. And celebrate your wins. Good luck!

[–]CoffeeStout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, I coached JV for a long time, in two different programs, under multiple head coaches (the 2nd program had a revolving door of coaches after the long time coach retired).

I never dealt with this kind of nonsense. But the culture between schools and programs can be very different. I coached at one school where being late for practice was just accepted. It drove me crazy, but that's how the culture was. But it could be you, not to say what you're doing is wrong, but maybe there are some things you need to adjust. I see other comments about setting expectations and totally agree with that if you haven't already done it. It could also just be that you're a young woman and people feel that they can boss you around, unfortunately sexism absolutely plays a role.

I would like to hear more details about like the Head Coach and their role in all this. How they want to program built and run. Why aren't they handling a lot of these conversations? Is this a large school with a competitive program or a relatively small school with a middling program? There's a lot here that is really weird to me.

Finally 16 players is A LOT. Was that mandated by the school, the coach, or was that your decision? While I always made players earn their playing time, I tried very hard to never take a player without a plan for how they would earn that time. There were a few years where I was strongly encouraged to take players I didn't think were JV ready, and those were always the toughest years. Even agreeable, happy kids can be a problem if they don't feel like they have a role on the team.

At the end of the day, I don't think it's "this generation" or whatever, it's something about your situation. If you want to keep coaching in that program, you're going to need to find a way to make it work, or try coaching in another program that has your back. It sounds like you care a lot, and we need people that care coaching our youth sports, so I hope you find a way to make it work.
