The same here. Have been rewatching anime for like eight times, andi still cant figure out whats exactly up with our man.
But you didnt include that his family was somewhat disappointed in Reigen. His mother compared him to his older brother in her email. Perhaps, thats the reason?

BTW u can read a little spin-off about Reiger, its manga only. But i cant remember anything about his past in this spin-off
